Many moons ago I had Scott at Straightline custom grind a solid roller cam for me. I was building a small cubic inch (.030" over stock stroke 318) nitrous motor with EFI and Edelbrock heads. Over the years I have sold off or traded pretty much all the parts for that build and all I have left is the cam, some Crower lifters, and have aquired a stock bore '69 340 block. I am thinking of building a 416 with some W5 or Indy 245cc heads. I would love to turbocharge it, but am unsure if these cam specs are suitable for that. Engine will be going in a 67 D100 pickup with a TKO 600 5 speed transmission and will have EFI. Discuss or tell me what you would build around this cam. Here is the cam card.

NEVR, EVER start a build based on one part

Start the build with a goal in mind and then buy the parts you need to accomplish that goal

I would build your motor the way you want it and then have that cam reground for the motor

BTW, I have done what I said to not do and regretted it both times

I am just hoping to see what people think this cam is capable of or best suited to. I think it's kind of an oddball cam. Any constructive criticism?

But that is the essence of hot rodding. Build a motor around a cam, build a car around a front clip or body shell. Not the right way for sure, but some lucky few do pull it off

Looks like a nice street cam. I would think a nice 10.5 to one short block 340-360 Cu In with some OTB eddy heads would like that.

360-415" 10-11 to 1. I think W5 or Indy 245 will be overkill, may be more suited to an Edelbrock or Indy T/A head. It appears oddball but the specs really arent that far off from a couple Comp grinds.

I would talk to Scott. But, I feel pretty sure a cam ground for a 318 is not going to work well with .690" of extra stroke. The way the engine fills the cylinder is going to be much different and need a different camshaft.

The only saving grace might be forced induction. Short on duration , but healthy lift.......decent lobe seperation.
Not optimum , but not horrible.
I know there are better grinds , but I think this one is in the ball park for a force fed motor.
I do agree that you pick the cam for the combo.
Worst case , you have a nice core for a regrind.

I would put the cam in the for sale section, give yourself a clean sheet of paper, and start your build with no limiting factors like this particular cam would be.
Scott, btw, doesn't grind cams, just calls up and has ground what he thinks might work, given a customers specs and intended usage. He just sells parts and services, kind of a middle man, unless something has changed I am not aware of.
I tried him once, but had WAY better luck with Dwayne Porter.

Thanks guys, keep the input coming. I started this thread to ask about the cam, not the grinder. Let's keep it that way. How about I change my question?? If you built an engine that ended up using a cam with these specs, what would that engine be?

Probably be usable in a 340, mild compression, using a head with good mid lift flow. But wouldn't be a good choice on a 4 inch motor.
Regards cam grinder, just correcting a mistake you made in your OP, you probably just worded it wrong, no biggie, bro
