Guess it depends on how much you stroke it? What you want it to do?

Like they say, you only get out it what you put into it.

A 426 Hemi has basically no power compared to a 572 Hemi. A 572 flat tappet single 4 barrel makes 800 horsepower. Thats over 100 HP more than a Pro Stock Hemi made in 1970 with 2 Dominators on a tunnel ram with a roller cam. The 572 shifts at 6500 RPM's and lives forever. The old Pro Stock 426 lives a few months until the pressures of high rpm's and stiff valve train blow up.

Yes its worth it. The bigger, the better. My next one I am going to jump from my little 484 to at least a +540...604 would be nice too...

And just to dispell any myths we have a little 477 in a 3900lb street car that has run 11.13 already! Pump gas, nearly stock ride...650hp.

My Cuda with a super mild 484 has already clipped off some 6.90's in the 1/8th...

After reading some posts here and on the web, it seems like many guys were not too happy with the results. Dyno shows the extra HP, but their times do not reflect this as much as they should. It is worth it, or money better off into other parts. Whats your experience. Thanks.

If you are buying new parts, its the same money for a 4.5 stroke crank as a 3.75, pistons are the same money, along with everything else, so why not? Tim

What about the early years of de-stroking the Hemi to 366 and 396 cid? They seemed to make some pretty good HP!

First, YES IT'S WORTH IT!!! Go as big as your wallet will let you. My 89.5 octane, head limited, 605 made 852hp@5800rpm and 818ftlbs.@4800. It should live a long time and never have to see 6500rpm.
The old De-stroked Hemis made good power too but they had to rev them to the moon.Dave

Re: Stroking a Hemi .. Is it really worth it?? - 02/11/13 11:16 PM

Yes of course as has been said. I can say I was amazed at how much more low end torque my 493 has compared to my old 440 even though I do have better heads on this eng. But the low end torque is great for a street car that is not a light weight. I can kinda see where you might come from only because I have seen a few stroker cars over the years that I thought did not run as hard as they should but found out as they were built to run like they did. One guy I met had a Roadrunner with a 505 stroker wedge and only ran 11.50's at his best. I thought it should have been faster until he told me he built it to run at low rpm as a street cruiser as he did not want to run it real hard. He wanted to limit it to about 5000 rpm but run mid 11's with tons of torque and he only ran 3.23's in it. It was a nice cruiser on the highway at 70 mph and still ran his mid 11's with ease. But to many it looked like it should have been a stronger running 1/4 mile car. But the owner got what he wanted. I have never driven a Hemi stroker but I consider my 493 wedge a mild stroker by todays standards and it puts one very large smile on my face with its tons of torque. Ron

Completely streetable with stupid power. I would never build a 426 when I could have a 472 or a 484. There is just no reason to.

Hate to hijack, but do you have any more pics of your car? Engine specs? Is the car finished?

Re: Stroking a Hemi .. Is it really worth it?? - 02/12/13 06:41 PM

If you look at flow data for stock Hemi heads and then compare to B heads there really is no comparison. The Hemi has the Wedge covered by a lot! 50-60 cfm IIRC.

Back in the day the magazine tests of 440-6 cars and Hemi cars had the 440 cars with better ETs. But the Hemi heads are so much better, right? The answer is cubic inches. Comparing head flow to cubic inches ratios, the 426 should have been a 526 or something.

In other words the 426 shortblock was just too small for the heads. The NASCAR 7-liter limit made it a 426, and the main reason there were Hemis in street cars in the '60s is because of NASCAR homologation rules. Chrysler was getting tired of having its Wedge engines smoked by the latest ford and pontiac engines of the time, to say nothing of the chevy "mystery motor" with the "porcupine heads".

So, my answer is, even a stock pair of Hemi heads can benefit from a stroker crank.

If you are building a new Hemi & it dosn't have to meet any cubic inch rules why would you not go bigger? With the better materials, machining & quality control these days the rotating weights of many of these stroker combs is getting down to small block rotating weights so the big engines will rev freely, unloke the strokers from years ago.

Let's say you built a 572 with 800 HP as above, that would be around 1.4 HP per cube, apply that to your 426 & you get 600 HP, I think the guy with 200 extra HP will drive right past you.

I have been for a ride in a 4000 lb '72 Roadrunner street/show car that has a 605 Indy Hemi that has 900 HP, 850 ft/lbs & the guy drove it 2000 miles return trip to get to my end of the country, he red lines it at 6,700, he has a ball & has done for years.

There is no replacement for displacement!

What's it weigh and run? At 3,300 lbs it should run high 7's or so...

If the OP wants to turn up the revs he can make pretty
damn close if not equal to the bigger engines... he
might have to turn 10K to what others are turning
6500... a PS is 500" and turns 10k+ and makes 1350 hp
so it all depends what he wants to do AND what kind
of price tag
And to the OP... its not always the engines fault
a car is slow.... the chassis is a major factor
