Blew out a freeze plug on the BIG end

Blew out a freeze plug on the BIG end - 08/01/13 04:15 PM

This past Saturday at Englishtown I had a freeze out plug come out just past the 1000 ft mark. Was on a good pass, went 6.4 in the 8th @ 110 pullin like a freight train when the rear washed out sending me side ways.I did my best but still tagged the wall with the left fender and the right front tire blew when it curled under, wrecked the rim too.
Looks like bolt in plugs and a belly pan are in my near future.
Still looking for a left fender & park housing.
All skid marks were on the track

I feel for you. Sux to crunch such a cool car. I will keep an eye out for a parts car.
Fix the stuff needed to get back out there and do body work this winter. It's still an awsome car even with "a little stripper chaffing"

Maybe look to run a leak-down test also. Glad to see you saved it from a lot worse fate .

That'll buff out - 08/01/13 05:49 PM

I took this pic on Sunday, it was the first thing I saw as I got in to the pits. I recognized the car right away and was bummed to see it all crumpled up. As I was looking at it on the flat bed he came up and told me what happened. We talked a little and he didn't seem terribly upset. Like we say here in NY whadayagonnado?

In the end, it's just a car and it can be fixed. Hate to think of what could have happened if he was unable to 'make the save'.

Re: Blew out a freeze plug on the BIG end - 08/01/13 06:54 PM

A freind of mine had the same thing happen years ago at Speed World in the finals of a 10.5 tire Outaw race, he qualified #1, set low ET and top MPH and won the final BUT a passenger side freeze plug in the head popped out right at the finish line sending him into the left guard rail at 173.+ MPH, he bounced off that rail and bounced accross the track to right guard rail and bounced off of that and ended up in the middle of the track Luckily he didn't hit his competitor in the other lane It did totaled the car He was bruise and shook up but other than that he was unhurt, that is the major thing. They welded all the freeze plugs up in the heads after that. (it was a 460 type Furd )He was on the phone the next day, Monday, trying to get a new chassis built so he could race at the next race that month Drag racing can get in your blood I'm glad your oaky and not hurt and the car is fixable

Re: Blew out a freeze plug on the BIG end - 08/01/13 07:10 PM

Glad your ok AL...could have been a real mess.

Three things that cause soft plug failures.

1)Shallow type soft plugs. I hate them. I only use deep plugs . Period.
2) Detonation and vibration. Enuff said.
3) Painted or dirty soft plug bores. When people paint blocks, they often dont tape off ( or clean afterwartds) the paint in the soft plug openings. Paint wont help the problem.

I lightly clean the bore, a small bead of #2 Permatex, three " stakes" with a chisel, and never an issue. Some circle track builds take a different approach with a more positive lock procedure. I also do use brass plugs, as I believe they conform better to the bores, and have more bite...

Re: Blew out a freeze plug on the BIG end - 08/01/13 07:22 PM

For the block, why not tack weld a "bur" to the block once the plugs are in. Hit it up on 3 or 4 spots around the plug and then it won't "Pop" out.

I may do that the next time my engine is out of the car!

Re: Blew out a freeze plug on the BIG end - 08/01/13 07:26 PM

Had the deep ones in there, not staked.I think I will go with the bolt in style

Re: Blew out a freeze plug on the BIG end - 08/01/13 07:34 PM

Glad that you were able to save it! Getting sideways at that speed must have been a "pucker ride" for sure!!
You might want to consider installing a 'chute.

Re: Blew out a freeze plug on the BIG end - 08/01/13 07:37 PM

Put a layer of Good silicone sealer on the outside whole plug they will not come out if you let it totally setup. And if you dojn't have to hit them hard get another plug DO NOT USE THE RUBBER BOLT IN TYPE

I blew a FP on my friends FED with a blown/racegas 392 Hemi.
Not fun when the engine is in front of you and you get soaked with HOT water on the finish line.
I now own the car and it will get a blown KB hemi and methanol and no cooler needed.

Hope you get it back together soon

could have been worse. glad you are ok. Buddy of mine had a similar issue, his hose went, same deal pushed the fender into the rail... his is a 62 4 door. Hope you can find a fender and get it back down the track soon.

Re: Blew out a freeze plug on the BIG end - 08/02/13 02:34 AM

Last time that happened to me it was in the burnout box, and it popped out due to my head gasket failing and pressurising my cooling system. U may wanna look into that

I have a park lamp housing but that's all, lemme know if you need it. Lenses are repopped and widely available. Try Tony's Parts for a fender, unless you want to go 'glass.

That is on the top of the list. Will have some bolt in style plugs on Tuesday.I'll just install the missing one for now so I can run the car and check the cooling system for hydrocarbons. If it is in fact a head gasket leaking with the increased boost, the motor has to come out to pop the heads

The event at E/town last weekend was the National Speedway/Hampton Raceway reunion with an award ceremony for the greats of drag racing from Long Island.I was invited to display my car as it's been raced on Long Island for over 40 years

NOT the way I wanted to be remembered at this event

Re: Blew out a freeze plug on the BIG end - 08/02/13 04:55 AM

from looking at the pics.....i think that fender could be fixed...

call Thriftway, tell em a little pull with some weld on tabs and a few taps with some tension on the fender, you be surprised what memory metal has. It might straighten out pretty good

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, and YEA it could have been a lot worse.

Re: Blew out a freeze plug on the BIG end - 08/02/13 05:10 AM

As the saying goes, "Let sleeping Dogs lie" as you unbolt the fender. I'll keep an eye out for Ron. LOL
Al, you're a good friend and a fun presence at any event, Very fortunate that you steered clear of the medivac and hospital. Your experience has me spooked, but thinking.
But as they say in Drag racing, get back in the saddle as quick as you can to shake off the jitters. Just don't shake out another FP.

Thats about the only way they would hurt you as they love all people. You give them a treat and you got them as friends for life. Seriously though I am very glad you did not get hurt. The only spare parts I have for a 63 right now is a hood. Ron

Drawers were clean
The safty crew were there before I could get my helmut off!
The guy at my drivers window made sure I was OK,then advised me to climb out the passenger side 'cause if I opened the door it would further the damage.Got out and was joking with the safety crew. When they asked me "Are you hurt in any way??

My reply was I was in no worse shape then when I entered the car

Nobody wants to see something like this happen, but hopefully it will sell some diapers to your buddys and when this happens to them it will be a non event. I have been in your shoes and it was very depressing and a lot of work/money/time to get it back together. Today it looks like new and I'm a little wiser. Stuff happens. Do what you can to minimize it happening to you.
