cam install.... - 04/05/13 12:32 AM

I bought a generic, whiplash cam to put in a 5.9 360 magnum but i dont have a degree wheel and also dont know how to degree a cam so my question is,should i just install it straight up(dot to dot) or should i advance it 4deg with my 9 way timing chain?also, what carb and intake do you experts recommend?motor runs good but has 98k on it,should i replace rod& main bearings when i swap cams or no?

I would degree it, that way you know exactly where it is installed just in case you have performance issues (it eliminates second guessing if it was installed correctly.) On the other hand the last two cams I installed degreed in correctly when installed straight up, but one was a stock replacement on a stock engine, the other was a Comp brand with Edelbrock timing chain.

What does the cam card call for? Not sure what you have, but the Hughes Whiplash and Comp Thumper both call for more advance than most street cams. Thayer also have that much advance ground into them. If it has five degrees advance ground into it and you advance it four more it wont be happy

There's a way to do it without a degree wheel that involves two deep 17mm sockets, a straightedge and a feeler gauge. If you are interested, I can dig out the directions.

Call your local engine builder and see if they can get
you in... takes a hour but if you can watch you can
learn how to do it next time
EDIT
If you stated where you live below your name you might
have someone close that could help you

Why are you adding a cam now if your gonna put the
engine in the dak... at least look at a couple of
bearings when you do the swap... its alot easier on
the stand

That was my plan to swap the cam as soon as i pull the motor out of the ram but wasnt sure if i should change the bearings while i was at it or not...thought i would put new timing tc&gear and oil pump .any suggestions on carb&intake?

Give us a rundown on the rest of the combination . It will help make intake and carb choice easier.
Most Magnum engines in stock vehicles go 2000,000 miles before the bearings are bad. But it cant hurt to check it over before using it for peace of mind.

Its just going to b a stock 5.9 with a whiplash cam and headers,904 trans with a 2500 stall and 391 gears.just something to play with until my real car is done.....lol. ive never messed with small blocks before.years ago i put a small cam in a 440 and after 2000 miles the the rod&main bearings started to rattle & obviously lost most oil pressure, thats why i ask if i should replace the bearings in this 360?
