Small block rear main studs - 04/20/13 11:30 PM

I cant get the oil pump on because the main studs are too long. This happened on an old build and I think I just used a stock bolt but I dont want to do that this time. This is a fairly high hp combo this time. What is the best fix for this?

Machine the cap and shorten the stud

I don't really have the equipment to do the machine work.........what about a arp bolt or a #8 bolt?

I have cut the stud so that it doesn't stick out but a few threads past the nut and then grinded just enough metal off of the pump to clear. I have heard of people just putting a bolt in.

I've done it both ways... cut the cap and studs or
just use the bolts in the rear

Used the stock bolts w/ the washers that came with the studs to try a spread the load a little better.

Arp has a twevle point nut with washer style end. Cut the stud and install the nut. This is correct way to do this. Anyhting else is make shift. I have posted this enough it just should be standard issue by now Arp should have corrected this a long time ago and just included the nut with the set.

this is what I do no need to cut the cap

I cut the stud and used the 12 pt nut with no washer. A valve tip grinder really works good to make the end of the stud look good, but it isn't necessary.

I made almost 630 hp and used the stock bolt.

ARP sent me a new bolt but it bottomed out right at the point where it hit the main - it looked torqued, but it was not - and the cap would have moved...

Thats exactly what I do now. I used to cut the cap about .180, now just dont use the washer. A small grind is sometimes necessary on the oil pump boss. I also finish it nice with the valve grinder and a nice little radius afterwards. The radius sometimes helps it clear the bottom of the pump better as well.

I had spoke to ARP about this before, just dont think its anything they will ever address. The key to NOT using a washer is to properly burnish the nut and " seat" in.I psoke to one of their engineers once about this, and the nut handles a significant load, close to what the washer will do ( and WAY more than we need to worry about here anyhow), but more important was that the underside of the nut, and the pump washer boss were brunished in so to speak.

Here's a picture of mine. Looks like I cut the top of the nut but I had left it on the stud so I knew how much to take off and had just barely touched the nut with the grinding wheel.

Nice! Probably what I should have done.

if you cant use the washer,anti-seize under the nut will help with the torque number

ARP thread lube is all I use. All the torque numbers for their fasteners is with their lube so it's best to stick with it.
