Wild Horse Pass Drag Strip

Wild Horse Pass Drag Strip - 10/07/13 09:00 PM

Those of you that live in the valley missed a great opportunity to make as many passes as you wanted this past weekend. The arm drop event went really well. There were 102 cars on Saturday and 189 on Sunday. Ninety percent were street cars, but there were race cars as well, including a fuel altered and some turbo cars.

The track does not have any equipment to prep the track yet. They hired the guy that preps the track in Albuquerque. He came over with all his equipment loaded on a long trailer. He did an excellent job. It was great to get to use PJ 1 again. There was plenty of traction. I could feel my shoes getting stuck to the track when I was working at the starting line. I made three passes in my Aspen and it pulled the wheels higher than before. It was a great feeling.

The first race is scheduled for the weekend of 12/14. I hope some of you guys come out. The track is hosting the first race of the 2014 season for the Heritage Series. It will be Jan 10 to the 12th.

Hope to see you soon,

Raul

We showed up on Sunday Raul. No roll bar, no race. Mary was bummed. We watched you for a little while. Wished you were flagging them off instead of the arm drop. I'd probably be the only one there that could relate to it though.

Sorry I missed it. I had every intention of going - but then ended up having to work all day saturday and sunday. I won't find out how it does for real now until I tow the thing all the way to Sacramento for a truck-only race on the 20th. I have my fingers crossed. I REALLY wanted to at least give a test squirt or two.

What...??!! How is this possible. Everyone knows what the roll bar cut off is, RIGHT?????

So if it DOES run quicker than 11.50's, why didn't you just slow it down???

I don't think they will let a convertible run without a rollbar and helmet at any speed.

That was their answer. Helmet wasn't a problem. Also want arm restraints. I explained to them that it was a low 15 second car at best. Didn't matter.

Sorry she did not get a chance to race. I hope you had a good ride down and back up the hill. I would have used flags, but they said it was arm drop.

I head an ugly rumor that the track may yet again be in trouble and have a merky future. Apparently they are not happy about a lot of things. My suggestion is get out and support the facility as much as possible.

It's been packed at every event since they re-opened... um well, except for NHRA which isn't the track's fault.

I have only been there once, when it was Firebird. It was great then, compared to my home track (Pacific Raceways), and I am sure it is improved since then. The big issue, I believe, is the cost to the track to put on a NHRA national event. I don't see how it can pencil out and if the track operators look at their balance sheet they soon realize they can clear more profit by running brackets and exhibition deals week in and week out rather than betting the farm on a once a year weekend with the big rollers

Re: Wild Horse Pass Drag Strip - 04/23/14 08:58 PM

Not saying there is much to it but the story goes they are not happy with the "profit potential" of the track since the one big "money maker" per year apparently was not what they expected it to be.

I ran the National and divisional races this year at Wild Horse. I would say the car count and spectator count was down from previous years. I will add that I think they did an OUTSTANDING job in the way we were treated and the upkeep of the facility during the events. Much better than before they were in place. Yes there are still issues but after seeing what they did in the short time I think it is a big step in the right direction.

All I am trying to say is get out there and support the track. I went down for an AZ fastest street car/AZ S/ST assoc race earlier this year. I will try and make another trip or two if I can. I have been to 3 races there since the beginning of the year and it is 350 miles one way for me, so I sure hope the locals can get out there as much as possible. I want to try and support the facility the only way I know how.
