midplate thoughts - 12/19/13 07:39 PM

Hi everyone. Just started a tube frame chassis and looking for opinions on mounting a midplate. I was thinking about using a full plate, like an altered and supporting it off of the dash bar and lower frame rails with uprights between the rails and dash bar, using the midplate as part of the firewall. Can it be bolted in,planing on a steel midplate 25.4 cert? Any pictures ? Thanks Al MERRY CHRISTMAS HAPPY NEW YEAR

This is the way a car SHOULD be built. The midplate area is an integral structural part of the car to make one stiff. As for mounting, I usually frame my opening from tubing as you describe and then weld straps of narrow plate inside the opening. The 1/4" alum midplate then bolts to those straps all around the opening with 1/4-20 bolts and the plate sits flush with the outside edge of the tubing. Basically the midplate becomes a "bolt in" firewall for that section of chassis.

Midplate is good. Mine attaches at 10 points.

If I were redoing my car that is exactly what I would do.

My mid plate attaches at 6 points but its just a single
rail car.. actually both my cars are the same single
rails with 6 points but I also dont use the mid plate
as part of the fire wall... the tunnel comes up to
the verticals and thats where the fire wall starts..
I have small cars so I keep the tunnel pretty tight
to the trans for room inside
