New to me cut up 69 Barracuda - 07/22/13 04:42 AM

Hey guys it's been a long time since I posted on here, but the good news is I still have the same pc so my avatar pic from '04 wasn't too hard to find. I still have my cars, the family still has the challenger and 73 charger, I've been lurking around the race forum for a few months now drooling over the cars and what not.

Long story short I finally got my hands on a drag car. Maybe not the most obvious choice for a first car but it's the car that presented itself. I wanted to go with a nostalgia car, mostly period correct, she shot down the F.E.D. idea pretty directly so that narrowed it down to a mopar with doors preferably older than 72. After a horse trade for a roller, I ended with the driveline the car was last run with years ago. It's a Roth built 440, 727 set up that needs a once over just due to sitting, the heads are fresh, and with any luck it will make it to the track next year.

As for the car it's cut to pieces, it has sheet metal tubs, rear floors, dash and firewall. Stock floors, the body is all steel aside from the hood and front bumper. The rear is a 9" with I believe 4.88's the rear has leafs, hard welded 3 pt ladder bars, wheelie bar and 32x16.5-15 rubber. The windows are all lexan, it's a stock mopar front end with welded up shock mounts and no inner fenders, you get the point it's a cut up car that appears to have always been a race car. I was told it was raced out of Cooperstown NY and that's pretty much all I know about the car's history. Has anyone ever seen this car before?

I'll be asking a lot of questions while I try to get this thing back to the track where it belongs, so that's why I wanted to make a quick intro and let you see what I'm working on, TC.

The motor is assembled as a short block currently with fresh heads that have had a lot of porting/valve work. The casting date on the block is 6-24-65, odd to me to have a 440 that's so early.

C body Imperials and Chrysler came with 440 in 1966

Looks like a fun project and it came from a very cool baseball town.

Thanks guys, it's obviously a project due to sitting but the fab work is done. I got into it for really fair money which is the main reason I got this car. The body style wouldn't be my first choice but I must say it grew on me rather quickly.

My short list to get done in the next month or so is to paint the cage black (pastel purple doesn't do it for me), all of the tin work around the tubs needs repainted, the front end needs a rebuild with bushings and what not, and I want to drag the car to the track as it sits to see how much updating it needs and what times it's allowed to run. Then I will know what direction to go with the motor.

I think 440s were a 1966 C body option in Dodge and Plymouth too.

Think no longer, Joe.
440's were available in all C-bodies starting in 1966.

RE: Block Stamping

I have never seen a stamping like this. Can anybody give me more info?

I am assuming Roth racing did the motor at one time? From google searches there is a Roth (R and R engine and machine) out of Akron Ohio, maybe the same shop? It appears they run a drag car or two. I posted that pic hoping someone would have seen something similar in the past out of that shop. It has dome pistons, all of the rods/caps are numbered etc.

The pistons are stamped 232-99 and the symbol made me think TRW but I'm honestly not as up on the old speed parts as I could be.

I was hoping someone may have a pic or two of the car in one form or another. I'm fortunate enough to live 30 miles from BSD, I got a lot of great pics of the pro-stock 70 Hemi Duster that Ed Miller built to replicate his original race car, and I'm thinking with the lack of updates on my car it's a fairly solid build to get into nostalgia racing without a ton of fab work. The cages are similar there are a handful of tubes on his car that this one doesn't have, and the trunk area is the only major difference minus the obvious leafs vs coil over rear.

I kind of put off any sort of work to this car trying to figure out the issues with my other car and now have 2 major projects spread around my garage.

To get to the point I'm not going to be in a position to get the BB together for next year and buy the stuff that needs updated and get to the track. If it will work I will be putting a small block in the car to get it on the track.

With that being said, the car is set up for a motor plate, and it has the stock trans cross-member. If I run a SB with a 727 will the fabbed drive-shafts still work with that setup? This is really the deal breaker and will determine which direction I go from here.
