trailer roof

its time to paint the roof on my race trailer.it its a 1996 haulmark.all around the edges is some kind of silver tape,i dont know if it was added by the previous owner or not.once i get it all scrapped off should i just retape it or is there a ruberized type product i can roll on to seal the edges?

I have used some of the silver tape on my old motor home, its about 3 yrs old and is holding up great. I have both white and silver tape. The silver I bought at a home improvement store and the white came from a RV store. The silver is much cheaper.

I would just rubber coat it & never look back. I put on 2 coats. No issue's.

I used silicone/rtv and a brush... I bought the tubes
and put it on then brushed it out

I owned two 1996 Haulmark trailers. One was a 24ft tag then I traded for a 32ft goose. The one thing I liked about them was the continuous sheet aluminum roof. I can't imagine anyone wanting to paint that roof.

This said I can't speak for your trailer which could have some other sheeting on the roof.

If it was painted before and flaking or something I guess you have to consider that also,

a white water base coating is the only real way to do it.. there are many types and brand out there. you want something with a heavy solid .. you can get this one from LOWES/HOMEDEPOT for around 100$.. apply as stated on the bucket......... http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...4sg-nR462tXGRSA

Paint something unique on the roof in the event the trailer is ever stolen. Makes it much easier to identify from the air.

the main reason for painting the roof is that it is starting to get some basket ball size spots of surface rust and the tape is starting to break down.plus i would like it to be white,its DARK blue,here in Fla. every little bit of cooling helps.

just go to home depot and get the white roof sealer stuff it comes in gallon cans. thats what I use.

I can't think of anything on the roof of my 97 Haulmark Elite II that would rust? Like Leon's, mine has a single sheet roof and no tape at the seams, just a generous coating of seam sealer. I will say one thing, the roof on the Haulmark is a whole lot sturdier than our 28ft Cargo Mate.

My old Haulmark was a 1 piece alum also.. same as
my current trailer... I use the silicone as I said

If you decide to coat/paint/seal the roof, remember that preparation is the key!

Get every square inch that is going to lift or flake clean. Kill any rust. get any remaining solid old coat roughed up so the new stuff will stick.

If you just pour on a new coat over the old stuff without prep, the base will still lift and flake.

They build them both ways, one piece aluminum, or seamed steel, yours for sure is steel, nothing wrong with that, lot of them around,but yep needs cleaning and coating. About 1k differnece in price when new.

I think the black streaks you see, would be prevented, with a coating on the raw aluminum. I know my 4926 lets the roof water run down the sides, and that starts the black streaks. I'm coating mine next spring. Also, the cleaners that will remove the black streaks, also remove the oem coating, and you better seal or it becomes even more work.

My 28 foot pace arrow has a 1 piece aluminum roof. I went to the local RV store and got a quart of brush on rubber type coating to seal up the front cap and along the edges. As said above, proper prep. will make your repair last for years.

^^^^^^ This, except after sanding I would coat it with a couple of coats of OSPHO and then apply a white rubber roof coating

Rickster, what is OSPHO,

Never heard of it.

Edit: Its a rust killer. But it is controversial on the clean up before paint.
