Hood fasteners rivets

Hood fasteners rivets - 07/09/13 10:59 PM

Need to replace some of the Moroso dzus hood fasteners on the car. Once I remove the old rivet, do I just use a normal aluminum rivet to install new fastener? I have seen some rivets called smash rivets. Anybody have any recommendations on what works best.

Lowed has rivets and rivet washers. Use as short as you can get by with. Use washers any where its pulling into fiberglass. Steel rivets work a little better to hold the mounting plates, alum rivets can work loose on a hood. If you don't mind re-riveting every now and then, alum is ok. I use alum on the button spring plates and springs.
Try to make the rivet pop in the middle of the pull, not right after you get a new bite on the stud.

Thanks for the response. Does anyone else have any input or comments on the smash rivets being used in this circumstance? It may just be obvious to all that you just use a normal aluminum rivet.
Anymore advice would be appreciated.

I think the term "smash rivets" means the rivet needs the other end mushroomed to hold, like in the old steel buildings and in aircraft appication If so I would use the pop rivets, aircarft uses them also but there not as easy to get and of course anything approved by the U.S. Goverment cost a lot more money than the same parts not approved I used steel 1/8x 1/8 or 1/8x 1/4, CRS pop rivets on my Duster hood, same thing on the new hood for the Cuda

I was given a small batch of stainless pop rivets from my neighbor. Not sure where he got them but at the time he was running a RV repair shop. Mostly doing cosmetic repairs and roofs, leaks, etc.

Use aluminum rivets and a backing washer to pull against - if the fiberglass is cracked and pulling through - you may need to do some spot repairs with resin an cloth from the underside - just taker your time. Also a little silicone spray on the dzus fasters makes them turn easier
