Thinking About Getting a Tunnel Ram for My 440

Thinking About Getting a Tunnel Ram for My 440 - 12/14/12 01:30 AM

My car is built pretty much like something out of a 1970s Direct Connection catalog as it is anyway, so I'm thinking about putting a Weiand tunnel ram and a pair of Holley 600 1850s on it to make it even more old school.

Current combo is an iron-headed 440 with a Performer RPM, 850 DP, 9.5 Dynamic, 3.91s with a best of 7.96 at 85.6, 1.71 60 foot. I'm thinking a tunnel ram should be good for maybe another couple tenths off in the 1/8?

Way back in the 80s a friend used to run 440 with a tunnel ram, 590 DC cam in a '67 Belvedere street car and I remember it used to cruise fine on the street and was good for mid 12s on regular old L60-15 street tires.

I'm at the point where I'm running out of little things to do to go faster and this seems like a pretty good bang-for-the-buck if I can pick up the intake used. What do you guys think?

I have never ran a tunnel ram so I dont know much about them other then when I see dyno test and they use a tunnel ram it always seems to make the most hp. Heck I would go for it as it will definetly look cool and I would think it will go faster. Good luck , Ron

Wicked throttle response, massive torque. GO FOR IT!

Like was said amazing throttle response. More torque, more HP, looks cooler.
I run a weiand and 2 holley 660 center squirters. I'll never go back to a single carb.

They make torque, that's for sure...

I'm gathering the parts now with two 750's
Just linkage and another main body, I'm good to go

Oh if your looking for a pair of 1850's drop me a line

Re: Thinking About Getting a Tunnel Ram for My 440 - 12/14/12 04:28 AM

My old combo was similar to yours except mine is a 451 (400. I ran 906 heads and had the Weiand TR/1850 combo, it would go 10.90's, we moved to the Mopar 590 cam and traded out the 1850's for a pair of center squirters, we went a best of 10.75 at 3300 lbs. With that combo in my car, it liked rpms. The more I would spin it the faster it would go. I'm not sure I would want to spin a stock rod/piston 440 to 6600 on a regular basis, I was probably living on borrowed time even doing it with the lighter 451/400 combo. So If I was you would I do it, ABSOLUTELY, but it make it work good you will likely need more converter.

They definitely add the cool factor, I have always loved tunnel rams.

I ran the M1 tunnel ram on a 9 sec 451" street car, I loved it but it drank the fuel cell faster than I could afford to fill it.

It will make more torque and hp everywhere. The only way I'd give mine up is if I went to a blower. On the dyno my motor made 31hp more the very first pull with a tunnelram over a single plane and dominator. I'd made 15-20 pulls tuning the dominator till it was as good as it was going to get.Dave

Well, I loved the tunnel ram in my Fury and it definetly makes a statement when your driving into the cruise-ins. I swapped my TR motor for a single 4bbl mostly to make the car more of a driver, not because of the intake but the overall build of the engine. I will be using the TR motor in another car as soon as possible.

That intake is supposed to be THE one as the runners are as close to perfect for length for the rpm range most 440's run in. It was never offered with a 2X4 top tho so you would have to build your own.

You see them for sale usually in the $500 range so yes a little spendy for a used intake.

get one they are lots of fun and for some reason tunnelramed engines tend to answer your right pedal in a way single carbed engines rarely ever do.

I LOVE my tunnel ram. Run it with twin 1050s. Car runs really hard and pulls all the way. It top ends like a beast. Oodles of torque. So - put one on and don't look back you'll be glad you did.

Anybody got a Indy tunnel ram laying around gathering dust for a RB MW port?? You know, cheap???

Re: Thinking About Getting a Tunnel Ram for My 440 - 12/15/12 06:06 PM

Almost as easy to find a standard port tunnel ram, do a heliarc aluminum build-up above the ports and port it to Max-Wedge size yourself.

That would depend on the combo. I ran two 750's on my 9 second 451" Eddy headed motor.

Re: Thinking About Getting a Tunnel Ram for My 440 - 12/15/12 10:28 PM

i ran one a long time ago. old weind with two 650 body dubble pumpers.
was a 906 head engine solid cam no compression and it went hands down the best with it. take it off and less throttle responce and less 60ft and less mph. i thought it reved like a dump truck engine with a single after that.
someday i will have the new M1 ram on same carbs. the dominator does respond real crisp. some day.......

I forgot how much faster you went with the tunnel ram ? But didn't you end up taking it back off ? Ron

Re: Thinking About Getting a Tunnel Ram for My 440 - 12/15/12 11:22 PM

I only removed it cuz I didn't care too much for the Eddy carbs, I just wasn't good at tuning them. I put it back on when I bought the 2 tunnel ram 750's from Quickfuel. The car ran in the 10.05 area with the single dominator, with a best of 9.95 in real good air.
With the tunnel ram it was consistently in the 9.90's even on hot days, with a best of 9.88. The new owner has gone 9.77 with it.

Everything was better with the TR, streetability, starting the car, 60 foot, ET and MPH.
Only downfall was guzzling fuel too fast and having to change all those jets but really didn't need too once dialed in.

Thanks for the info. So it seems the car was a good tenth faster with the tunnel ram setup and drove good. I really liked how well that combo ran. Ron

Re: Thinking About Getting a Tunnel Ram for My 440 - 12/16/12 12:13 AM

In late 1980's I put a tunnel ram kit on my 67
barracuda. It was from summit racing, Weiand
tunnel ram with two 450 cfm Holley carbs. The
engine was only a 340 with a Lunati Bracket Master
hyd cam .480 lift 234 dur. but it ran great on the
street and turned 12.20s at Cedar Falls Raceway
down in Iowa.

When I switched from the single Indy intake and 1050 to the Indy TR and twin 1050s - my car picked up .25 and 6 mph in the 1/4. My bullet is relatively new - I've only put a handful of passes on it and then we were sorting out shock and 4 link settings. The car went 9.41 @ 143. It repeated that number at a race, but on 9.60 index - so the advice to try and slow it down was to short shift it - engine builder said to shift it 7400, so the thought was shift to 2nd right after the launch and the hit 3rd at 6400 - car went 9.31 @ 148.899. Oops. Then I've had it parked for the past 3 years going through some personal stuff - once I bring it back out it will be fun to mess with and see what she'll really run.

Re: Thinking About Getting a Tunnel Ram for My 440 - 12/18/12 05:41 AM

I agree with Prosport, the tunnel ram has been great. Alot of torque and very consistent. We footbrake the car and launch at 2500 rpms and go 1.34-1.35 60 ft all day long on a well prepped track. Bob, John now has a best of 9.76. This car runs so well we don't even mess with the jets. We just dial it up or down a little based upon the weather predictor.

I have been running a tunnel ram on the street for years on my 440ci and now my 505ci.
As stated above they do drink fuel more than a single four. At the track the tunnel ram with 2 750’s was 2 tenths faster than the single four.
