Racing Behind Jet Cars??

Racing Behind Jet Cars?? - 05/20/13 06:34 AM

Last nite Bandimere's had their "Night of Fire and Thunder" which features Nostalgia Fuel Dragsters, Nostalgia Funny Cars, and also Jet Cars, and draws a pretty large fan crowd. After the jets went, they ran the 3rd round of Super Comp cars, then the 3rd round of Super Gas, which I was a part of. From about the 1200' mark to the finish line, my car got to skating around pretty good, and it got a little hairy. After the run, and I got back to my pit space, I heard that one of the racers in the pair behind me had crashed just beyond the finish line--I am sure that it was from the kerosene residue left by the jet cars. The driver was OK, but his car is not, don't know if he will be able to rebuild it or not. Just a heads-up for anyone racing where they have jet cars booked in.

Yea it's a very bad to run after them unless the track work on the surface.

Yea that's stupid. From what I have seen they run the jets last because of that problem.

At least run super gas next and then super comp.

Sorry to hear of the crash and I'd bet it's related to the jets.

There's a reason they are referred to as "track oilers".

Very sorry to hear of the torn up equipment and glad nobody got hurt.

Yaa that's a brilliant suggestion. Run the 100 inch wheelbase cars instead of the LONG wheelbase dragsters. I think you have been out of the sport for so long your not thinking straight to suggest that idea. How about fix the track or don't send anyone down it. Cheese and rice.

Yep Stopped going to anything that says Night Under Fire! Even with my slow junk it was bad.We refused to race at one of these races a few years ago because of the track was junk after the jet cars. More racers should do that. Can not imagine a fast car on small tires or even slicks.

Yes they do use 24gl. in the 1/8.I did some videos and a fast dragster almost lost it at 130mph. http://s93.photobucket.com/user/bentwheel43/media/Mobile%20Dragway%202010%20Videos/SMOV0099.mp4.html

Back in the old days they used to run bikes and street cars after the jets. But hey, that was before they even did track prep so there really wasn't much difference. They tried running the fast cars first at US 30 and they refused to run after Tommy Dargewich almost crashed. So out came the street cars.

Re: Racing Behind Jet Cars?? - 05/20/13 03:49 PM

Around here they also smash cars on the dragstrip with Monster trucks and then clean-up about 90% of the debris and want to send cars down. That cost me a set of slicks already, and I'm not too interested about repeating that mistake. Now I just don't run the Monster Truck Night of Fire circuses.

Well, the USED to. Now we have no drag strips, so I guess I won't have to worry about it.

The grandstands were removed and it's closed. That's all I know for sure.

Supposedly they will reopen in time for the National event next February. I have no clue about whether they will actually open again before then or if there will ever be any more than just a National event there once a year. For now, everyone has either parked their stuff or it towing it to Tucson or out of state to race.

We generally run after the jet cars at the Fallon divisonal...It SUCKS...The entire track is prety much a mess so I try to come up as late as possible. Wont make Fallon this year so thats one thing I dont need to worry about I guess.

I was only running 116/117 at the time and that was enough,,,,worse part was prying my fingers from the steering wheel at the ET shack so I could take the ticket from the guy.

It may have been fun but its a son of a gun to clean up the skid marks and those are not on the track.

Al--If you don't make the Fallon race, you could consider joining us at the Div 5 race the following weekend in Denver. A little farther tow............

Re: Racing Behind Jet Cars?? - 05/21/13 01:09 AM

In my experience it is a bad idea to even be in the staging lanes behind the jets because when they leave they blow all the small debris back into the lanes and if your trying to do some between rounds maintenance on your valve train with the covers off guess where all that stuff goes...

Re: Racing Behind Jet Cars?? - 05/21/13 02:55 AM

tboomer--Yes the car that crashed is a BBC powered VW, owned by Jason Schade, I believe that he won one of the Div 7 races at Firebird in late Feb/early Mar. As far as the DA, I don't think my tag ever went over 7600 or so. However, the 8500 DA is not at all uncommon, especially in summer months, and I know there have been times when it was over 10,000 at Bandimere. On a typical summer race day you might see 6600' when you first run in the morning, then DA will climb to maybe 9200' by mid afternoon, then as sun sets, it will drop into the 7000' range. Coupled with changeable winds, and frequent afternoon showers, tuning to run the super classes indexes can be a real challenge. My throttle-stop settings can go from 2.55 seconds to 1.60 in the course of 1 days racing.

Per some ADRA honcho's I talked to last weekend, it will reopen next year. They have hired a new track manager. Bondurant and the jet boat people are already on board. The new stands they are installing will have shade and inclosed box seats.
