What's a fair price to grind a crank these days? - 01/18/14 03:47 AM

I need to get some machining done for some of my engines soon and getting estimates. One place says they'll grind rods and mains to size for $100, another wants $200.

The $200 job is clean it, grind rods and mains to size with proper radius, chamfer oil holes, and polish.

I didn't get details from the guy that charges $100.

My feeling is the $200 quote is from a higher quality shop but I dont' know what's the going rate these days.

This would be for a stock forged 440 crank.

The latter shop also wants $45 to magnuflux the crank to check for cracks.

I paid $175 1 1/2 years ago to cut it to chevy rods
and just size the mains(they were a bit large for
what I wanted)
EDIT
that was all polished and ready to drop in(with radius)

That doesn't sound too much different than what I was quoted. I also asked about the cost to offset grind the rod journals to increase the stroke and that raised the price to $300.

The more material they need to cut off increases the
price tag(thats more passes on the machine).. I paid
$420 to have the rods cut .020 BUT I had that one
nitrited.. also different areas of the country charge
different prices based on labor cost

I paid around $350 to offset grind from 4.150 / 2.375 to 4.250 / 2.200 and turn the counter weights down to 7 1/4 IIRC. They were both polished, chamfered ready to run.

Thats a good price... I paid $400 for just turning
down the weights from a known shop on here.. I believe
I got ripped off on that one... but I dont deal with
that shop any longer

Yep... thats why I dont deal with them any longer
and I dont suggest them to anyone any longer

You arent buying a Callies crank for ANYWHERE near
$400... I had $2000 into that crank... I sold it and
took a pretty big hit on it... that was BB stuff

The guy at the shop did make the comment that after $300 in the crank for the off-set grinding plus almost $50 for magnuflux to check for cracks, etc. that I might just want to consider a new crank for a few bucks more.

So sounds like he's probably an honest guy. I don't know what kind of new crank $500 will buy but I suppose it's going to be at least as good as a rebuilt 40 year old one.
