Mini Tubbing

Hello all and Merry Christmas!

How many hours to mini tub a 71 E body and those of you who paid to have it done how much did it cost? Wanting to move the wheel well over to the fame rail edge not necessarily into the frame rail. Could I get a 335 in their once this mod is done?

Did mine myself and was my 1st time so it took a while but was a learning experience and will do better next time. Not sure on cost to pay someone though..........

Including cleaning the under coating off and head scratching , I had close to 40 hours into mine I bet.
But it turned out pretty O.K. I think.
These are right to the rail , and in an early A body a 295-55 X 15 fit with ease.

U can get bigger than that on a e body with a stock tub.Just find a 65 b body rear or narrow yours and keep the stock tub.

I do have the B body rear already in their. Don't think I could get a 335 tire in there even with a 6" BS wheel. Have not tried it yet. Was researching and seem to find that a 315 is the largest that will fit in the stock tub. Anyone know for certain? I would really like to hear successful fit info.

Talked to Andy McCoy Race cars today and he thought it might take 2 days to put them in and another couple to re bondo, repaint and reapply undercoating for a fully finished job. He charges 75 an hour and works 10 hour days. This sound about right?

I've put in regular full tubs in both( steel tubs in a kit ) in a early(1963 plymouth Belevere) B body and a later 1968 Cuda A body, that has to be easier than adding on and adapting to the existing tubs. I would want to move the leaf springs in before doing the tubs or do both together so I could get the biggest tire in the car possible

$1500 sounds high (if it takes him two 10 hour days at $75 hr) and it just moving the wheel wells in.

I think I can get it done for a lot less, but I will have to call "my guy" and see. He is about 2-1/2 hours from St. Louis.

I do know on an E-body, to install a spring re-locator kit to move the springs inboard for maximum tire clearance (15.5x29x15 tires on 12" rims) the frame needs to be trimmed and re-welded. I will see about getting you a price for "just" moving the wheel housing.

If you want I can also find out the cost for a true mini tubbing which includes spring re-locator and frame notching.

I can finish a mini tub in a weekend if I start friday night. I usually get $1000-$1500 to mini tub and do frame connectors depending on how well I know the person. Done a hand full now and have another coming as soon as I have room for it. When I'm done you can't tell it was ever cut into.

I did Dizusters(find pics here). Started Friday night and finishing Sunday afternoon. That's no paint but they were metal finished similar to the ones in the above pictures. We moved the springs into the rails as well. I've also tubbed two cars. A 63 Polara and a 64 Belvedere. The body lines on the Dodge were easy. The Plymouth with the body line, not near as easy to fit them.

Yes I will be moving the springs inboard. I should of said that. Not sure about the frame notching? Andy mentioned that but was not sure why? Please educate me.

I that case, the front frame rail has to be cut and modified for a new spring box, the rear section of frame rail needs to be notched. New rear spring perch mount needs to be installed (too mount them parallel). And usually a new solid front spring bushing is installed along with new shackles and bushings.

So now you are getting back up into the $1500 range.

The rear frame rails on a E-Body are not straight. They splay outward (get farther apart) toward the trunk area. So to get the maximum width for the wheel well, you have to notch the frame rail in the back about 1" and weld a new plate in to re-gain the frame rail strength.
