505 Stroker Indy EZ-1 which cam and valvespring - 01/24/14 08:59 PM

So I picked up an already built 505 off here. Its a 440 block, Eagle stroker kit, has Indy EZ-1 Max Wedge port heads with I am told are as they come from Indy springs wise, and for a cam it has the old Mopar .590 in it 4 degrees retarded.

Its going in a 67 Fury Police Pursuit car I picked up last year (the block is actually a 67 within a few days of the cars build date) and I want to have a hassle free large amount of street miles drivable car as well as occasional strip use. I have much faster cars for strip use already, this is my "cruiser" lol so I am willing to leave a fair amount of peak power (but not too much) on the table in exchange for a fairly decent idle, fairly low maintenance rocker adjustment and valvespring life wise, enough vacuum for my power brakes, etc. I recently went with a street/strip converter in the thing like a 2500-3000 or so stall, a mildly built 727 from Keith Long, and I went with the factory original 3:23 gears and a nice sure grip setup from Dr. Diff. so I do not want to change any of that.

So what I was thinking was I went out and got the dual plane indy manifold already and will open that up to the MW ports, and I was going to go with an 850 or 950 4150 carb. I was looking at going with a much more streetable and lower maintenance cam either a hydraulic or hydraulic roller with around 250 duration at 50 like the XE295HL Comp Cams hydraulic (251/257 duration at 50, .564 lift) since everything I am seeing points to the .590 Mopar being too much duration for me, much bigger stall requirements, and frequent lash adjustment. As far as the springs I have no idea - all I seem to find is that the heads have springs "good for .600 lift" in em. Would these be decent for a hydraulic or hydraulic roller in the mid-high 500 lift range? Anyone know what specific springs these heads come with?

Looking for input basically what do you guys think or recommend?

Also, I was going to go with the TTI 1-3/4 primary C body headers and 3" exhaust. Compression works out to around 11.5 to 1.

A small street roller cam is probably what you want. Take a look at the cam specs for the Chevy 502 engine and you'll be surprised at how small it is. That is a super popular engine for the street rod crowd and it is tiny compared to the cams that people on here tend to recommend.

The MP .590 is way too big for a street driven Fury with high rear end gears. The MP .528 would be very smooth and have a lot of power in that 505.

Those EZ-1 heads come with Comp 911 springs. You can look at Comp's website to see the spec on them.

Hrmm those are a single spring with damper. What Ive got by eye is a double spring with damper...

With the new hydraulic rollers they can just be used as is right? No need to bush lifter bores or any of that like a solid roller? No super high spring rates?

Like I said Im leaning towards a regular ole hydraulic do to friendly spring rates, cost, ease of maintenance, etc. If the hydraulic rollers are better and still streetable springs and no need for machine work I would be in...

Keep the recommendations coming!

I bought my EZ heads direct from Indy at a car show and my heads have comp 928 dual springs with damper rated to .650 lift.

I had a shop look the heads over and they tested the springs at 160 pounds seated (1.925" installed height) 335 pounds 500 lift and 380 pounds 620 lift and coil bind at 1.150 (775 lift).

If you're going to go with a hyd roller cam then you should ditch the Indy springs and install some beehives.

I have a set of new Comp hyd roller lifters that I'll make you a deal on. Shoot me a PM if you're interested. I probably have some other parts to make that combo work for you. I've been using EZ heads for a long time.

If you diside to use any roller cam chose lifter´s whit care and there are some great topics on it in this forum so nobody try to sell you any bad once some that makes cams try to sell crappy lifters

If you go hydraulic roller, the valve springs will need to match the cam pretty close. If you have the $$$ the behive springs are good, but make sure they can handle your valve lift. Higher ratio rocker arms may increase lift beyond the "recommend" valve spring.

On my 505" stroker with the Comp XR286 cam, I used ISKY 8005A valve springs with Comp 748-16 retainers, and it seems to be running good with that spring (RPM Limiter set to 6,000 RPM.)

Are you leaving it at that compression? E85 or regular pump gas?
