Considering Switching To Alky...

Considering Switching To Alky... - 01/21/13 12:48 AM

I am seriously considering switching to Alky sometime here in the not so distant future, and I am looking for input from those who race with a carbureted Alky Setup. Do you like it? What all is involved in the swap? As far as I know, all I will need to do is buy an Alky carb, new bigger fuel line for the feed line, larger capacity fuel pump and regulator, and as far as I know that should be about it, is there anything that I am missing? Also, I have read differing opinions on the amount of maintenance required, and I was wondering how much is truly involved? Will I have to run a special oil, or will I be able to run the same oil (shell Rotella, changed every 30 runs)? I'm just getting tired of buying $100.00 worth of race gas for a two day race, only to have a problem getting the car cool for the late rounds of a bracket race, when they have us practically hot lapping. Sorry for the book, I'm just trying to see what I'm getting into.

I know I ran cooler, but I just swapped back over to leaded race fuel. The fumes bothered me too much. I used a magnafuel fuel pump, #10 an to the front and 8an return. I ran VR1 50 wt oil. I set my pump at 9psi with a fuel log and bypass valve. It idled at 3psi, then went to 9 at wot. I have a ross built 9375 dominator for a carb.

The combo worked very good and the engine never ran hot even with a 1 inch 1 row radiator 19x22. I filtered my fuel while filling the cell. 3.5 gallons. I never really had an issue, except, you have to get the engine warmed up
or you may milk your fuel. A vacuum system will help.

Figure two gallons a pass roughly, which also includes fuel used for warm ups. I use Klotz fuel lube, don't have any issues with my injection setup. I never drain the system, or do anything special other than keep it sealed off from outside air when possible. The most important thing is to fully warm the motor. I warm mine to 210 or so, which heat soaks everything including the tranny. I launch at 185 to 190. A lean out of some sort is mandatory for decent warm up, and saves a lot of fuel. The heat also clears the oil if you get some milking. If you get some milking, you have a very rich idle, or are running it too cool at some point. To help with fumes, do what you can to direct exhaust out from under the car. The consistency and ease of going later rounds is a big advantage of alky. You often will be working to get heat into the motor to leave the line warm enough. Run plug gaps a bit tighter, and two less degrees timing than gas. I run my plug gaps at .032 to .027, and haven't seen any difference between the two.

Have you considered E85 and is it availble in your area? I think that may be a very good option instead of straight Methanol

E85- needs 1.4 times as much fuel as gas. Methanol- needs 2.2 times a much fuel as gas.
If you built a good fuel system with plenty of capacity, then a change to E85 is dirt simple. You still get some cooling benefits, plus the fuel is fairly cheap. Buy it by the barrel after testing for percent ethanol. Best time is in the summer. Some Co Ops sell E98 in barrels as well. Some people report that the ethanol content can very, so testing is important.

I switched about 3 years ago. In my opinion, a vacuum pump is needed to protect the oil. I do run the carb bowls dry as I run an electric pump and let the carb run out of fuel at the end of every raceday. That is about it for maintenance for me. I did remove the foam from my plastic cell. At less than $3 a gallon and a wide tuning window, I wish I would have switched earlier. I run a mallory 250 pump, -10 line to pump, -8 to carb and -6 return. engine is a 572 in a dragster.

Re: Considering Switching To Alky... - 01/21/13 07:26 PM

I thought about e-85, but my fuel system was not put together by me, I've only got a old holley blue pump and regulator, and only -8 line from front to back, and I figure if I'm going to have to upgrade all of that, I might as well go all the way to methanol. I like the idea of nothing but a carb change, but it doesn't look like it will be that simple.

Greg covered it pretty well. My 2-cents:
  • keep it sealed off from outside air when possible
  • cap the vents between race days
  • Use a lube in the alky
  • Get the engine HOT (200) at the end of the race day, shut down and pull the breathers for a little while
  • The carb idle calibration is very important, some are too rich; check it

You will need a fuel filter compatible with alky, typically a stainless steel mesh screen type.

I love it (Ron's Flying Toilet injection). I have run both E85 and methanol (alky). Right now alky can be really cheap, I pay $150/barrel = $2.73/gallon. You will use close to double the fuel per day compared to gasoline.

Everywhere I ask, everyone says get a Rons toilet setup, I have never heard one negative about them. I don't know much about injection, so that's why I hadn't really considered it, how easy is it to tune and get running right for a rookie like me??

For me methanol works great. It's deadly consistant. There are some good ideas above. I use a Pro Systems SV-1 and thier special regulator. I really like it.I also use a lean out valve to help build heat. Methanol and E-95 can be hard to start if the temp is below about 40*.I've sprayed carb cleaner through the lean out to help cold weather starting.I also like to spray fogging oil in the lean out valve after a race to keep corrison down on the cyl walls.Vacuum pump and warm engine temps also help.I like to use a gapless top ring to help keep the oil a bit cleaner. You might also search alky, alcohol or methanol here,dragraceresults.com and yellowbullet.com. There is lots of helpful info around.Good Luck!

Order and work with the guys at www.killerrons.com. They are factory backed, and are the best customer service rather than calling/ordering from www.ronsfuel.com

Check out the web site, they have lots of good FAQ. And when you are ready to order, they will get the tune close when you order from them.

I have not used my set up as of yet still putting the car together.. but I will say this I email killerrons and got a lot of help from them guys and have not even spent 1 penny with them.. I got all the part #'s for the set up (used) and sent to them 1 night and got a email back the same night with a # to call if I need any more help...so I must agree with jim and say call them they are in my book...

Re: Considering Switching To Alky... - 01/23/13 02:30 AM

You originally asked about an alky carb setup, so I wasn't trying to convince you to go injection. But I honestly think it is the right way to go. But there is nothing wrong with a good complete alky carb fuel system.

Check the total cost and the "kit" cost of a Ron's injection system isn't as high as it might initially look. Their kits include the fuel pump ($350-450), fuel filter($100), pump drive/installation brackets ($225), extra tuning pills (jets), etc. etc. So when you add it all up, it isn't much more than a good, complete alky carb fuel system setup.

If you want simple, go with a carb.
If you want the best, go with injection.

I ran my injection without a primer system for a couple years. But after spending a little more for the Ron's "Primer Plus" I highly recommend spending the money. It makes cold weather starting easier, warms up better (running on gasoline), and just starts better even between round (IMO).

Anyone know of a carb shop that is good with alky carbs? Jim.

Re: Considering Switching To Alky... - 01/24/13 02:23 AM

I run alky injection and will never run anything else after running it. My maintenance is the same as before. I run a star vacuum pump and the oil stays crystal clear. I also run rons toilets. Only my pump and injectors are from them and everything else is enderle. If you do decide to run injection instead of a carb I agree with the others, have it setup by someone in the know.

IMO, if you go alky, don't waste your time and money on a carburator.

Alky needs to be injected.

there is a nice c&s 1100 alky carb on RJ for good price, i just bought a SV1 alky w/their regulator and Magna 500 pump for my 572

Re: Considering Switching To Alky... - 01/24/13 03:00 PM

Alcohol is the only way to go if you Bracket Race,a carb. is limited in tuning,an injection system such as Ron's has a unlimted tuning range. You can put as much or as little fuel as you want in the engine with it,and the throttle response is much better.

PS Did not mean for this to be anti-carb. there is nothing wrong with a alcohol carb. just prefer the injectors myself!

Re: Considering Switching To Alky... - 01/24/13 03:21 PM

My
I run 2 C&S 800 aerosol carbs with a Magnafuel 500 feeding them from 10 gallon cell.

Switched from 2 850 anular Demons a BG 400 and C16 beginning of 09 and won't ever go back !!!!!

Re: Considering Switching To Alky... - 01/24/13 04:45 PM

alcohol carbs are a nice transition. they are an easy way to get used to alcohol. BLP( Bo Laws) is tremendous C&S are also quite good, i have used others ....but injection is killer. if you go that route call james monroe at killerrons he'll set you up. nobody better!

And this is the pump/drive mounting while still on the engine stand. The small gilmer belt drives the pump, the 5" regular pulley drives my alternator.
