Bottom Bulb Racers, come on in, if you will

Bottom Bulb Racers, come on in, if you will - 12/06/13 12:21 AM

Looking for some ideas on a 'blinder' for blocking out the tree except
for the last yellow. If anybody would like to give any secrets away, with pics or sugestions as to how an old guy could get a little better reaction time, it would be appreciated. I have some ideas, but would like some others' feed back as to what they have done and how it worked out for them. Thanks.

The most common blinder folks use is the sunvisor, with or without something attached to it. Launch flip it up out of view.

Second most common I'd say is tape on the visor of your helmet. Same deal, Launch and flip the visor up out of view.

Third is some something attached to the roll cage halo, again it needs to be loose enough to flip up while down track.

NHRA prohibits attaching anything to the windshield, so you've got to find somewhere else creative to mount it. You'll also find you might struggle at night because you will be able to see the other bulbs light. You can use constant back lighting behind your visor to help lessen this but i've heard it's not perfect.

I personally don't blind but I know many successful racers who do. Good luck.

Try using one of your hands to block it ( the top two bulbs) out for several laps, if you like that then build one you can use

It won't make your reaction time quicker, maybe more consistent.
I didn't like it at night as you can tell when the upper lights are coming down. You don't see the upper lights during the day. I guarantee that will change your R/T. Pick a spot on the tree and stick to it. Practice,Practice,Practice. There are plenty of deadly "old" bottom bulbs racers.

I'm going to try a blocker for next year also. I don't race much anymore so my consistency at the tree is horrible now days.
I'll post some pic's after it's finished.

I started using a blinder last year because I always had to wait on the 3rd yellow or I'd be red. It will slow your reaction down but make it more consistent. If you race NHRA the max size a blinder can be is 8"x4" so it won't work for both lanes unless you have a slider. If you night race much you will have a hard time with a blinder because you will see the other two bulbs no matter what. I've been pretty successful with it but every once in a while the blinder bites me in the @ss. Some people can do it, others not so much. Hope this helps!
