What cams are you using in your 440/505 engines? - 01/30/13 02:49 AM

just wondering about what cams people are using in their 505 stroker engines. Just looking for an idea. I know my application makes a big difference, but just looking to see what people use.

Well in my 493 I am using a solid flat tappet that I got from Dwayne Porter. He speced the cam for me and ground the cam also. I do alot of street driving so I decided not to go roller. My cam is 264 & 270 at .050 and lift is like .588 and .592 only I use 1.6 rockers for .628 and .632. It has a 110 LSA and I have it on a 106 centerline. Ron

There just 2 cams that we have run the most use ,, is a Racer Brown STX 21,, and STX 22 Both use a 105 c/l
STX-21 304 266 .560(1.5 rockers) .590(1.6 rockers)
STX-22 310 276 .590 .629
We have used a 112 c/l on a stx 22, but no hp gain over the 105 c/l cam
we have them in use with eddie rpm and sets of Victors Jr with a max CNC port job,
We have had ets in the 9,50 zone with a 474 with out of the box RPM heads and the STX 21 3200 car.
As for my car it weighs in at 2900 with a driver has a 437 (383 w a 440 crank) eddie RPMs out of the box, STX 21 With no tune up to speak have run 10.48 with a 1.42 60ft
I still have a chassie to dial in,and a motor to tune on , I am sure that 10-0s is not out of the question for a low hp , low buck motor!!

What compreesion, what usage, which heads and inatek and carbs.,what RPM do you want and so on Awfully hard to make a decent suggestion without knowing the intended use and parts it needs to work with

Hyper henry used this flat tappet in the 512 worked real good but he sold the 512 to tame down a bit while he concentrates on his daughters baseball.

I found this for him a 3:00 am one night when pondering a cam for his 512 and remembering some cam suggestions I had read about by Herb McCandless think Herb was high on a .650/.650 for race 440's and I found this and the .650
think it is this one then found above and liked the numbers

If your up for buying and using a solid roller cam and lifters I have a Comp Cams custom grind solid roller that works real well It is 260 @.050 with .420 lobe lift on the intake lobes and 266@.050 with .409 exhaust lobe lift on the exhaust lobes. PM if you want the lobe numbers, they where BB Chevy lobes originally I used a set of Harland Sharp 1.65 ratio rockers originally on my Eddy RPM heads and now use a set of T&D 1.65 ratio on my Indy SR, the motor is a 518 C.I. pump gas motor that pulls like gang buster to 7800 RPM if I let it I try to shift it at or close to 7000 RPM My car will slow down a tiny bit in the 1/8 mile if I short shift it between 5800 and 6500 RPM in 1st and 2nd gear Big motors needs big air to make the most of the combination, your little tires will be the biggest challenge to make work, in my opinion You might like the same size in a bias slick or bias race street tire like the M/T ET Streets instead of the M/T ET Street Radials

I wouldn't mind a roller cam, but I think its a little to costly for me. I guess I'd have to look into it.

What do you guys think of this:

I run crower 650 lift solid lifter , great cam but you better have a stick or a real high stall as it doesn't smooth out till 5,000 RPM"S

These are the stock EZ-1 head, I think they are rated to .600 lift? does anyone know for sure?
I'd like to run over a .600, like the one above without changing spings etc.

Re: What cams are you using in your 440/505 engines? - 01/31/13 12:32 AM

That cam has 286 duration @ 50. It will kill some of your bottom end, Sound awesome and run really strong thru 7800 to 8000 grand. I think your set up would respond better with a 266 - 274 @ 50 cam. What do your SR heads flow above 600 lift?
My cousin has a similar 67 car to yours except he has a 4.56 gear and runs 29.5 X 10.50 drag slicks. He just replaced a bigger cam with a Bullet Roller cam I had that has 266 @ 50 w/ 110 lobe seperation installed at 108 and it has 670 lift. His old cam was a 286 @ 50 cam. His car is quicker and faster with the smaller cam. He has an old set of Zeeker heads that flow really well in the mid range up to 700 lift. He has a 5000 stall converter (I think).

If the springs are only rated to .600 lift then running something bigger isn't going to be a good idea .

Stop being cheap Mike , spend it because you can't take it with you ...

Sorry Mike, I thought you were running the SR heads. I would not run the springs that come with the EZ heads on anything at or over 600 lift. You are going to float the valves and break stuff. ASK me how I know. My son broke engine parts twice, before I got smart and replaced the springs. Yep I am a slow learner. LOL
