Need Cam Help 408 Street / Strip

Need Cam Help 408 Street / Strip - 02/01/14 05:46 PM

I’m building a small block 408 and need help picking out a cam that is good for a street / strip Cuda on pump gas or E-85 if required. I’m a little concerned about the compression and know the cam selection is critical. Below are the details of the build:

1974 360 block, .030 over, cylinders race honed with plates, sonic tested, deck trued, line honed.

.030 Diamond pistons part #51026.

Eagle H-beam rods

Eagle Forged 4.00" crankshaft.

Edelbrock #60775 63cc aluminum cylinder heads.

Compression should be between 10.5 and 11 with the 63cc heads (Could I reduce this with Cometic head gaskets?)

Stall is 2600 - 2800 and 3.91 rear

Also looking for a good shop to port the heads that can turn them around in a few months.

Thanks for the help

Jim

looks like a nice build, but I would definitely rethink what you have planned on the torque convertor front.

I had a similar build to yours, just a hair more compression( 11.5 ish) Saw a lot of street use, and more than one 70 mile round trip jaunt to the track.
Used an 8 inch convertor that flashed about 4800 with a comp flat tappet cam..107 lsa, installed at 104 260/266@50, 598/623 with 1.6 rockers. Dwayne Porter specc'ed the cam, was a comp. 10.70's at 3400 pounds, with exhaust, fun general purpose build. Eddies, tti 1 5/8 to 1 3/4 step headers, weiand excellerator, 1025 race demon 4150 style carb, 416 cubes. Ross pistons and eagle rods,727, 4.10 gears.

Great advice guys, the converter is currently in the car. Can defiantly change it out during the engine swap. was your car a little too much on the street? my car will see 90% street action, so i don't want to get crazy with the cam, converter and rear gear.

Probably 70/30 strip street. Even a 4.10 type gear at 60 mph ish with a 28 inch tire runs 3000-3200 or so, paying attention with convertor choice. That isn't gonna hurt anything. The cam I ran used ultra mild spring pressures, could put thousands of miles on such a setup.
Even an 8 inch convertor with good tranny pan and. cooler should live just fine.
You have a lot of nice parts there and wanting heads ported. Why saddle the combo to run 12's when it can runs 10's 90% as reliably.

Talk to Brett Miller for the heads. He goes by W5DART66. That's where all my heads go now, he's a straight shooter and won't give you bogus info.

When porting those heads, the chambers get ported and will be larger so don't worry about compression.
If your wanting hyd. roller we normally use something like 236-242@ .050 and about .580-.600 lift.
This is a real nice street grind that makes great TQ and HP with a good idle (slightly rough).

Curtis Boggs did my Edelbrocks and they work well. Call Hughes Engines for a cam.

Another for "Dwayne Porter" as he worked my heads and speced out my cam which works real good. Ron

Thanks for all the good info! I talked to bob at MCH and he will be CNC porting the heads. i'm going to take your advice on the cam and go with a hyd roller and a converter change. I will give you guys an update after we dyno the motor...

My 410 stroker has a comp XR286R cam in it and Edelbrock heads ported by Ryan Johnson at Shadydell Speed Shop. My car is street/strip, 3200#'s, pump gas, 10.8:1 compression, 8" converter, and runs 6.70's in the 1/8 (mid 10's in the 1/4). Current times in sig below.

I like this cam because it is easy on parts and makes good power.
