Why do my rocker adjusters seem wrong ?

Why do my rocker adjusters seem wrong ? - 01/06/13 12:38 AM

Just put the Econo W2 heads back on the 408 stroker and proceded to measure my new pushrods for the cam change.I went from a hyd flat tappit to a solid flat tappit ,so i knew they would have to be longer..I made a pushrod length checker from one for a Chevy that i cut off and welded the top part of my old cup pushrod on.When i screw the adjuster out to the 1 1/2 - 2 threads hanging out of the bottom , i dont have much more than a full nut on the top .Is the lock nut to thick or is it just suppose to be like this with Harland Sharp rockers ?I have tons of clearence between the pushrod cup and rocker ,head and everywhere else on the base circle ,full lift ,and everywhere in between. The contact with the roller tip and the valve stems looks great also ...

You can see the adjuster with the correct threads and how there is nothing more than a full nut on the top side of the rocker. The cam calls for .028 lash hot on both sides ,so i set the lash at .025 (its cold out) with the pushrod and not the adjuster on the rockers .Sorry the pic is not very good ,but you can see it if you look on the 3rd one back on the pass side ...

How about a better pic of what you're on about?

I read you think the locknut doesn't have enough thread-engagement now?
If that's the case I think you might need longer adjusters.

My Harland sharps were the same, so I went a click longer with the push rod, I think it was .050

Would it hurt to leave them with just a nut of threads up top ?My cam is only .507 lift ,so there is not much drastic binding going on .Not arguing ,im just asking ...

No sir, there is two threads hangin out of the bottom of the rocker and there is a full nut of thread contact on the top with the adjuster nut.The thing is i have had people that saw this setup before tell me that the adjuster were screwed out of the rockers too far ,when i screw them out to show two threads .Here is pic of what im talking about. This was before i tour it down for the cam swap and head work.I measured it for the new pushrods today and its the same thing this time around.A longer adjuster would just get more hanging out of the jam nut on the top im thinking..

The HS nuts are kinda tall compared to some others so it will work fine

Are the adjusters in your H.S. rockers 3/4x24 or 7/16 diameter x20 threads? If 3/8 go ahead and order your pushrods another .065 longer, that will raise the adjuster about a turn and a eigthth(1/8),(.0625) still leaves a half turn of the thread under the rocker When it comes to the adjusters shorter under the rocker arm is better, as long as the pushrod cup is not close to touching or rubbing on the rocker arms

The threads through the adjuster nut will fine, no problem , more thread through the nut will not help or hinder . What you did was you had to much thread out at the ball end when you measured for the push rod, 1 1/2 threads would have been the most you should have had with 1 the least when measured with the proper lash.

I can't help it, every time I see the pushrod/lifter angle on the small block I think Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
Is there a GOOD explanation for this?

As a former Chevy and Ford guy myself (this being the first Mopar i have been into) i wandered the same exact thing. With all the importance that is put on getting the contact of the rocker tip and valve stems "dead on " to prevent side load on the guides ,how can the geometry beteen the pushrod and the lifter like this be cosher ?It seems like the side load on the lifter in its bore would be high in a SBM ...
