8 sec tire recomendations?

8 sec tire recomendations? - 11/20/13 01:45 PM

I've got some limitations; here they are.
17.7 absolute max section width. They rub a touch with the 2079 GoodYears I have on there now. 33.6 circ, 106 rollout 15.1 wide, 14 inch rim, semi stiff construction.
Race weight 3,000 lbs. I run a 4.56 gear, trans brake, 2.45 low Torqueflite, loose converter with about 8 percent slip? Mph is 153 ,looking for maybe 155 possible down the road. Max desired rpm, 7500.
What I am looking for is a possibly better tire for overall performance. There is a Hoosier 13.5W x 15 stiff sidewall slick, claims 17.7 section width, but that is about all I see with a decent foot print, narrow enough section width and at least 102 inch rollout. The Hoosier is 5 lbs lighter per tire, and stiff wall construction. Opinions on whether the stiff wall is better are appreciated.
Anybody have other tire suggestions, or experience with the Hoosiers? How do the section widths compare? Any extra section width and I would probably be reselling them, so I need input.

hi,
you would be supprised how much tire you dont need, had goodyear 1984 32x14 on a 12" rim 2" on outside was not wearing at all so it was like a 10" tire went 8.87 all day 2500 lbs, stiff sidewall was for protree?? better reaction times?? i dont think there is a performance differance??

I have been very happy with my M/T 33x15's, part number is 30791. My car weighs in at 2940ish and they are work very well. They are a stiff sidewall design. Section width is likely a bit wide for you but possible stepping down to a 14-32 would be better.

Al are you running them tubeless?
On the 1984s, I'll check them out too.

Greg yes I run them tubeless. They do leak a little as there is no soap on them, it was making the wheels look funky inside. I have had excellent luck with them.

Love my M/T 16-32-15's on my Daytona but I don't know if you have the room.

greg, this is like asking on picking a cam for some one. I always ran d2078 goodyears with great results. I decided to try some of the m/t's that were std. side wall. with out any shock adj. I ran one event and sold them. just didn't like the hit off the line and 60's were off. I put a new set goodyears back on, and right back to being spot on. I run 8.40's without muffs and 8.50's on muffs. 159 t 162 mph. 4.56 gear with glide. 7400 thru the traps.

Deeppockets, when you say standard sidewall, that may have been the difference? The M/Ts I would try would be the stiff 14x32 tires Al talked about.

greg, yes the m/t was not a stiff sidewall, and the goodyear is. with the m/t's it did'nt even feel like the front end was lifting, but after looking at some photo's it was. the sidewalls were takeing some of the hit.for me the goodyears hit like a ton of bricks. i'll never try another brand of tire. it's perfect for my set up.

I ran Goodyears forever. The issue I had with them is two fold. The major reason was when they went away they went all at once. As in the car worked fine one pass and were goen the next. In this super class stuff we cannot have our 60's vary at all. With the 15x33 GY's I was running they gave no sign of going away they just went.

Secondly and when I made the permamnent switch to M/T was at Phoenix a few years back. It was after that track was having issues with cars wrecking at a division race. I was asking around and watchign what was going on. The cars that were making it down the track in the super classes all had one thing in common for the most part, and M/T tire. So I went over and talked to them and made the switch. The Goodyears I had on the car only had 17 passes on them. I switched to the M/T and viola the issue was fixed and I got down jst fine. I did drop a little in 60', but it was due to the increased rollout of the tire. Ultimately I was able to run quicker ET's as well all out.

I had the exact same experience with the G/Y as Al. They work great than all of a sudden they would be done. I tried the M/T's for a season. They seemed to work well except at the local track. Track prep varied from really bad to poor. A buddy was using Hoosiers and he was able to hook much better then I could. So I put a set of those on and they seem to work pretty well. Time for another set so I'm debating which flavor this time. BTW, I run a 33x16 with a soft compound.

Thanks guys. Those M/T stiff wall 32x14 look like they are worth trying. I posted on DRR and got similar responses, most in favor of the M/T
