440 or 413? - 05/13/13 03:33 PM

Hi guys

I have one motor for rebuild and Iam bit confused as code what is stamped on passenger side of block is 3698830 what should be 440cid RB, BUT on right side of distributor there is surface where is stamped codes like:
416 .060
10.88

So what should I trust?

You dont trust either... measure the bores... I dont
remember what the bore was on a 413 but it looks
like the stamped number up front is a .060 over..
just measure it when you pull it apart

413 has a 4.18" bore

440 has a 4.32" bore

I thought 440's all had 440 followed by a letter on the "pad"

Whats it say on the casting side of block and what is casting date on side??? a 413 to go to 4.25 bore would have to have been bored .080.

They would until you machine the info off , or it was an over the counter block that never had info stamped in it.

Do you have access to a sonic checker ?

Sounds like the valley end rails were machined and info by whomever did it stamped on there. A 413 bored to 4.340 would be bigger than 416. The 416 is probably a reference number by the rebuilder.

What is the date stamped on the back of the bearings ?

Also the 060 may not be an overbore indication , better yet the block may have been decked that much. I had a 69 440HP that had the valley end rails machined and it was just stamped 020. The block was .030 if I remember right , I figured out the block had been decked .020 .

Yep, that number represents a 73 to early 75 440
