Head choice for the next race only engine build - 02/21/13 12:28 AM

I have a set of 440-1C heads I just freshened up. They were cleaned up, port matched, and I had them decked .030 on the surface and .036 on the intake face. I actually won't have them home from the shop until friday. But anyways...

A friend of mine got a hold of me, aking me if I wanted a set of B1 originals, that had been sent out and ported. He said he was Indy only and knew I had built a B1 a few months back. He wants to trade even up. I will have to see what CC the heads are now though, if they had been decked. They are new.

Since I hadn't bought anything for the build yet, and I want around 850 hp more or less, I was thinking save weight, and trade for the B1's. I know what's involved on building the engine, and that isn't an issue.

Would you keep the cast 440-1's or consider another B1? They both make power, seems lighter is better to me. This is a straight up trade, done heads for done heads. I do know the issues with Higher revs and durabilty on valve train. Planning on a 528 or a 540 this time. Just to build something. I actually would be helping out a fellow racer in a way. He has left the heads in his closet for a few years now. He wants to stay with all Indy stuff.

No Brainer. The B1 is a far superior head. They will require more custom pieces like headers and pistons, but in the long run I'd much rather own the B1's than the Cast -1's

He wants to trade on the 26th, I am really leaning that way. This 511 B1 I have now feals really good and performs great.

Get the B1's in your hands, then tell your friend to see a doctor, because he probably has a brain tumor or concussion or something else wrong with him.

Trading B-1 for indy anything is a sign of sickness. S/F....Ken M

My MCH CNC ported 440-1 flowed 370 at .600 on a Super Flow 60 bench at 28 inches of water, they made 845 HP at 7000 to 7500 RPM in Klamath ,OR at 4300 elevation with a cast Indy 440-3 intake and Holley 1050 Dominator on a 526 C.I. 440 block. The headers where to small for these heads, the bottom of the header flange was right at .125 smaller in hieght than the exhaust port was, that made the motor miss a little from 5200 RPM up to the stopping of the pulls My B1 originals ported by Koffels flowed 420 CFM on thier bench, I have't built a motor for them yet but I expect 900 + HP, depending on the C.I. and application The B-1 are a step up from the Indy 440-1, Predators next

He has been trying for a bit now. MR P, so you have some 15-1 pistons that might work with this? That was a 499 RB or B block? Rod Length? You see where im heading?

I would love to sell you them BUT... they dont work
in a stock block.... they are 4.440 bore...and no
stock block can go that big... I was using a mega block
EDIT
get the heads either way.... they are far better

my next 2 engines are going to be aftermarket blocks. Was that a 4.15 stroke piston? I remember you said High reving, but cant remember the rod and stroke you planned on using

Yeah that was a 4.15 stroke with a 7.1 rod... I had
planned on reving it to 9000 to make the heads efficient..
that was a 518ci engine... I sold the block and heads
to a buddy that wanted to build a 572 and sold the
rods(GRP alum rods) to Jeepman... all I have left
are the CP gas ported pistons and rings for 4.440
bore at 15.1... I still have the Callies crank that
someone is looking to buy

Should we go to a pm, where we can swap phone numbers and talk prices agian? You wrote me once already on the pistons,on a good price and I think you said pins were with it. You had gave me a price, but might want to talk about the crank, if it doesnt go for you. Those pistons were for the 2.40 titianim intake valve right, but I believe they may work for the 2.380 valves with relief work. Is that correct? Were you going to run a 7.o58 aluminum rod? or flat out 7.100?

You will be happy with the B1 stuff, as opposed to fighting an extra 80 pounds on the front with those monster iron 440-c heads. Ask me how I know!

I just got an email this morning from him, it said he is 20 minutes away from where I will be at refreshing my annual MSHA course. So I can pick them up and make the swap. So looks like I have another set of B1 originals coming my way.

Re: Head choice for the next race only engine build - 02/28/13 03:21 AM

I made the trade. My new B1 originals are being shipped to me tomorrow. I will get a chance to cc the heads to see what I have. I am considering buying an Indy max block for the heads. I am not sure if the mega block will go out the the piston size MrP offered to me. I really have had good luck buying my parts through moparts members.

I seem to be addicted to B1 stuff now. Back in the 80's is when I first wanted to build one. I never realized the power I could of had back then. I always searched for the 63 max wedge heads to run a good number on the street racing scene.
