Good 8 inch converter and transbrake - 05/19/13 08:36 PM

Looking for a trans brake and good 8 inch converter. Not trying to black list any certain brand, just was curious what has worked for you guys. Also without sounding to uninformed ,is the trans brake as easy as just changing the valve body?I know my trans had a brake on it before I bought it,but just has a reverse manual TA in it now.Just trying to research a little before I pull the trigger. Thanks in advance for any opinions.

I've had a T/A reverse VB brake for years... I've been
very happy with it BUT its not a low band apply... I
bought it well before they came out with the LBA...
and I like my 8" T/A conv.. its been in my car for
better than 10 years and its a 5600 stall and MOST time
I launch right up on the stall(no chip)

Is the Low Band Apply a good thing to have?i know it's a big no no to let off in first with my current valve body correct?Burnout in second into high, never starting in first because of the sprag.....?Does a LBA change this?

I believe the trans I have now is a ProTrans, but I don't have much info on how or what's in it.I bought it from Grape Ape a few years back and it was fresh but he couldn't remember exactly what was in it.He told me to call Dave and ask,but its been awhile and I'm sure he wouldn't remember, unless he keeps files.

Dave stamps a seriel(SP?) number on his trans. on the bell housing lip directly above the starter Write it down and give him a call He usually paints the main case black and leaves the tailshaft unpainted on all of his trans. BTW, if you don't have billet drum now, get one Especially now with a trans brake I have used many 8 inch race converters, many. The best one I've had is a Turbo Action SS/AH 8 inch race converter used in a street and strip pump gas wedge No matter who you have make your converter make sure and tell them it is for a Trans. brake application

Thanks for all the info and yeah the trans is painted just as you described.I'll look for the number tomorrow.I know Grape Ape had a brake so hopefully it has a billet drum.I remember he sold the converter separate, and switched the brake for the manual valve body. Are they (brake) easy to install?

By the way I put a T/A J conv in my Rampage with a
518 trans... test to start in a few weeks... its a
8" behind a 416 ci and Paul said it should stall at
5000 with 500 ft lbs of torque... I have 520 ft lbs

8" A-1 and Griner, All the converter companys do a good job with their products. With Marv selling his interest In A-1, I would probably lean towards T/A, Those guys have been doing Mopar for a very long time. As far as the brake?! I like the Griner. It's fast, consistent and expensive but it has won me a LOT of races.

As far as availibility, here are a couple of numbers:

TRANZACT OF INDY.
I will never use anything else. The best. They are sponsors on this site too! Right up at the top.
Goodluck trying to get a Griner.

FYI he stole his design from Griner.... I personally would not support a thief by purchasing his product...

I have heard this exact same thing from several people. And also that Joe at one time worked as an assistant for Griner.
The above is why I first bought a reverse manual valve body from Griner, and later a low band apply brake from Griner. The guy who did my trannies( Jim Paquette) who anybody in the Ford stock and super stock ranks is well aware of) recommended only the Griner Mopar brake when he built my trannies. That was plenty good enough endorsement for me.

Re: Good 8 inch converter and transbrake - 05/20/13 05:25 AM

my junk runs a TA 8" converter with mech diode, very solid converter. has lasted years without needing any work done to it. i use the A&A Ultimate brake with LBA & safe neutral, very quick release brake, i'm sold on this combo. John Cope used to sell Grinners, but now he doesn't. not sure what that means.... but i've never heard of complaints with A&A, but i have with Grinner.

A patent only last 7 years then it can go on the
open market... the 7 years is usually long enough
for the company to get a good foot hold in the market...
I had 5 patents but all were for Chrysler... yeah
I got a few bucks for each.. and they are in every
production car out there... Chrysler trades patents
so no one has to pay anyone... if they would have
sold mine I could have gotten royalties

To my understanding they made 2 J conv... BB was a 9"
and a SB J was a 8" for the W-2 engines way back...
but mine is a 8" and Paul did say it was a J based
on the numbers
