How tight can I run valve lash?

How tight can I run valve lash? - 09/11/13 11:40 PM

440 .557 mopar cam calls for .028 intake .032 exhaust. This seems excessive and a waste of lift. How tight can I go before damage occurs? Am I stuck with this lash and need to either let it be or buy a newer design camshaft? I would like to try the small lunati voodoo solid to b honest. Thanks for your time

You being honest means that you want some assurance/permission to buy a new cam. Go for it.

The ramps on the older cams require more lash than the newer. Set it like it says and you wont have any lash problems.

12 or 14 thou cold will be fine you might want to check piston to valve

Normally .010 tighter (maybe a tiny bit more) is okay on the loose lash cams like the Mopar and Isky with .028 lash. If it seems to be better with tighter then you need a bigger cam

Sounds like I need to break the feeler gauges out. Lunati recommended this cam http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=171007248992&cmd=VIDESC
What would you recommend?

I pushed the 590 grind even further, setting the lash down to .014 cold with iron heads. My big stroker liked it. The ramps will be more gentle when you tighten the lash, so the duration goes up, but the first part of the actual lift is a bit lazy. The danger point is not letting the valve seat properly, which with .014 hot shouldn't be an issue at all.

My Isky solid roller calls for .026 and I set em at .014 cold w/alum. heads which brings it to around .20 hot and never an issue after 8+ years.
