600hp Max Wedge?

600hp Max Wedge? - 02/25/13 01:59 AM

Just asking a theoretical question here.

Would it be possible to make 600hp with an engine running an original style MW crossram intake with AFB carbs and MW cast exhaust manifolds? If so, what would it take as far as the build goes? Bore, stroke, compression, cam? For the exercise, the engine would have to look stock appearing, so either cast iron MW heads or maybe 440Source heads.

Just throwing the question out there, not directed at anyone in particular. Any opinions are welcome.

The original engine in our car was a Ray Barton 493 with a Bullet 313-321-06 roller, 12-1 compression, stock max wedge heads, stock 63 crossram with 750 Eddy's that was dyno'd at Ray's (with headers) at 614 HP, 627 lb-ft of torque. It can be done with other combos. We are making about 720 hp now, but went with 440-1 heads and the 440-25 intake.

Your goal would be much eaiser if you'd run headers instead of the stock exhaust manifolds, I have no experience with them, but do know they will not flow near as well as a good set of headers, you can make the heads your cobsidering work, although neither would be my choice.

Have you'll looked lately at what a fellow out here in New York has done with stock MW exhaust manifolds running in the F.A.S.T class?

Theres a local guy here in New Milford CT running a stock appearing Max Wedge stroker. Its 500ish cubes, 440 Source SuperStealths, stock looking cross ram, and stock max wedge exhaust manifolds. He's in the neighborhood of the low 700s if I remember correctly. I will see him again soon since cruising season will be starting

His name's Ed, not sure if anyone knows him.

I may be wrong, maybe the stock exhaust can be better than I thought, are they extrude porting these?Like I said I have never ran any that have been on the track or dyno.

Yes it is possible.

In fact I think you can make the 600hp real easy and still have it very user freidly!

Mine made 805hp using all stock parts modifed. Only issues I have incountered have beed cracks in the heads. Its been together for three seasons. Motor was built by Mike at HP Motors. Will run 10.50's in the heat and 10.30's in the Fall.

But Exhaust manifolds where untouched the last project did not see much gaines in honing them so I saved $600.00

Thats impressive, Ed what kind a MPH are you turning? Wouldnt think the 60' can be real good on those tires? Are those times with full exhaust? Can you share anymore details on the engine?

Car goes between 131 and 133mph. Should be faster I am missing something just have not figured it out yet? I dont now if the short tire is holding me back? Best sixty is 1.56 but mostly around a 1.60-1.65 depending on the track.

Motor is 540ci 286 heads flow around 320. Intake was heavly modified and lots of compression 15.1. Big solid roller and full exhaust.
The whole package looks factory stock.
