lets talk about sliders versus shackles - 12/21/08 11:21 PM

I am currently changing springs on the rear of my car and was considering going to sliders instead of the old shackles. Are they really that much better?

I put them on mine when I moved the springs into the frame rails. It allows it to sit 1/2 to 3/4" lower in the rear which is what I wanted. Only difference I noticed is on the street they pop at times when I turn sharp but I have a Dana with a spool. If you install them make sure to have the slide bolt set 3/4 of the way to the rear with the weight of the car on them or they will bottom out during the launch as the spring arches.

Yeah thats the project I am doing(moving the springs in) and I had to do something with the rear half.I was concerned about the amount of travel because I still drive my car to the track.I was looking at the ones Mancini sells where did you get yours?

I'm not sure how long the slot is in these sliders are, but if they ever bottom out the slot during chassis rise, the spring becomes solid and will unload the rear tire, much like having rear shocks that are to short

This is true but this is also where good shocks come
in to play. The reason I dont care for sliders is
that if they get dirt and crap into them they can
and will bind up throwing the chassis off

Thats the one point that has me questioning my decision.I am also looking at the Afco single adjustable shocks with with the new high velocity rebound valving.

I have them in my car

Put them in this year

Didn't notice any difference other then lowering the car in the rear

I got mine from summit. They are Afco's. I have monoleaf cal trac springs,cal-trac bars, single adjustable rancho shocks. Best 60 ft 1.47 on drag radials @ 3850 lbs.

The slot is around 4 inches, maybe longer, I think. Mine have never bottomed out on compression or rise.

Shackles work great I see these sliders as a gimmick, something different, save your money. BTW what suspension are you running?

Sliders may help in some combos, and are high techno looking. But shackles really work just fine, IMO and are also better in some/Most combos. But there are the exceptions!

Whats your combo needing IYO, mike

Re: lets talk about sliders versus shackles - 12/24/08 08:51 PM

My current setup is 456-457 SS springs,Procomp truck shocks and snubber.I had Cal-Tracs and Monoleafs but they went flat just like the 3400 springs did.I really liked the way the Cal-Tracs hooked and launched but for a street strip car they were not the solution.I now have a pair of 454-455 3800# springs to install and I was going to install them with "good" Afco adjustable shocks and move them inboard to the framerails. This is the reason for the sliders instead of installing upper spring mounts in the frame.

I believe AFCO makes them :

Take a look at speedway motors. There's both a standard and a heavy duty part :

I used the afco sliders for two years
average 60ft 1.52 I liked them because it lowered
the car with the ss springs.wasnt very happy with the cars being consistant, made my own 4 link with ladderbar brackets and coilovers 1.46 60ft
with no other changes

The sliders were designed for circle track cars so I really dont see how they are a gimmick

The vid below is from norwalk and this guy swears by them, as do the guys from AFCO.

Well I think I will buy a pair of the HD units from Speedway and build my own brackets with 2 extra inches of travel in the slots.Too bad I will have to wait sooo long to see if they work. Its going to be one of those years where everything is different except the transmission and rear end.
