Your Thoughts On This Cam - 10/02/13 02:25 AM

Looking to replace my MP590 cam and this one looked like a good replacement. Not sure if it would give much of a gain or not?

My present set up is a 408 scat stroker kit with 11.9 comp. 590 cam, ported eddy heads, super victor intake,750hp,TTI step headers.
904 trans,5400 stall,low gear set,4.56 gear and 30x9 slick

I ran a comp flat tappet extremely close to what you are thinking about at the same compression, same headers, same heads but a 727, car weighed 3450 with me. 10.74 at just under 124 as well.
I always thought a good 1.875 header would have been a real nice upgrade. I bet a good roller cam and the header upgrade would pick the car up a good bit.
590 is pretty similar to that comp.

Just curious, what do you shift at and what is your trap RPM with your existing set up?

Re: Your Thoughts On This Cam - 10/02/13 03:08 AM

It will gain you nothing IMO. It has about 9* less duration @ .050 on the intake, witch will give your motor a lower torque peak and less HP

Your current 60 ft. is already better then your ET suggests it should be. You dont need more torque, IMO just more HP. Maybe you have a fuel issue holding your top end back.

This is all based on if the SB MP 590 has the same duration of the BB MP 590 witch is 272* @ .050 And I believe it does, just never measured a SB one myself. But I know how MP worked, they would just cookie cut everything the same.

If you want to change something, go BB

I think the small block 590 is 265@50. Don't think the swap to that comp is worthwhile.

My 416 layed over the last 150-200 feet with that small header and small head. Shift at 66, trapped at 7.

I'm not good at posting links, but to give you a little of an idea, check out the article I wrote testing 8 cams in my 421.
I tested that Lunati and the 590 MP. There is a post on this board about the article. It was titled Keith Dunnuck's Fading Colors I believe.
Or go to Mopar Muscles website and look in the tech archives for Fading Colors,Hughes Engines has it on their website too since I tested one of their camshafts.
The 590 is 271- 272 @ .050 depending on which one you measure.

Re: Your Thoughts On This Cam - 10/02/13 03:48 AM

Keith .. You sure the 590 small block cam isn't 265.
I know the 557 is like 257, doesn't seem right one step up from 557 to 590 would be 15 degrees
I think the 620 for a smallblock might be 272
I have just read several links about the 590 being 265

But I have been wrong before... Lol

I have two small block and one big block590 here that I have measured . Do a search on the top of this page for New Mopar Cam Chart. They used to put the incorrect@ .050 numbers in the specs foe years but updated it a couple years ago. I posted up the correct ones when I saw it.

When I said 272, thats just what I got. A 1* or so difference is not uncommon and expected between grinds and personal measurements.

The 557 is 257, the 251 is incorrect
The 590 is 272, the 265 is incorrect
The 620 is way bigger yet, 280 sounds about right

Re: Your Thoughts On This Cam - 10/02/13 03:19 PM

There were 2 different MP 590 SB cams. At one time Racer Brown was their cam grinder. His 590 had 272 @ .050. I know, had one and had it measured. The grinder now is different and their 590 is 265 @ 050. I know this because I just purchased one last year to repalce the RB that I hurt. Jim

PS: They performed about the same in the car. RB ET'd about .08 better, Same MPH with either.

Re: Your Thoughts On This Cam - 10/02/13 04:10 PM

The original small block "657" grind from Racer Brown was 312/606". They were 271 @ .050. The newer non Racer Brown MP is 312/ 590. I have both here. I also have a new MP 590 from last fall for a big block that measures 271 @ .050. Did you measure your new one? Part of the confusion comes from the old literature stating that the @ .050 duration is 85% of advertised, but MP used advertised duration numbers from .020 instead of .015 like everybody else.

http://www.4secondsflat.com/RB%20Cam%20Specs.htm

The STX-22 was sold by Mopar back in the 70's as a purple shaft cam. That was my orginal cam. The current cam is a 590 but ground by a different cam grinder. I contacted Zippy and he comfirmed that RB no longer grinds the 590.

Re: Your Thoughts On This Cam - 10/04/13 12:59 AM

Guess I'll wait until I tear into the motor and see how the cam & lifters look before thinking of what I'd replace it with. I originally had a crane cam that was a little smaller but I lost it due to a faulty edm lifter. The 590 was a quick cheap replacement and gave me the best performance to date. Thanks for the replies and info anyway.
