Question about installation of transmission cooler/fan - 01/29/13 11:56 PM

Hi!

Im installing a B&M transmission cooler that comess with a PULLER fan.

Its way easier for me to install it in front of the engine water radiator with the fan facing towards the front of the vehicle.

However, this would mean the fan would be pulling the air through the transmission cooler....when the car is at speed it will be pulling the air against the flow of air coming in thru the grille. Is this a concern? Will it make the fan work harder and it might fail? Or it should not really matter?

puller fans work the best. u want the blades facing the grill. if ur blades face the rad, it will pull through the cooler & have air pressure hitting it from the front. not good.

uh....I dont get it....



This is how I have it installed. Like I said, its a PULLER fan.

Would you say its installed right?

Can you hook the wires up backwards and have the fan run the opposite way? I put my cooler like that on the bottom of the spare tire recess. Takes a little more line but I had an intercooler in front of the radiator. Can you space it out from the radiator any more?

cooler you have to get a PUSHER fan... you DONT want
it fighting the incoming air

Thats what I was saying.....I guess if I fab some brackets and flip it I should be fine....right?

Instructions say not to flip the wires, since its designed to work like a puller fan, not a pusher. I wonder why they advice against it...is it because it will put extra strain on the electric motor, or is it because it wont move the same amount of air?

if u have the room, can u mount ur cooler facing the grill? that way it will pull air & be away from the rad.

If you look at the trailing edge of the blade you
will see its not cut like the leading edge so thats
the difference and it will cavate much easier

OK I see...thanks for the info.

Ill flip it tomorrow....its like I wanted to install from the beginning but I was too lazy....now I have to do it all over again....lazy guys work twice they say!!!

Domingo, if you're going to mount it in front of the radiator, it seems unnecessary to mount a fan on the cooler, since it will be hit by plenty of unobstructed air.
Another spot to mount it is ahead of the driver's side front tire. That's how I mounted my B&M cooler in my old Duster.

Literally all fans are pusher/puller.
Most are sold in the puller configuration.
You flip the fan blade, reverse the wires, and you have a pusher...

i tried to flip the blade and because of its design its not possible.

I tried to flip the whole cooler/fan assembly and it wont fit.

Dave, it will probably fit there on my car, but I'd rather have it higher up in front....besides, the cooler iunstructions advice against mounting it flat.

So the question is: will I damage the electric motor by reversing polarity, or is it designed to work in either direction???

If it wont hurt the electric motor, I guess I dont care if the fan wont move as much air, since it will be mounted up front and will get plenty of incoming air by just driving.

Ill also call B&M and see if the offer the blades by themsleves and I will get the proper blade.

i called B&M

They said reversing the polarity wont harm the electric motor.

They said the the probelm is that the blade is designed at an angle to maximize air flow....so if I operate it as a puller fan it will move lets say, 700 cfm, If I reverse it it will probably move 400 cfm.

So Ill just reverse polarity and be done with it. Since its mounted in the front of the vehicle it will get fresh forced air all the time, so If the cfm its down some its OK.

I would want to use a thermostaic switch in the trans cooler lines or in the tranny somewhere so the fan would only come on at or above 170 F Most tranny don't run hot to start with, that is the reason the factory routes the tranny fluids into the radiator, it helps warm the fluids up ATF needs to be at or above 160 F for the additives to work My old 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 CTD tranny fluids ran at or below 120 F when not towing a big enclosed trailer, that was in the Mojave desert in the summer, it ran colder in the fall, winter and spring It did have the trailer towing package with a small external tranny cooler mounted in front of the radiator, no fan My Dusters tranny fluid will warm up to around 180 F in the summer when cruising round, it has a T/A 8 inch race converter that flashes to 5600 RPM, it has a small three row external tranny cooler mounted in front of the radiator also

Yep Cab! Mt B&M cooler has a thermo switch of 170°

I bought it because I felt it was the nicest setup with a fan, the switch and a big sized cooler. inda spendy at $229 though.
