TRW Rocker Shaft needs to be deburred!! - 05/21/13 01:43 AM

Anyone every really looked inside of the mounting holes of a TRW Rocker Arm Shaft?

I Bought a set of Rocker shafts thru summit, Im using ductile adjustable rockers on my 440. I just happened to look inside the nice shiny new shaft and found hefty Burrs inside all but 2 of the mounting holes.
Incredible lack of quality control.

I was going to banana groove them but now im thinking I can ether return them or pop the caps off the ends and run a hone threw them.
I hate to admit it but I cant recall ever scrutinizing a set like this before.
I guess nothing should be taken for granted.

seems anything u buy has to be gone over. i think the only thing u can put on ur car without messin with is wax.

I removed a few of the burrs without removing the 5/8" freeze plugs and if anything of this size was released in your engine I can only assume you would have oil pressure issues in no time!

How would the burrs have gotten out of the shafts ?

If it's as big a burr as he is making it sound I can't see it getting past a ductile rocker without the rocker breaking into pieces first ??? Wait, maybe that is what he means, broken rocker parts ????

Don't get me wrong, what he sees and is dealing with is unacceptable.

I TRY to check all the junk I buy.. and I do deburr
all that stuff... if I feel it didnt flush out with
cleaning I will drill and tap the end to get it out
then put in a pipe plug... the better shafts I have,
have a pipe plug in them already..........JMO

I can use 5/8" freeze plugs or Tap them and use a threaded plug.
The burrs I was able to see are at the larger holes.
I'm sure all of them are in the same shape.

The rocker would break them up just enough to thoroughly distribute them.

All I can say is if you don't open them up you really don't know.

I pulled the caps when I got home and it looked like a porcupine in there!!

I don't care who manufactures them, check, check and more check!

Ive used TRW for years.
What a shame, wish I could take a picture and post it up.
Probably give a lot of guys nightmares.

Yep. I disassembled a set of Harland Sharps that came from them already installed on the shafts simply to look around. When I flushed out an UGLY amount of machining debris from the shafts after removing the screw-in plugs, the first thought that crossed my mind was: "God help somebody who just bolted 'em on and ran 'em out of the package!"

I really like T&D and Harland Sharp. However they both must be entirely dis-assembled cleaned and lubed. The last set of T&D came with specific instruction to install as-is, out of the box, as they had been specially lubed and assembled prior to shipping. I NEVER install a rocker system without cleaning them myself. One shaft was assemble DRY and all of them had gritty adjusters and debris in the system. Inspect and clean every piece of your engine prior to assembly. Don't trust anyone, double check everything.........ah....hold on, that sounds awful........trust everyone but VERIFY everything.

my hughes shafts came with a little note about cleaning before installation of the end pipe plugs. i ran an old shotgun bore brush through them and hosed them out with brake cleaner. didnt have any burs but the little bit of stuff i scrubbed out i wouldn't want going in my engine

I debured mine yesterday what a mess!

I constantly see posts for low oil pressure on these forums.
I always wash and brush out the crank, block passages and the heads.

I guess the list should also include oil pumps and any new Rocker equipment.

I had a similar experience when I bought my Harland Sharp rockers.
