Any luck racing with surpentine belts? - 06/10/13 05:07 AM

I have a set-up from March pulleys, but haven't used it as a few guys around here don't like the surpentine style belt.
What's your thoughts? btw, these are bowtie buddies, so I don't put much faith in what they say, lol.

I've road-raced a car with a serpentine belt - to 6000 & back repeatedly for hours - no problem. It's the car's stock setup. As long as your pulleys are aligned properly and the tensioner is good, I don't see a problem.

this set-up doesn't use a tensioner. At least I didn't get one with it. It uses the stock type brackets and slider adjustment.
thanks

My ride came with a serpentine setup.... but no problems here.
It sees 6,500-6,800 every pass and thousands of miles on the street.
The only time it ever had issues was when trying to overdrive a supercharger with the same serpentine belt. No supercharger. No problems.

There is a reason the factory went to it... it has
more surface area to the pulley... if you have the
stuff in line it will last for years with less tension...
still need to have enough tension but you dont need
your long lever bar to tighten it up

I've been running a serpentine belt for a while. Only on the crank to alternator, no issues here

our serpentine kits run to 7500 rpm with zero problems but its got a tensioner designed into the kit.

My SHO motor runs serpentine belts to 7500 rpm through the gears.

Serp belts are great, just very critical for belt alignment and tension. Auto tensioners are really best but even some OEs didn't use them. If you go that route, buy a strain gauge to set the tension correctly.

...but WITH a tensioner in the combo it is a muchO better package ... the bearings, bushings and belts last much longer
