Rampage - 03/24/13 06:45 PM

Well I was looking for my Rampage post but like normal
I couldnt find it with the search to update it...
but I am finishing up the body work now.. I'm down
to the last fender... I had to cut a bad part out
along the back of it and weld in a new piece... did
that yesterday and shot the first coat of primer on
it.. damn I couldnt believe there was so many little
dents and dings in that fender.. did a little hammer
work and shot another coat on today after some block
sanding... I should be done with all the body work
this week... I have a friend that offered his brand
new spray both for me to spray it in.. I will take
him up on it... once I get the body work done I WILL
have to blow out my shop.. everything has DUST on
it... I would post a pic or two but we all know what
primer looks like...LOL... I will be glad to get some
color on this thing... summer is almost here and I
want to get some miles and testing on it... DW will
come QUICK

I havent fully made up my mind but its gonna be one
of two... either Flame Red or Chryslers version of a
Candy Apple Maroon... I think I'm leaning to the Flame
Red but with a micro metallic in it... I think next
week I will shoot a couple of test panels to make up
my mind... then I'm gonna shoot some ghost flames
on it with just the metallic.. just subtle then
clear over everything... either color will have the
flames... maybe I'll shoot the test panels and get
the opinion on here which I should go with.... but
at least I'm down to two colors...LOL

Mike, I know what you mean. I'm painting my wife's brothers bike. 15 dents in the tank, fortunately only 2 needed the stud welder. I'll bet your like me. Already planning my next project. Planing only according to my wife.

Thanks... I'm glad I went with the in concrete heating
system when I built the new shop... its cheap to
run(between $30-$35 a month when at 65* in the dead
of winter) and I will make it out to the track a FEW
times this summer to fine tune this thing... I'm gonna
try to get this right at 10.90 but I expect it to
run a 10.0 to 10.1 at WOT.. I am planing on running
a mech throttle stop to get my 10.90 for DW( I cant
run quicker than a 10.80 in the class)

No white accents... I am thinking the cowl will be
a flat black with 416 on it.. and the factory type
stripes on the side... I want the cowl and the stripe
to match each other... plus I'm trying to match the
interior colors of red and black

I have a 95,000 BTU torpedo heater also. Heats my 2-1/2 car garage in no time but is noisey as heck. And of course you have to be careful using them and have some ventilation. Ron

I sorta like the red with silver idea... I have to
give that some thought and see if it matches up with

and spray the cowl silver... got to think on that

Re: Rampage - 03/25/13 08:06 PM

I was a L body Junkie back in the 80's. My dad had a Black Rampage prospector package. I had a candy red 84 charger no stripes. They I had an 84 Turismo 2.2 Black with the silver down the bottom with the tomatoe red and burgundy stripes and decals.

I am partial to the silver with the black stripe. But, think the candy red with a black stripe looked great back in the day. And would look great on yours. Then out from under the rockers down both sides a ghost flame in silver. And I mean the real ghost flame. Tape what would normally be the flame and paint the edge of the tape if you follow me.

I am a nitpicker about ghost flames. Most people call my flames ghost flames and they are not. Been looking at my car and it needs a repaint also. But, that would require a complete strip and redo. Not wanting to do that much work right now with everything else I am stepping into.

I shot a test panel today... this is on poster paper
so its a little wrinkly but it looks better in person...
this looks more orange than the real color... I
put mirco metallic in the top coat but I'm gonna
cut that down about 20%.... its called Inferno Red
Pearl coat... which is like a maroonish color
The wife really likes it... so thats most of the battle

For me its just not remembering where I put it... I
had some paint in that closet when I was building my
new shop... I thought I grabbed it all out but I missed
the 1 gal... thank GOD see remembered... otherwise
I would have had a gal of base that would have been
junk due to no top coat... but after shooting the

dont think I will put any ghost flames on it like I
was thinking with the Flame red

thats pretty boring.. I was hoping to get it all guide
coated today but about 20 minutes ago I ran out of
the 400 roll paper... I'll have a new roll in the morning

Re: Rampage - 04/26/13 06:53 PM

I can be so STUPID at times... last night I was gonna
shoot primer on a couple of spots that needed work..
well I ran out of the hardener/catalyst that I bought
with the primer.. so I got some OLD catalyst that
I had in the cabinet and mixed it up... it didnt look
right in the mixing cup but I figured what the heck..
well this morning when I started to sand it, it was
acting like it wasnt hard.. it was dry but not hard..
so I ended up sanding all that stuff off and picked
up a new Qt of catalyst and shot it again... go back
3 steps and go forward one... all I had to do was
pour it out and wait till today.... STUPID.....
and I actually had a nightmare about this last night
RANT OFF

Wow, I didn't know you were that far along on the body work. Good to hear that part is just about done. In comparison, painting is the easy part, and the most rewarding, but it can also be the most nerve racking.

Yeah... I've painted a lot of cars over the years
but this paint job has me a bit on edge for some
stupid reason... hell I painted the race car about 6
times over the years(down to bare metal each time for
weight).. but this one I'm nit pickin every little
thing on the body prep... I worked in a body shop
YEARS ago and I would never have been this picky on
this stuff back then... but I want this one perfect
just so the wife has something nice after I croak... LOL

Hey mike, looking good!

If you need a set of beater wheels and tires to roll around on let me know. At least you could keep the over spray off of you're nice stuff when you paint.

let me know!

Thanks Scott but I have covers so it shouldnt be a
problem... I just got done sanding the primer and I'm
fine now.. so I'm back to where I was yesterday and
one thin coat should finish up the primer work.. it
had me worried this morning... looks like it should be
in color next week

My brother is a engineer for the railroad and on his
run from Grand Rapids to Detroit he spotted one sitting
in a field ... I asked if he knew anyone in that area...
his buddy lives in that town and is gonna get me a
phone number for the owner... maybe he'll sell it cheap..
there are a few things I'd like to find(mostly interior)

Re: Rampage - 05/03/13 11:44 PM

All the body work is DONE and I was hoping to spray
it on Sunday or Monday but things are going a bit slower
than planned on... I've been cleaning the shop to set up
the paint booth but when I hung up all the loose parts
they are taking up more space than I figured.. so I need
to expand the booth out the door farther than figured
so its taking longer to get it all ready... looks
like Tuesday will be the day now... I got both of
my spray guns all set with new filters and tested
the pattern... one gun is for base and I use a 1.4
nozzle on the base and top coat then I use a 1.8 nozzle
for clear.... I'll be so glad to get color on this
so I can reassemble this damn thing

that far for one... I'm still checking on 1 semi local

Yeah Don as soon as I get color on it I'll post some

today I am setting up the booth and taping the car
off... I'm busy... shop is about ready so if it doesnt

Thanks guys... the engine is pretty snappy and I like
the tone of it.. this last engine seems to be running
fine... once I get some color on it I'll repost a
vid of it instead of that oil huffer ... I'm pretty
sure I need to get all 4 of my coil over springs
replaced... the rears are a bit weak and the fronts
are too stiff... but that will change once its on

LOL.... I'm still trying to some soil... it was 100%
sand and I've been adding manure and mulch for a few
years now... if it poured a hour ago it would be dry...
sand doesnt hold anything.... I bought a nice 3 point
tiller last year so that helps alot

good wet sanding... as usual I get carried away with

I got some work done today... gathered up the parts
to put the doors back together... got the drivers door
ready to hang back on the truck.. tomorrow I'll get
the other door done and should get the tailgate done..
I ordered up a belt line trim a month ago... of course
I cant get the proper ones for my junk so I ordered
up what I figured I could make work... with a little
effort and some tweaking it turned out actually better
than the stock parts... as soon as I hang the doors
I'll take a couple more pics...(sure wish I would have
cut out the crash bars... damn they are heavy.. they
have to weigh 25# each).. oh well

Actually its a ladder bar... remember I cant go faster
than 10.0 now days.... but its a 418ci with a 518 od
with a 5000 stall T/A conv with a 9" rear with 4.10
gears and a 28" ET street radial tire... pretty simple
build but it took a lot longer than I figured... just
as MoparBilly stated in his Drag Week post... this
has taken mch more time than my race car.. dont ask
me why.. I dont know.... granted when I built the
race car I was working and MAYBE I had a few more
bucks to throw at it... now I'm retired and have to
watch that a bit more.... this is a totally new car
from the ground up... and this one I had a lot more
body work to do.... so now the testing should start
within a couple of weeks... on the dyno the engine
made 550hp and 520tq... if my weights are right at
2800-2900 lbs thats more than enough to put it sub
10.0 but for DW I'll put a throttle stop on it to run
10.80s

My buddy uses it in his truck... its for A/C ducts..
got it at Home Depot... its about 1/4" thick, maybe
a touch thicker... foil over a bubble rap stuff... it
works pretty good and light ... I sat in the drive way and let
it idle for about a 1/2 hour and it was good(I was
checking the cooing system)

Its starting to feel good.... its been a LONG road
on this build... much longer than the race car.. even
longer than my old race car and I built that one when
I was younger and had a family to take care of...
but at least I'm nearing the end of this build

IF my numbers are right it should be able to run about
a 9.80 but for DW I'll slow it down for the DD class..
I'll put a mech throttle stop on it and set it up to
run a 10.80 to 10.90 for the week(being that 10.80 is
the quickest the DD can run and they subtract .1
from the weekly average for the last night dial in)

they are a neat looking ride... plus there isnt many
of them being they were only built 3 years...

pump with #8 supply and return lines with a Mallory
regulator seen in the other pic.. with a pair of #6
lines going to the 850 Holley... I was gonna run a 1050
but I didnt need more power ut I am trying to get some
decent mileage.... this pic is before I put the vent

I'm trying to get my windshield installed in the Rampage
and I stopped by a local glass shop to see when and how much
it would be... that was 2 days ago... they said $65 and they
could come to the house to do it... they said they could make
it out YESTERDAY... well I called about 1:00 to see when
they would be showing up... the guy said that someone didnt
show up yet so it might be later... I called again at 4:00
and he said the person didnt show up at all.. she was at
a funeral... OK.. so I asked, how about Friday... yep, no
problem.... well its Friday and about 1:00 I called... he said
they couldnt make it today because it rained today(which
it did)... so I asked WHEN... so now its scheduled for Monday
between 11:30 and 1:00....by the way.. this is just a install,
there isnt any glass in the hole... I did glass installs years
ago but I dont have the glue and gun anymore and would
take all of 20 minutes to do... GOD I hate getting DICKED
AROUND.... cant anyone be on time now days.......

I got my door panels in today and got 1 of the speakers
mounted in the pass door... I'll mount the other speaker
tomorrow and work on the carpet... I had to get the
speakers mounted so I can run the wires before I lay
the carpet in... I would have got the other door done
today but I had to cut the grass before it rained anymore...
it was tall already so I had to get that done.. that
takes about 4 hours to cut at boogie mode... LOL

It could be faster(my opinion) but lots of trees and
I cut maybe 2 1/2 acres... I have 8 acres here
but I dont cut the far back area... thats for the deer..
this is a 56" deck and I would like to pick up a zero

That Rampage turned out AWESOME Raff..I can remember when you 1st started on it and too see the pics of it now.. Well, ..

I would like to ask only 1 question.. Do you have a hold down/lock for the rear bed cover? The one that I had on my old Dakota would lift, at speed. And I was only running 11.7@ 115..It was a "Jason" hard cover that I cut down to fit flush to the bed sides..It was HEAVY, dual layered fiberglass..

I got the stereo all wired in along with the gauges
so thats all done... so now I will start cutting the
carpet today... I ran the engine yesterday for about
1/2 a hour... I was trying to burn out the oil that
was in the exhaust from the other engine.. thats pretty
well burnt out now... I did see that I have a coolant
leak at the lower radiator hose when its under pressure
so I need to look at that... I wasnt to thrilled with
the oil pressure when its hot.. but its still got
the oil in it from the dyno and that was on the thin side

Just a thought, I would put silver stripes and lettering on it. That would lighten up the paint. I would even paint the rear bumper silver. Black accents will make it seem even darker.

street rod... I'm planning on putting lots of miles on it

The Rampage is looking really good! Nice work!

Thanks.... I took it out today for a quick 5 mile run..
it QUICK... hard to keep it straight but it still
needs a alignment and the air pressure lowered.. I
still need to hook up the tach... I havent tried the
OD yet but it needs it..... I hit the pedal rolling
along about 50mph and it fries the tires and gets loose

My buddy stopped by and I took him for a ride...
he likes it.. being that he is a BB ford guy he was
wondering when I would shift.. LOL... its pulling
hard..
I have to get the tach in it... I'm sure I'm short
shifting... sure isnt like the race car but its pretty
decent... I changed out the oil but I see I'm gonna
have to drop the pan... 2 small oil leaks

Re: Rampage - 06/30/13 07:12 PM

I'm not happy with this engine... I'm gonna pull it
out tomorrow and put my W-2 engine in it... I just
hope my headers fit.... I took the truck out today
for about a 25 mile run.. temp held fine at 190 and
it feels good on the road but the oil pressure is too
low for me when its hot at idle and it doesnt go up
high enough when its hot.... plus it still has a little
smoke out the pipes.. the wife didnt see it when I
came down the road and passed by her but I see it...
I really like the OD... I was running along at 70
mph (GPS) and it was 2600-2700 rpm...OH well... its
coming out tomorrow

Its no big deal... at least I have time(sorta) to
freshen it up and get it in... its in the race car
now so I'll pull it out tomorrow after I do a compression
check..then put the race car back in the trailer..
I should have it on the stand tomorrow for tear down...
if the compression is what I want I wont have
to buy pistons... plus I think I want to go with a
hyd roller... this cam in the 416 is pretty noisey
for a street car... I didnt like all noise sitting
at the traffic lights... I never notice it with open
headers but sure do with muffs

Re: Rampage - 06/30/13 08:58 PM

Wait until you hear one after its been on the road for 400 miles or so. On the last day of drag week 12 mine sounded so bad when i got into town I didn't shut it off while my co pilot ran in to grab us a "made it back to tulsa" pack of beer. It sounded like a Duramax lol. The next morning it lashed fine and sounded OK. I guess there is alot of expansion after its been running all the way from Memphis @3800rpm This was a solid roller, I think I am going to lash it quite a bit tighter this year.
Posted By: Darryls-Demon

Re: Rampage - 06/30/13 09:37 PM

Mike, after you drive a solid roller on the street for awhile you will not notice the lifter noise hardly at all.
Seems like I read some were that hyd roller lifter do not work well because of the pushrod angel.

My valve train did not get any louder as the week went on.
Posted By: MR_P_BODY

Re: Rampage - 06/30/13 10:01 PM

I have this one lashed pretty tight already but is
still noisey... I guess I'm just not use to it...
but it sounds like a thrashing machine... I'll look
at what I have on this W-2... its been so long since
I had that open I dont even remember whats in it..
and I've been looking for my build up sheet and cant
find it either.. all I remember is that its a 396ci
with a 3.79 billet crank, ported W-2s.. I dont remember
the compression so I'll do a cranking pressure before
I pull it... then when its on the stand I'll measure
the heads and pistons to see what it is static..
I dont recall it being over 12.1 and I think thats with
a .024 head gasket(I remember trying to up the pressure)

Thats scary, mine was always LOUD in the evening and fine in the morning. It was really loud on the memphis to Tulsa day but that day had the most RPM for the longest periods of time, and it ran about 10-15 degrees hotter with all the traffic.

Re: Rampage - 06/30/13 11:06 PM

hate to hear that Mike, don't know how you could end up with low oil pressure unless something is bad wrong like a plug missing plug or really loose bearings or something. I have to fight to keep it low with a stock pump.

I dont know but that engine is coming out.. I'll look
at it but I'm putting in my W-2.. thats been a great
engine for years now.. the W-5 sure ran strong while
it was in there

Re: Rampage - 07/02/13 08:20 PM

I did a compression check today on the W-2 in the race
car and like I figured its a sorta low compression
set up... 160 - 170 cranking pressure... even the oil
pressure looked good during cranking.. I pulled that
engine out and its on the stand for a freshen up now...
I'll give it a once over tomorrow to see what it needs
and order parts... then I'll pull the engine in the
Rampage.. hopefully I can be back on the road in a
week or two max

LOL.... sorry for the SLOW road... I pulled one head
off the W-2 this evening... all the TD rockers look
like new.. the roller lifters are in great shape and
the pistons and cyl walls look great(on the one side)..
I'll pull the other head and the pan tomorrow.. I
measured the lift on the cam.. its .030 less than
the W-5 engine but thats fine... the pan on this one
might get cut down.. I'll see if I want to swap pans
or not... so far it looks great.. and I wont have
to buy anything.. I have a set of new rings for this
bore and I am pretty sure I have a set of bearings
Posted By: MR_P_BODY

Re: Rampage - 07/04/13 12:15 AM

I pulled the rest of the engine apart today... the
bearings look like new... the cyl walls look great...
I did find a couple of problems... I had a windage tray
on it and it had 4 or 5 good size cracks in the metal..
no biggie there.. I wont run it... next and probably
a real good thing I opened it up.. I run a KB gear
drive (and do on most of my engines) but the bolt
for the idler had come loose and the idler was wobbling
around.. was getting close to falling off.. that would
have been BAD..... then the block... I forgot that
I did a half fill on it... I dont really like to run
a filled block on the street... if I can find a 340
block in a few days I will change over... if not I
will add a oil cooler.........
So ANYONE near Detroit area have a 340 block with a
stock bore OR a GOOD 4.070 bore... or even a
replacement block... PM me.... time is getting short

Re: Rampage - 07/04/13 08:02 PM

I was looking around my stash pile out in the pole
barn... I found a stock bore TA 340 block... it has
a little rust in the bores but I hit it with a bottle
brush and took most of it out.. plus it needs to be
bored to 4.070... I think I'll have it line honed
just to make sure things are good.. I still need to
measure the deck height of the other block and this
one... so far things are looking up

Mike my turbo car has the block 1/2 filled and its been fine on the street. Oil temp has NEVER been over 200 even on long street drives.

No oil cooler, old style pre 68 water pump, e85. I have to cool the turbo with the sane oil too!

Its just a quirk of mine.. I dont like the filled
blocks on the street... by the way.. your dad PMed
me and said he has a block for me... if I wanted it

Mike don't know if you checked comp on the racecar motor yet? But I remember you talking about E-85 and saying yours was 12.xx something.
We were talking about E-85 / octane/comp ratios.
The insides of yours and mine engines are another testimony on E-85.
Good luck on your build, and the adventure that is dragweek CAR LOOKS GREAT!!

Re: Rampage - 07/05/13 04:57 PM

I just measured how far down the block filler is..
its 2.9" down at the closest point... it only varies
less than .1 throughout the whole block... I'm gonna
go ahead and use that filled block since its a well
proven block.. I'll just freshen it up... that engine
had cranking pressures between 160 and 170 max(max difference)
so its going back together... I thought the fill
was higher than that when just looking at it.. that
puts the fill about mid cyl... I'll monitor the oil
temps and if need be add a cooler... or might just
add one with a fan thats on a temp switch

I would just go ahead and put an oil cooler with a fan in. A big cooler. If you don't, and you're sitting in an hour long backup on some highway during dragweek and its 90º outside, you'll be wishing you did.

I ordered one up today.. its 13 x 15 with a fan on it..
I'll put a temp switch on it so it comes on at a set
temp.. I'll also add a temp probe in the drain plug
to monitor the oil temp

Cant believe my parts came in from Summit today...
I ordered them last night about 5 pm and they were
here at about 11 this morning... so I'm cleaning the
block and all the parts... I had a couple of spots that
the screen in the intake valley started to lift a bit
so I am gluing them back in place with JB Weld.. so
I have to wait on that to dry.. I'll pull the heads
apart to check them and put new seals on... I think
I'll pull the engine out of the Rampage tomorrow..
I want the oil pan off that engine to go on the new
one... LOL... the Rampage is 1" lower than the race
car... thought things looked close under the Rampage

Yeah I know.. but thats not why I bought it.. I got
it pretty cheap because it broke a rod and has a small
chip in the bottom of one cyl... no more than a rod
clearance notch.. but they are stronger than a stock
block so I held onto it to use some day

strong factory block = desirable race block
I'd save the "non-desirable" hardware for the car show crowd

Re: Rampage - 07/10/13 07:47 PM

Minor set back today... as I was going through the
W-2 heads I found a broken valve spring... they ship
on 7/22.... at least I found it.. surprisingly it
was a inner... I checked another set of springs to
see if I could steal the inner... nope... MUCH weaker
inner spring... I might pull a spring from the W-5
just to get it on the road.. its still too wimpy for
what I want but I can get on the road and I can change
them out when they show up.. I'll just have to take
it sorta easy till then

What was so wrong with the engine in the Rampage that you couldnt fix that just as easy/easier than what you are doing ??

You got that right... well now I know why it slowed
down the last time this engine ran.. the spring slowly
started winding up on itself... it lost .2 in 2 passes
then I told my driver.. we're done.. somethings wrong..
at least other than the spring nothing was hurt

It needs lifter bore bushings... when the oil get hot
it starts dropping pressure.. its right on the edge
of exposing the oil port... with the thicker oil it
covers it up enough

Re: Rampage - 07/13/13 04:14 AM

I ran into a first today... I was putting the oil pump
on my 396 SB thats going into the Rampage.. I put the
pump on and the pan... went to roll the crank around
and clunk and the crank stopped... so I pulled the pan
and turned the crank to see the counter weight hits
the oil pump... I had another pump so I put that one
on and it clears by .050 or so.. thats the first time
I ever had the oil pump get in the way... and that
pump was in the 416 engine and cleared fine... I
will look tomorrow to see if the rear main is just
a little shorter... or if its a casting thing on that
pump (but it cleared the 4" crank and the pump that
was in this engine cleared... oh well... it goes along
with the rest of the stuff on this car... it HATES ME

to give up...all thats taken care of now but I'm
fixing some other small things on this engine that
I should have 8 years ago.. the edges of the intake
are a little high and the valve cove JUST sealed before
so I cut that down... I'll clean up the shop tomorrow
then I should be ready to put it in on Monday...
plus I want to cut a access panel in the fender well
so I can get the starter out easier

Damn I hate porting iron heads... I now know why I
had different stuff on one of my W-2 heads... when I
bought them both they were SUPPOSE to be econo long
valves... one is the other is standard.. well now I'm
porting 1 new long valve head to match the other...
damn I hate MP and their wrong parts... yet this head
worked for 1000 passes or more the rockers on the on
the standard head with long valves the springs were
rubbing and was eating them up... I do have spare
rockers so I have to get this head ported to get it on
plus I need to cut the seats.. at least I can do
all this myself... this car HATES ME.. but I would
rather do it now and not break down on DW... this is
getting REAL OLD... this is about the 6th time I got
the wrong labeled parts from good old MP

off already and should have a bare block tomorrow to
take in for the bushings... I'll keep this cam in it
till this winter
