Let's talk small block a body headers... - 03/17/13 07:46 AM

Are the any race headers out there for this application that are multi piece slip fits....ala a 383/440 b/e body race header?? Tired of fighting the 1 3/4" one piece Hookers.

Our RHS heads are drilled for 2 bolt patterns....the one we're not using looks like W2 headers will bolt up.

Help...

Thanks in advance!

These are multi piece and go on great. I have the 1 7/8" with 3 1/2" slip fit collectors on my Dart.

I had the 1 7/8" Hedman Hustlers on my 73 340 Dart sport and loved them. Only had to cut 1 fairly small hole on each inner fender for the pipes to run through. Lots of room for the starter, shifter cable, oil filter, and no burned #5&7 plug wires. Good ground clearance too.

do you have a part # for those?

I'm pretty sure 75140 is the number for a standard port, 1 7/8 tube and 3 1/2" slip fit collector. What oil pan do you have?

Have you considered TTI 1 5/8"-1 3/4" step?
I have them on RHS/LA-X heads and they work great. The initial 1 5/8" section is not a restriction in most applications. In fact, some custom race combos start out at 1 1/2" and step up 2 more times. As you've probably read, the fit is excellent and they fit the 8 qt. Milodon pans. Most other headers don't.

Another thing to consider is that NHRA has come out with a new rule for multi-piece headers for 2014. Something about having to use an approved teather for the attached pieces. Not sure how far back in the classes that applies to off hand.

YIKES! A $200+ diff for the Hedman 1 3/4 vs. the 1 7/8. Seriously Hedman??

Myron I am consdiering TTI's, but I've heard they are a pain as well. Our 1 3/4 Hookers, hit EVERYTHING when trying to get them off. The Trans dip stick, the shock towers, the steering column. AND tubes 1,3 2 and 4 are RIGHT up against the oil pan, even after I massaged it (think ball peen) for clearance.

If we could get the TTI's on without jacking up the motor (thus having to remove the Trans shield) and trans dip stick, I'd probably go that way. I like the take apart design of the Hedmans, but the NHRA collector tether deal S U C K S !!!

If I'm reading the new rule correctly, the hedmans I have don't need the tether. The rule states: Exhaust, collectors, stacks must be securely fastened (i.e.,metal straps, bolted, welded ect) Here is a pic of my W2 1 7/8" to 2" Hedman Hustlers with a 3 1/2" collector which I believe are made exactly the same as the headers you are interested in. Notice the bolt straps on the collectors and every tube that comes apart. The only other problem I could think of is these headers don't work with an oil pan with a bottom kick out. I have a straight sided Stef's oil pan.

1 3/4 Hookers with slip on collectors will practically fall right in................

B1dartsport, my 1 7/8" Heddmans are the same as yours, they have tabs for bolts. I run a Milodon pan with mine but had to section it to clear the headers. It was a little work but my pan doesn't hang down where I'll knock it off.

How about the hooker 1 3/4" "street" header ? Uses a slip on pipe for cylinders 1 and 2, manual steering only. One piece collector. 5204's

I have 2" x 3.5" Hooker super comps, rear tube on each side goes through the inner fender.

They are a serious pain in the ...

I don't recommend them. My next set will either be hedmans, or custom.

I ran that Stef's pan before,it is not as deep as it looks in the picture. It only holds 7 qts with the filter. I run it with a 3 qt accusump. 7,500 rpm and scraped the rear bumper on the ground a couple of times and no damage.

You are right...they must be secured with a bolt, welded, etc. But as it is written, seems to me that any collector that is removeable (bolted on) will need the tether next year:

Effective Jan. 1, 2014, removable multi-piece exhaust collectors/stacks must be
securely fastened with an NHRA accepted header tether, such as Lokar’s
1400009 or 1401009 to prevent loss of collector/stacks during competition.

I Shouldn't have said S U C K S !!! I'm all for safety but it's just one more thing we have to deal with, rather than have tech guys TECH the cars. But it does effect my decision about what headers to buy. If it's going to add...say $100 to our header cost AND be one more thing to bolt on/unbolt when working on the car...Hedman's aren't looking as good as the TTI. Or as Dustin said...maybe even custom.

On a related note, our pan is the Milodon 10qt SS pan (drag link tube). No kick outs, but the routing of the Hookers (tubes 3,5,2,4) ran into both pan sides. Just looking at the Headman's though...they have to way way more user friendly than what we have now.

What to do...what to do...

Another thing to think of is everyone that I know of who has switched from the 1 7/8" TTIs to the Hedmans has picked up,some as much as 2 tenths. I think that is due to the fact that the TTIs have a 3" collector vs 3 1/2" for the Hedmans and the Hedmans are better designed as a race header. I ran the TTIs on my last combo.

Just drug up this old thread, hoping to see how big the hole is for the 75140 1 7/8 Headman race header.
Btw..to the above poster. I swapped from 3 inch to 3.5 inch collector on a 9 sec W5 car I had, saw absolutely nothing on a time slip.
