6bt Cummins in an abody? - 12/27/12 06:39 PM

Just found a nice running early 12v for a steal, What are your thoughts on a cummins fitment in an abody? Will it weigh more than a iron headed BB? Need a lift pump to the IP? Just throwing this out for discussion...

LOL... that engine weights about 900-1000 lbs... better
get some new T-bars.... but if its in good shape and
its a steal its worth picking it up(at least it is
to me)

Usually run around 1100 lb.

Buy the engine, put it in something that can use it, or sell it to a board member.

Here's the way to estimate how much it weighs: Imagine a 318-powered A-body with another 318 minus manifolds bolted on the hood.

I've thought about this too but I think the 4BT would be a better fit.

I think all the weight would counteract any kind of weight transfer and you are going to have a ton of torque around 1000 rpm to attempt to hook.

I could be wrong, but I think the radiator would have to mount where the front bumper would normally go to fit that monster in there.

I don’t get it, if you want to go cheap. Put a SBC in there!

I feel sorry for the ball joints in there

Also they are very tall and would require a 6 pack scoop stretched from the front of the hood to the cowl just to cover it all up. Plus to get the crank center-line correct you would have to shrink the oil pan or it will drag the ground or raise the trans tunnel from front to back a few inches or maybe a combination of both.

The biggest problem I would have. The #6 rod is right beside your right knee. I've seen the whole they make when they come out of the block. Not pretty.

I don't see any problems or drawbacks with the swap. You are planning on using it in the 2 wheel drive 'sled pulls' aren't you? Front weight is needed.

When you say "sbc", you DO mean Small Block Chrysler, don't you?

No, it's pretty well known how cheap a small block Chevy combo is!!!

Put it in the back seat of a 68 Cuda & call it "Cummins under Glass"

You could buy my ProStreet '78 D100 and throw it in there. It fits, and I know it does. I thought about doing it a few times...THe 6-speed trans will help keep weight down a little.

Do what you what, I had a friend that had one laying around, along with a mudtang put them together and and ran them, now that being said it ran like poop for a year before he got it figured out and made some steam, I think when it was all said and done when he sold it, it was running 9.00s ? I think I have some video's some where...

Move the fire wall back a foot or so then replace the front shocks with a 4/4 so it won't sag and use those 28 inch rims so the oil pan don't hit. That should get you started, oh yea forgot the wheel barrow full of money.

We race with dodge trucks that have spent over 30k on mods for that engine, They are not even close to competive in the mud... but they sound mean

I was just looking at a magazine at the book store that had a late 60s Caddy with a Cummins 6bt. Also, search Youtube for the early 70s Monte Carlo with a 24 valve CTD. Sure, it's not going to work in an A-body, but I don't see why it couldn't be done in an Imperial or a 71-74 Charger. You would think that the Monte Carlo and the Charger have similarly sized engine compartments.

Re: 6bt Cummins in an abody? - 12/29/12 04:27 AM

A 6 bt is a 3' cube for a idea of size. They are 3' from edge of turbo to edge of pump. 3' from front of engine pully to bellhousing flange and 3' from top of valve cover to bottom of oil pan. I though about cramming one into my barracuda. I had a 95 standard cab 4x4 that ran mid 12s at 6800 lbs. drop 3200 lbs and it would be fun..

There are a couple 70 or 71 Monte Carlos in St. Louis with turbo diesels in them.

Its the last frontier IMO. The diesel drags are still attainable for entrepreneurial people .I am trying to convince my cousin to go halfers on a max effort car to destroy the class now .
