Transmission Cooler Mounting pics - 04/21/13 03:37 AM

Hey guys,

Just looking for some pics of how you guys are mounting your transmission coolers. I have the biggest B&M stacked plate unit that you can get, and I am not using a fan. Wanted to mount it in front of the rad, and just looking for some ideas as to how you guys are doing yours. This is on an a-body if that matters.

Thanks!
Matthew

This is how I did it on my Rampage... I welded some
mounts on the rad tanks

You DON'T want something TOOOOO big ... it will kill some of the stall-speed.

I have the same cooler on the race car and just attached
it with the tie rap kit that you can buy for this job

I have a clutch fan on the motor, and an elec. pusher, so I couldn't mount to the rad.
I apologize for the crappy pic, and your grille support might be different, but I just hung it from the grille support, then made a brace to support the bottom.

I mount mine under the back of the vehicle, I'm sure its wrong:

Nothing wrong with it in the rear if it gets air...
yours has a fan... that plenty fine... is the fan on a
thermo switch.... IF my Rampage needs more cooler I'm
gonna put 1 or 2 more in series in the back with a
fan.. but testing is needed(soon to come)

yes it has a thermoswitch on the *in* side wired to the bat.

Cool.... IF I need more cooling I'll test to see if
a air deflector will work or a fan... if I go with a
fan it will have a thermo switch on it

I have clutch fan on my engine as well...does this mean that the cooler will not work properly in front of the rad?

In the driver's side fender of a Duster.

It doesnt mean it wont work BUT you might be blocking
off needed air flow to the radiator.. thats dependent
on how close your radiator is to being maxed out

well my rad is pretty big. Its not an a-body rad, but one that I got out of a late 80's 318 fifth avenue, a little trimming and it fits...shroud and fan from it too...Even on hot days sitting in traffic, my temps never get over 195 according to my mechanical gauge.

Also, I have about close to 2" between the cooler and the rad where I have mounted it (it is mounted off of the hood latch support)

Re: Transmission Cooler Mounting pics - 04/22/13 12:37 AM

No, it just means I did not have any room to mount directly in front of the rad, haha.

I am planning on putting a trans temp gauge in this season, as I am worried the cooler doesn't get sufficient airflow at low speed, IE in pits, staging, etc. without having a fan pulling the air through

I am tucking the trans cooler behind the grill of the Valiant.

Re: Transmission Cooler Mounting pics - 04/22/13 12:57 AM

This might not be right on the post, but something to think about with trans cooler locations and lines. Had a bad experience earlier this year. Had the alternator belt break - which took out the blower belt - which took out the trans lines ( pretty much in their stock locations at the time ). Unfortunately this occurred going through the lights at 128. Entire back of car was drenched in trans fluid and I had a "depends" time trying to get it stopped. Lines are now incased in square tubing where they intersect the belt area.

Trans fluid temp WILL have an effect on stall rpm.

Re: Transmission Cooler Mounting pics - 04/22/13 02:59 AM

Not a trans cooler, car is a handshaker, but my PS cooler. I think if you mount it away from the radiator it is just as effective without any chance of heat transfer between the 2.

Here's mine.

Put a BIG cooler on it... you can always cover some of it with tape/shield if it's too efficient, you can't go the other way!

Re: Transmission Cooler Mounting pics - 04/22/13 04:11 AM

Thanks for the pics guys! Mine is mounted similar to how Rob has his.

Question for you guys, especially Crizila- I am assuming that the trans cooler lines HAVE to be run on the inside of the frame rail? I couldn't find anything about this in the NHRA rule book, and want to know for sure since my new headers are pretty damn close to the inner frame rail, and running them on the outside would make my life easier IF it is allowed.

Mine is mounted out back as well, crappy picture but it is in there above the wheelie bars, but you get the idea. Oh yeah soory about the dirt was the end of the year lasyear when I took it.

No, nothing in the rule book ( in the general regs section ) on trans cooler line routing. Like many, my original lines ran along the left pan rail and then to the bottom of the rad tank. I routed them the same way until they were over the K member ( about mid pan ) and then ran them left in a square tubing shield past the belt area to the inside of the left frame rail and then forward. Since I have a rad with a built in trans cooler, I still utilize it (in line) with my external cooler. The in & out fittings from my rad make right angles to stay clear of the belt area. Losing a fan belt ( by itself )would not likely take out the cooler lines. Losing a blower belt is another story. It actually bent the eye bolt ( trailer tie-down) in the first pic. I only brought this up as a warning for those running something larger than a single groove belt - Serpentine belts, blower belts, etc. Easiest solution for me was to enclose the lines in the "danger" zone.

Mine is on the subframe close to the transmisson.

Re: Transmission Cooler Mounting pics - 04/22/13 07:15 PM

I dont mind mounting the cooler a lengthy distance
from the trans... more line is just more fluid... most
of us put larger pans on the trans to get more volume
so the line helps for more volume
