Re: SB Oiling - 11/15/13 07:04 PM

If I did forget that, would I get any oil pressure or absolutely nothing??

spinning the motor with the starter, no spark plugs, filter won't pump up nor anything on the gauge.

Re: SB Oiling - 11/15/13 07:11 PM

Not absolutly certain on that, just know it needs to be in there to make it flow properly, been too many years since I had mine apart,,,,are you using a remote filter or is it on the side of the block like stock? reason I ask is I run a remote and I got the lines switched once and it wouldn't build pressure because it was going thru the filter backwards and the bypass was opening/ closing off and hampering flow.

Possibility you will get none spinning it with the starter. Pull the dist. and spin the pump with a priming shaft. You should get "some" pressure, even if you left out the plug. It will be low though.

I agree, try it with a primer rod first.

or

Pull the intake off and check to see if the plug in the back of the lifter galley is there?

And people wonder why they wipe out cams and bearings. NEVER prime a new engine by cranking it over with the starter.

NEVER, NEVER use the starter to prime the oil pump, NEVER OP, there are two oil plugs on the dirver side of the block, the one in the rear of the block behind the distributor hole is bigger so you can use that hole to slip a allen wrench into the back of the lifter bore oil galery and remove and install that oil galley plug that plugs that oil galley I'll bet that left side oil galley plug inside the block is missing A quick easy way to check that is to remove the intake manifold and prime the motor and see if oil shoots out of that galley plug hole, if so you can, with pateince, install that plug back into that hole 1/8 turn at a time

easy mistake to make. Your machinist should be up to speed on those 2 areas and ether tell you or do it for you if you are doing the assembly work. One thing I always do if I am having any machine work done is to have my machinist clean the block to "assembly level". Then I reclean it before I start assembly work. I always get out more dirt, especially on the cylinder walls. I have to go through them 3-4 times before I can get a paper towel to come out clean / white.

The primer rod on my drill spun it around and I had oil pressure in no time.

Hard to believe that the motor wouldn't prime itself by spinning it w/o spark plugs in it

The block was ok, none left out

Re: SB Oiling - 11/18/13 09:53 PM

Glad you figured it out.

Just for information the diverter plug does just that. It diverts oil to the oil filter. Then that oil comes back in above the plug. YOU SHOULD NOT LOOSE OIL PRESSURE BECAUSE THE DIVERTER PLUG WAS LEFT OUT. Any time you have a new block from Mopar that plug is out. I scratched my head quite a bit when building my first R3 as when I blowed air in the main cap it was hitting me in the face from the pressure port.
