E85 and SS hose internal materilas you use? - 04/09/13 05:01 AM

I'm plumbing my new car for E85, I got in a hurry to finish the car so I reused some of the existing hose on the car, it has ben around six years since it was last raced is what I was told by the former owner. It was ran on straight methanol so I assumed () all the SS lines where TFE,Teflon, lined but it turns out one of them was neopreme lined, it leaks I replaced it with a new neopreme line that I had the fittings and hose to make it run in stock I need to order some more TFE fittings for the SS teflon lined hoses I have in stock,I will probally replace all of the SS hoses in the fuel system unless I hear that you can use the neopreme with E85 okay Are any of you using E85 using neopreme hoses with good luck or not

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory says it is ok.
Ethanol compatability

As long as it is not natural rubber lined you should be good.

When you find suitable hose, please share the brand, stock name and how you can positively identify the stuff. I have seen a lot of hose offered for sale and very little of it is the Teflon lined that is impervious to fuel of all kinds. Seems that many vendors are trying to dump their old stock.

Most hose now days has a liner in it... 2 liners are
used on a normal basis... the Teflon and Viton...
both are impervious to most chemicals and all fuels...
to spot it you can look at the end of the hose...
you will see a different color on the inner(usually
a darker color)but you will see a distinct line where
the two products are bonded... for regular fuel hose..
the injected hose it will say "EFI" on the hose..
this will have the liner...EFI hose also has a higher
burst rating... its sorta hard to find the old carb
hose now days(which was NON lined hose)

Mike, this is the hose that was leaking, it is old like me also It looks like it has two layers in it like you describe but the inner layer is the same color as the outer is , does this look like what you've seen before ? I replaced it with some newer rubber lined SS hose and it doesn't leak, yet I will end up replacing that and all the rest of the hose in the system with either aluminum hard lines and TFE lined hoses and fittings as soon as I can

Cab,

The one line you don't want to use with E-85 is aluminum line. It is supposed to corrode the aluminum.

I am planning on using hard anadised aluminum lines just ike you need to run with staright methanol

We use teflon lined SS from Aeroquip. We drain the aluminium fuel cell after every race and run some gas with top oil through the fuel system if the cars is going to sit for awhile. The issue we see is that the aluminium fittings tend to oxidize from E-85 or alcohol.

Thanks, Bob I'll have to do that also, I've already seen the E85 atack the aircraft quality thread lube I used on the fittings before finding the hose and pump leaks, no usage other than filling the sytem to check for leaks What top oil do you like Bob?

And I've just bought alu fuel lines to install for my E85 street engine.
Research papers say E85 has very little impact on aluminium, so I don't expect any problems.

Its not the E-85... its the water it absorbs... water
on alum will corrode ... even the coated alum line
due to the fact that when you bend the line you crack
the coating which exposes the alum

Marvel,STP or most any brand you can get,mix it with some gas.Menthonal and ethynol as well as some octane, oxygenated fuel gather moisture and create the oxidizing to the metals.Darryal Franks bought some 116 oxygenated fuel and left it in the car over winter at our shop,in the spring it looked like solid white crystals formed in the carb and fuel system.

for E85 you don't need to use top lube like you do with Menthonal. Also have a aluminum cell and haven't had any issues. The only time drain it is the end of the season, then I flush the system with pump gas.
