What will my junk run? (update with vid link) - 08/08/13 02:14 AM

Heading out to Muncie dragway friday night for some test& tune/grudge race action.I've been driving this thing on the street since 2010 and the LM2 and I have the tune pretty well sorted out.Any and all guesses are welcome. Car is a 67 Satellite, only light weight parts are the M-1 single plane intake and the Edelbrock heads.Has factory iron A/C(working),304 stainless turbo manifolds,5 gallon air/water intercooler tank in trunk,M.S.D. boost timing master, 20 gallon fuel cell,750 proform carb. Crane powermax cam 260-204 dur..427"lift IN. 272-216 dur. .454" lift ex. 112 lobe sep. 8.0:1 compression 383 .030" o.s.Stock 1966 bottom end.2 1/2" exhaust to rear axle. Ancient 11" fairbanks 2500ish stall convertor,Copes pro street valvebody,3.55 gears in an 8 3/4 rear. 315-60-15 tires and homemade(dimensionally copied)caltracs.Calvert 9 way adjustable rear shocks, very"tired" front shocks.I'm running 15 lbs. boost read in the intake plenum, and plan to fill the cooler tank with ice. My best guess on weight is about 3850-3900 with my 205 lbs. aboard. If they have the scales open at the track I'll get a real weight on it. This thing was built to be a cruiser, not a race car.

I'm going to take a wild stab at it and say 11.70s @ 120 mph.

I agree, based on the very simple formula that you doubled the hp of a normally aspirated motor due to 15 psi boost.

I'll give it a go, but boosted combos take some work to get the ET...Erroring on the side of "I have the tune pretty well sorted out", I am gonna go out on a limb and say 10.45....with more mph than it should have for the ET...if it hooks.

see I'd agree before reading Dzuters posts, he has a 360 w/ about the same tame build and he's deep into the 10's. He does have a better stall and trans brake... I'll say your 1st few runs will be in the mid-11's and get better as you figure out what it likes best

Yeah,I saw his times but I just don't see it going any better than a mid to low11 @120 ish.If it got anywhere close to a 10 I would be thrilled to death.

Re: What will my junk run? - 08/08/13 03:18 PM

What turbo(s)?

A lot depends on how well the brakes hold. Building boost on the starting line is a real pain on the foot brake.

Mine went 11.70's@123mph on 9~10psi off the foot brake my third pass in the car first night out. I haven't made a pass without the trans brake since!

If you can hold boost at the line it will easily go in the 10's. Should go 125mph+ regardless of traction.

I have the same chinese GT-45 you have.It will build boost on the line easy enough, but it's never been on a clean, prepped surface. It's made tons of"passes" on rural test tracks, but I don't know if it will spin, hook&go,or hook&bust 8 3/4.

A 4500 stall with a trans brake and slicks hasn't broken an 8 3/4 yet. You should not have to worry

Re: What will my junk run? - 08/09/13 06:11 AM

I'll guess 11.45@123

Re: What will my junk run? - 08/09/13 11:10 AM

Try leaving at 5psi to start, if it hooks just keep adding boost. Start with the shocks full tight.

BTW...I have a s475 Borg Warner turbo, not the gt45.

Sorry about the turbo mistake,my bad.I had planned to take it as high as the brakes will hold then back it down next run if it spun.

Any pics of the set-up? I'm already planning my next build and could use a few ideas.

11.71

Re: What will my junk run? (update with vid link) - 08/11/13 02:18 AM

Well, it appears as though we have some very accurate guessers(but I suspect crizila "cheated"). The best I got was a 7.65 @ 96 eighth mile and a 11.71 @121.32 m.p.h. quarter. The first mistake I made was deciding to ice the intercooler tank. LEAN,LEAN,LEAN. First run, torqued it up on the line and backfired on the green. Later runs, after throwing bunches of jet at,it were better, and the fourth pass was "clean" but still went 12.0:1 a.f.r.at the stripe. The 60 ft. sucked balls.1.96 was the best. The car dead hooked(hats off to the "action traction" crew at Muncie dragway)and wallowed along from the 2500 r.p.m. stall speed until the 3500 r.p.m. sweet spot where it really begins to run good.I guess with 3.55"s and a 30" tall tire,a short stroke and a 2500 stall convertor, thats as good as it will get. With street grade traction it's much more impressive off the line. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqPpT9_N0nA :correction:reviewed my LM-2 runs on the computer and the convertor only stalls at 2200r.p.m., couldn't tell accurately before a good "dead hook"

Congrats on the first few passes!

Sorry we were off so far on our guesses. LOL

Re: What will my junk run? (update with vid link) - 08/11/13 01:19 PM

Congrats on a good first outing. 121mph is enough to get you way down in the 11's.

If you're really going to race it more, a transbrake is the easy answer to getting good ET's. My car did about the same off the foot brake the first day, and by the end of the first night with the trans brake it went 10.99@123mph.

My current converter will only stall 2300 without boost. Its taken some time for me to get the timing/fuel right so that it spools up quicker, but it definitely can be done.

Another thing too is that playing with the timing can be worth a lot. My car picked up 3mph going from 21deg of timing to 24~25deg last time I went to Norwalk.

Congrats. 121mph in that pig is making some good power!
