Will it die?

Will it die? - 03/27/13 06:36 PM

Here's a picture of my latest experiment. The $150, rebuilt 318 I picked up at a local Napa store. If you don't remember or didn't read the post, the engine had been rebuilt by the local auto machinist and sat around until the plastic rap got ripped off. It was next to a drillpress and ended up full of shavings and dirt.
After getting it to the shop and stripping it down and cleaning and checking everything, I found that the compression measured right at 7.72-1. With no way to economically increase the compression I decided to use it to experiment with a small turbo. I'm not looking to make it into a powerhouse, just want to see if I can give it a little kick.
Last night I got the exhaust fabbed up to the turbo. Still have to fab up the wastegate plumbing and exhaust, oiling, blowoff, and modify a carb. This being my first attempt I figure the motors got a 50-50 chance of dying a violent death on the dyno.Dave

dependent upon the quality of the rebuild I would say it will live a long and happy life.

That turbo is Tiny!

I think it will live a long happy life.

So........in the layman's terms , he needs a bigger turbo ?
I agree......it should work just fine and will probably even deliver exceptional mileage along with enhanced performance.

I think the life of the motors is directly dependent on the amount of boost, amount of ignition timing, the fuel used, spark plug heat range and how hard you push that little rascal Have fun, I wish I was closer, I would love to help on that one

Detonation and running it lean are killers with turbo motors. Make sure you keep the ignition timing backed off. Personally a turbo'd motor like that I wouldn't run much more than 20 degrees timing when it is boosted.

With that little turbo - what boost you do put to it will come on like a light switch. No lag in that setup! It most likely will surprise you.

I picked the turbo because it was small, I've got 2 that came off 6V-92's sitting in the corner. The motor is a .030 over bone stock smogger 318. I'm planning on keeping with the 2bbl carb too. I'm curious about what a little boost will do to crutch the motor. If the motor lives and works out my Son my find it in his 65' Dart. Dave

when do you plan on getting it going? i'm really curious to see what it will do.

enquiring minds want to know!

If you get good at tuning it maybe a person should pick up a set of low compression forged 360 pistons and use the K1 rods with the RHS heads and M1 intake

The only thing i gathered from this is it needs to be twin turbo

Lets see what happens to the sacrificial lamb (318) first Zeb. Dustin, I know twin turbos that size would scream but I'm looking at what I'm working with. Stock jobber cast pistons, rebuilt stock heads, resized stock rods. Mickey; The wastegate and blowoff valve will be here next week. I'm waiting for some warmer weather before I crank up the dyno. It was -10 degrees here this morning. Hoping to make some pulls sometime this spring. Cab; I wish you were closer too, I could use some sage advice and help on a project like this.
I've never worked with a turbo before, this is more of a learning exercise, and hopefully I'll learn from my mistakes.Dave

I am guessing you arent running a inner cooler so just
watch your timing with the heated charge... being that
turbo is small its not going to blow it up but detonation
might do it... and I guess its just a dyno mule with
that cross over so low under the pan

Mike; 110 octane fuel is my friend , and yes it was fabbed up with the dyno in mind. If by some strange chance it survives I'll cobble something together to fit a 65 Dart chassis.
Normally whenever I dyno a motor I make the first few pulls on 110 octane to play it safe. Once I get things tuned I start backing down the octane until it tells me what it needs. I've got a distributer machine in the garage also, a nice slow, short curve should fit the bill.Dave

I can tell you with my blown motor experience it's not so much lean as too much timing. Start very low and work up. you'll be surprised how little it takes.
