Megasquirt and Ford EDIS 8?

Megasquirt and Ford EDIS 8? - 01/20/14 07:04 AM

I know this probably is foreign to most but I thought I'd give it a try on here lol. I just bought a Megasquirt 1 v2.2 with extra code that allows me to run the ignition too. This was previously set up for EDIS and rather than changing it over to use my MSD I figure it would be worth looking at going with the DIS ignition. I know Feets on here used to run DIS maybe he will chime in. Just kinda wanted some thoughts and see if anyone had gone this route and maybe what you did with the distributor....

with the extra code you can take a stock distributor and lock out the advance or take a lean distributor and your megasquirt will run the ignition curve for you. why go thru all the extra work to convert to the edis and still have to figure something to go where your dist was?

I just cut the top of the distributor off on mine and welded the hole shut. Then cut the dist shaft so it would keep the oil pump drive in the block - its not the prettiest solution but it works for me. I think another solution would be to buy one of AndyF's distributor plugs and do something to keep the oil pump drive in the right spot.

Go with the DIS your engine will be much happier, and the edis setup cost is low. You will have a superior ignition system with much better control.

That's what I had in mind but I never bothered to do anything with it.
I can't tell you how many miles I logged running a distributor without a cap and rotor.

Will the stock EDIS coils be better than my MSD? Just don't want it to blow out under boost

I'm using extra code with hei7 module.. And my stock distributor locked.. Works fine...

Tinking on going to coil on plug when upgrade to MS3 for progressive n2o control.. But not aware of big bennefits on running.this 8 coil setup... Maybe much more acurate timing...

A proper 8 coil system will have time to fully saturate each coil between firings. One coil doing 8 cylinders has much less time.

one thing that is good is the EDIS module doesn't really care about the coil, I've run the stock coils, Neon SRT4 coils and I'm currently running some coils from diyautotune and they all work well. I am not running boost "yet", so I can't comment on that but I would check the turboforums.com site to see what the ford guys use in boosted applications. The individual coils with the MS3X allows individual cylinder ignition timing.
