revonator ignition? anyone using this?

revonator ignition? anyone using this? - 04/15/13 11:29 AM

Im running the MP Orange box on my 65 426 and Ive not been happy with what I believe is an ignition issue.
The motor was dinoed with the current distributor and coil set up and the carb set up I don't think would on and off change in performance as it seems to .
So I was looking into this.
Otherwise I will run the 7AL2 I have on the shelf
I would like to use the more stock looking type ignition approach if for nothing else the ascetics.
Anyone tried this set up from RT Garage??
The performance gains they claim would be great if they are Proven.

Holy Shiznits!!
That thread is more like a rope!!!
I guess that would be a yes on it working.

A good friend installed one on a 440/6 roadrunner last summer. This guy is definitely old school. He was absolutely shocked at how well it ran. figured at least 15-20hp (seat of pants). Starts much better too. I'll be using it on my cars soon as well.

I ordered mine today, 201 shipped to the house.
I guess the price went up with their popularity.
I'll let you know how it works out.

Try Rick at Firecore, he sells them as well and I just got mine from him a week ago...

I plan to test it on the dyno versus the MSD set up my engine guy uses...

I am willing to bet there will be no difference on my motor which is a good thing as i am going for a stock appearance and the black Rev-n-ator looks closer than an MSD set up...

Might try the Chrome box i used to use as a comparison as well if the initial tuning goes well and I can afford another couple pulls.

Cheers,

Arnie

I ran a Rev-N-Nator in the Charger but didn't like it.
The MP distributor is set to 17 initial with a max of 31 degrees to avoid detonation on the crappy CA 91 octane gas. The REV box detonated at 31 degrees. I had to back it down to 27. This put my initial at 13 and the car felt lazy and choppy from idle. I didn't notice an improvement at WOT either, just about as fast as with a Chrome ECU.
Also, the REV box isn't compatible with vacuum advance, and I want/need that. I like to drive my car and even though it is an old style carbureted big block, I'd prefer to maximize fuel mileage as best I can.
Last year I drove 400 miles with the REV and averaged 11.3 mpg. On the way home I ran the Chrome box and vac advance and got 12.9. Not huge, but it helps.

That's unfortunate. Now that you mention it No on e had mentioned the vacuum advance. I of course have a MP vac advance distributor.
If this is going to be a Problem perhaps I should rethink this change.
All IM looking for is a Stable , dependable ignition.
I was hoping it was a bolt in with the possibility of a timing change and nothing more.
I run a MP vac advance distributor and a Blaster 2 coil with the Ballast resister on the Hemi.

Not sure what vacuum advance has to do with the ignition box really. There was certainly advance on that 440/6 roadrunner. No issues there. Sounds more like a tuning/cam issue.

I emailed Troy and have not heard back yet, it,s early here!
I think I can work around that anyways if it becomes an issue.

Re: revonator ignition? anyone using this? - 04/16/13 02:36 PM

When you back off the timing, you need to limit the mechanical advance so you can keep the same initial ( base) timing.
And I know Troy doesn't care for vacuum advance but it can be used if a guy takes the time to adjust everything properly. I run the Rev N Nator in my dually for towing with an MP distributor and vacuum advance . I had to adjust the Allen screw in the diaphragm .
He may be out of stock but last time I talked to Troy,he was tooling up for another production run.

Re: revonator ignition? anyone using this? - 04/17/13 01:47 AM

I talked with Troy when I was getting ready to return the unit I bought. Saying that he isn't into vacuum advance is an UNDERstatement. He went on and on about how it interferes with the digital circuitry of the Rev box.
For years I ran on the street with the vac plugged off. When I started tuning the engine to run cleaner, I went to colder plugs, smaller jets and the vacuum advance. I am more of a corners and street driving guy. The time my car spends at WOT is nothing compared to the majority of the guys here. Before any changes, I was lucky to break 10 mpg. I'm getting 13 now. Yeah, it isn't going to get me any awards from EPA, but a gain is a gain, right?
I never returned the Rev box. Screw it, I'll keep it and see if I can make it work somehow. The money spent is worth supporting a small company like this.

Re: revonator ignition? anyone using this? - 04/17/13 11:29 AM

I have read multiple posts on Vac advance and it seems as though it would be beneficial to use.
I never have used it in the past but this is my wife's 65 cornet and with the Hemi It would be great if I could squeeze a couple MPG and Smooth out the idle a bit.
It would seem that if I can get my ported vac from the carters. Right now I remove the hose from the base ported outlet and it has no vac that I can feel present. It would probably be a good idea to pick up a vac gauge for this. I'm not sure about the amount of vac I have using the zip-510 cam, I'll call Chase Night and ask him about it.
If I can get it to work great! But if not ill adjust the vac canister so it does nothing and depend on the centrifugal aspects of the MP Dizzy as it was when we dinoed it.

Re: revonator ignition? anyone using this? - 04/17/13 11:17 PM

Installed the Revanator this afternoon.
Did not have to retard the timing, car idles better and starts better.
Went out for a short ride motor ran fine.
Throttle response awesome!!
WOT awesome!!
I took her back the the Garage after she was good and hot.
Restarts fine, Idles fine.
It seems to be money very well spent.
Linginfelters is opening there collection to the public this Saturday.
They have a lot of really unique cars to check out.
We will drive the car out to Brighten about 1.5 hours and 100 or so dollars worth the fuel.

I'll post how the old Dinosaur does on the road trip.

Mine works mint . Fires up quick. Nice Strong spark when checked. Don't run vac advance and keep in mind the box has 4 degrees built into it. Rev limiter work great for my 4 speed car.....
Btw make sure you have good grounds on your car and not a hacked up wire harness. Needs at least 6volts while cranking to spark . Learned the hard way....

BB65-Where is the ground strap going from the box to the engine? Ground straps are really important for proper voltage and current flow.....

As far as vacuum advance and the so called digital interference I have to laugh at that. The maker of this products needs to stop insulting what is left of our intelligence. First it was this huge hp gain [that does not exist], now it's a mechanical device that interferes with a digital ignition box. Show me on an oscilloscope the proof!
Do you know what what one is???? They used to use them on cars...

An oscilloscope, previously called an oscillograph,[1][2] and informally known as a scope, CRO (for cathode-ray oscilloscope), or DSO (for the more modern digital storage oscilloscope), is a type of electronic test instrument that allows observation of constantly varying signal voltages, usually as a two-dimensional graph of one or more electrical potential differences using the vertical or y‑axis, plotted as a function of time (horizontal or x‑axis). Many signals can be converted to voltages and displayed this way. Signals are often periodic and repeat constantly, so that multiple samples of a signal which is actually varying with time are displayed as a steady picture. Many oscilloscopes (storage oscilloscopes) can also capture non-repeating waveforms for a specified time, and show a steady display of the captured segment.

Oscilloscopes are commonly used to observe the exact wave shape of an electrical signal. Oscilloscopes are usually calibrated so that voltage and time can be read as well as possible by the eye. This allows the measurement of peak-to-peak voltage of a waveform, the frequency of periodic signals, the time between pulses, the time taken for a signal to rise to full amplitude (rise time), and relative timing of several related signals.[3]

Note: When asked about idle to 4000 rpm dyno results we got BLANK.

I am just on pins and needles now waiting for an engineering based explanation [facts and data]how advancing the timing via a mechanical device will interfere with a distributor distributing spark...

A V8 engine using distributor with vacuum advance that has driveability issues when the adv is plugged into vacuum means the distributor is out of phase. Now some one will come one here and tell us that phasing has nothing to do with the way car runs...this has already happened in a thread previous to this...well then...my real world facts and data is pure stupid luck...

Maybe the mopar aftermarket products cheerleader will chime in and bequeath us with some knowledge.

Regardless I await a technical response from the experts.

Re: revonator ignition? anyone using this? - 04/20/13 11:01 AM

I’m currently running the older style FBO box and Mopar Performance distributer that was recurved for my combination. My question is- The distributer is set up to use vacuum advance and if I were to plug it off to run the Rev-N-Nator would the engine lose street driving manors or performance?

The only reason I am considering upgrading my ECU is for rev limiter capabilities. I have chosen not to buy another FBO unit as I could never get the original unit to work with the MSD Soft Touch Rev Control I was told was compatible.

I never ran vac advance before . And was told my the company that te box will perform better with no vacuum advance. And yes my street car picked up .3 tenths with this box alone. Pulled harder at high rpm. Noone here needs to get thier panties in a bunch

Actually Tom I do have a ground strap on the hemi, both from the battery and the firewall to the motor.

And who said anything about digital interference?
I think that someone said it interfered with the digital circuitry,
Im under the impression they meant possibly erratic changes in the timing curve from the Vac advance could interfere with the way the ignition works..

Why are you such a condescending dick?

Re: revonator ignition? anyone using this? - 04/21/13 05:06 AM

It was Troy himself that told me that the "digital circuitry" gets disturbed when vacuum advance is used. I don't understand the mechanics of it enough to take a side. I just didn't like the idea of having to retard the timing to get it to stop detonating. I already have a 14 degree spread in the centrifugal advance and I can't tighten it anymore without additional mods. Sure, if I were trying to squeeze another 2 tenths, it may be worth the effort. For a car that is used for spirited street driving 99.4% of the time, I'm not sure it is worth it. Maybe I will return mine after all.

Re: revonator ignition? anyone using this? - 04/21/13 10:47 AM

All im saying is this ignition ( with the little time I have had to play with It!)Seems to work excellent.
Im not really sure why retarding the timing would be an issue if the car runs better with it that way.
You certainly are not hurting anything. I only asked about the vac advance because I wanted to know if I sent The RT Garage $210 was I buying nothing more than a stock ignition with pretty lights on it.
The answer to that is no!
I put it on the car and the car runs much better!
Simple!
If I already did not have the 6AL on the Dart I would put one in that too.

Actually I'm using a MP distributor and a Blaster 2 coil.
Im sure your products work fine also.
