Is Cecil County Dragway really faster than Maple Grove?

Is Cecil County Dragway really faster than Maple Grove? - 10/02/13 09:18 PM

I hear a lot about Cecil County being faster than Maple Grove. I always heard at least a tenth of a second. But now I'm hearing claims of 2 to 3 tenths faster. Is this really the case? I am looking for an all time best time slip before I put my car away for the winter. Is it worth the trip to Cecil County? It's a 45 min drive. Maple Grove is 5 min away.

It depends on your car. I went to maple for the first time in six years and couldn't get my car to come off the starting line on nitrous. So my car is a ton faster because of the starting line. I would say 2 tenths for a car with out traction problems. I remembered why I drive a half hour longer to go to Cecil after my trip to maple. Shame maple is only 45-50 mins from my house. Oh and the track people told me not to bring my car back on a Friday street night again.

Maybe it's just shorter. As in maybe the clocks aren't setup the same. I think this happens alot when guys talk about a certain track being faster. JMO

It's at sea level and has the best starting line out of all those tracks you mentioned. It is also concrete to the 1/8. The track is faster if it short how do people get better mph? What did they shorten that too? Lol

My times & MPH from Cecil and MIR were always comparable, and both are close-to-sea-level tracks w/ decently prepared starting lines. I know if I go to other tracks like 75-80 or Mason-Dixon that both the altitude and / or traction issues are going to slow me down.

the question should be....Why doesn't maple grove prep the track or care about the racers?

I would say not much if any. When I had my 63 there a few years ago with the old eng it ran 11.60's on an average day. It had run as fast as 11.49 at Cecil on a great day but average days at Cecil were 11.70's and 60's. Ron

Both are way faster than where I run. My old car was always fastest at it's few trips out east.

THIS
After the one time I went there this year, I am never going back. Nice facility, management just sucks.

100% yes on that, and its just proven by the amnt of people who race week after week.Atco is the fastest....when they prep properly.( here in the east anyway)

I agree with that Kevin. I went there a few years back to see the Hemi shootout at the Dutch Classic and when I asked the guys at the gate if the Hemi cars ran yet they looked at me like I had two heads and had no idea what I was talking about. Ron

Have you ever watched how the water races towards the topend of the track when it rains there?

It doesn't take much downhill to make some good mph.

I've been to both many times over the years. Cecil is at a lower satic level than MG so a slight edge to Cecil there. This time of the year though I think the Grove can be faster. There are a ton of trees at the MG and the adjusted air there can be REAL good. I've never had traction issues there but have always run there during special events. Go the weekend after the Dutch and it should be good.

I'll have to see if I can find the video from when the Dakota R/T club had it's National event at Cecil. It started raining and the video clearly showed the water rushing to the stripe. That HAS to help somewhere on the timeslip. HOW MUCH it helps will be the point of contention.

Cecil looks like it is down hill to me

I think rather than have altitude correction factors - that the NHRA should simply grade the higher elevation track to make them down hill. How much down hill should be the "built-in" correction factor.

Your track always have bad air? Repave the track to make it down hill!

Cecil does have a slight downhill pitch to it.Fast as hell.

i run at both tracks. maple is a lot closer time wise. it to me seems cecil may be .1 faster. i do have my best times on my bike at cecil.

now compare numidia to cecil and i say .3 to different.

numidia about 1050ft
maple 540ish
cecil i think 200 ft or so

Re: Is Cecil County Dragway really faster than Maple Grove? - 10/04/13 01:54 AM

First off do you guys realize how much the track would need to be pitched down hill to make your car faster????

I ran my 10.oh truck at midnight at cecil and it went 10.007 134.97 next morning we ran the grove first pass of the trailer we went a 10.023 135.42
the 60 was a 1.42 at cecil and 1.44 at the grove.

Anybody else keep a log book? lets see the real numbers for comparison on some consistent cars.

Also Atco and maple grove have a tighter rollout. If I leave my cecil shims in my switch i'm red at both atco and the grove

Re: Is Cecil County Dragway really faster than Maple Grove? - 10/04/13 03:11 AM

Back in the late 90s when I was racing my 71 340 Duster (stock), I could run 14.0 all day at MG, but no 13.90s. I swore the car had 13.90s in it so I kept going back to MG week after week trying to get that 13.9 time slip but it would just never get any better than 14.0. So I drove it down to Cecil County one Friday night and ran 14.0 first pass and a 13.9something on the second pass. So is Cecil faster? Maybe, but not by much for me.

Because MG sucks! I live a half hour from MG, but drive right by the exit for MG when I'm on my way to Cecil County. I can haul down there in about an hour if I really push it.

Re: Is Cecil County Dragway really faster than Maple Grove? - 10/04/13 04:12 AM

All I know for sure is what the video showed...
and that when we had the National meet in Tucson - there were a bunch of very long faces when their timeslips were a full second slower than at Cecil. (yeah, I know apples to oranges there)

All the internet bravado about who's ride was faster gets all mixed up when people are posting timeslips from different tracks times of year and obviously different DA and track prep. Everybody enjoys and down-plays having the "geographical" advantage of Sea Level tracks with mineshaft air. But put the group together in one spot and all that goes out the window.

Then all you hear is excuses. LOL
