Most embarrasing moments at the track.... - 12/12/12 11:42 PM

I have had so many its kinda hard to pick just one, but i will anyhow..

Few years ago i was at the IHRA Northern Nationals at US131, was a huge event back then, 10 years ago. At that time my car was running 10.50 ish. Had w5 heads, and a dinky flat tappet cam in it then, and stock gas tank with 3/8 pickup and Holley Blue pump.

Over the weekend we got three time trials, car was running good, and i was ready for action when they called us up for 1st round right after the night of fire show.
I come around the corner to a full house and am amped up. I look over and see i have an 11.50 Firebird in the first round. Have raced the guy 3 or 4 other times and he has always gotten the best of me....but tonight i am gonna get him

We stage, and i take off after him, feeling like i had a good light( i did, 509 to his 540 something)
I am reeling him him, put the car in high gear...and splat..it dies out on me as i see him driving off in the distance
Let off, get back in it, picks up, stumbles again, so i just coast out
For the first and only time ever, i showed up to the starting line with about 3/8 of a tank of gas and stupid me the pickup uncovered.
I immediately the next week put a cell in the car, but the damage was done.

Doug, the guy i was racing, came over to my pits and says" Hey, what happened, i thought you had me"...Me..."Doug, I ran out of friggin gas"

68 firebird..think it had a 383 stroker in it.
He used to work on the counter at Lane Automotive. Big parts house around here, kinda like a mini Summit.
If it had a big block it would have run mid 10's...lol

First Round .. Division One Bracket Finals back in the 80s at Maple Grove, I pulled into the burnout box.. then was backed out as something happened down track. When they started us back up I left the e brake on and the car would`t move much, Rather than put it back in park I put it in neutral and put the e brake on. I heard about that for awhile. If you race long enough you acquire quite a few " embarrassing moments".

During the burnout the fuel gauge starts to flutter and dive..... should have filled the fuel cell..

Re: Most embarrasing moments at the track.... - 12/13/12 03:42 AM

2nd weekend after I built my car... pulled to
the line and put the boot to the fast pedal and as soon
as it launched the throttle cable broke... get back
to the pits and fix it(enough to get through the day)
and head back up the the lanes.. sitting in the burnout
box they have a short hold on the track so I shut
down... couple minutes later we get the fire them
up sign.. do a short burnout and pull to the line
and the light starts.. I hit the pedal again.. as
soon as the car moves.. it quit... forgot to turn
the pump on... 2 times in 1 day it didnt make it off
the line... the starter said... why dont you come
back when you get it fixed up... then as they were
getting ready to push me off I remembered the pump..
fired up and ran it down the track..... and loaded
it up.. I was too embarrassed to try again

For me, Good Guys at Indy. Set up to run Doug Duell. BSing in somebody's trailer, missed the round. For my opponent, finals at NMCA in Memphis. I leave the line and one carb linkage stud breaks off on my cross ram linkage. My car misses the index by 1.8 seconds, my opponent breaks out. He had me by 20 cars.

Didn't happen to me but we were watching some guys on a test & tune knight and an older gentleman rolled up in his new mustang and rolled streight through the water box to the beams which he blew through and had to be backed up and staged. He got both bulbs lit and started power breaking it. As soon as both cars were staged the lights dropped and he was out of shape right away, Never lifted even when he backed it in the wall. I felt bad for him.

Gee, let's see...

Running out of gas on the return road and causing a back up.

Forgetting the hood pins after tech. Man those 6 bbl scoops catch alot of air!

Leaving the foam in the scoop for a run.

Going. 002 to a. 150-something light. Being so excited I was going to my first final not paying attention...11.41 on a 11.43 dial.

Going -001 red and going 10.430 on a 10.43 dial.

Forgetting to put the shifter in park and watching your call roll backwards off the trailer after getting out.

I race a K-car... and I have another unfinished K-car race car...

First points race snapped a ball off the carb linkage on the launch, idled down the track.

First license pass took most of the teeth off the 8 3/4 ring gear, idled down the track.

Finally started started going rounds after a convertor swap. First time shot the next week I break an axle in the 8 3/4, idled down the track.

Have you ever thought of dialing your car based on what it runs idling down the track? Your have a good log book of passes to compare it to....

Me too.... or how about make the first run and then coming back to the pits, the car dies. So I get out and pull the hood, no fuel, turn the pump on get some pressure so I set the hood back on and jump in fire it up and try to make it back, oh crap I forgot the hood pins as the hood lifts and flips over the top of the car about 20ft in the air. I felt really really dumb.... Oh and I forgot to put gas in it, thats why it wouldn't run....

I've done that last on your list too.
Back in the 80's I got to final. We both stage. I'm waiting on the tree to come down. At some point the thought goes through my mind I'm late. So I just left. I got the big red eye. What a DA I was.

Ran out of gas on the starting line ....... other guy goes -.001

I broke the beam, got pushed off the starting line, borrowed some gas for the final and won the race!

.00X to his .300, lift way early and coast out the back, go .001 under taking a train length.

Best I've seen was a 69rr 6pak hood go about 100 ft in the air. To accomplish that I think the angle of the car has to be just right, to keep it in place till after the 330 mark

Re: Most embarrasing moments at the track.... - 12/13/12 06:26 PM

It was the first outing for my 'Cuda after a winter long updating process. New fuel system, new wiring, new tin work. I had to go through everything to update it. The night before the track rental we thrashed on it ALL night at my buddies house. We finally fired it at about 4:30 am. Car ran like crap. We messed with it for a while to find some Alum chips in the carb. I left for work that morning from the garage still in the same work clothes from the day before. My buddie says he was going to pull the carb, clean it up & trailer the car to track for me. I worked till 9:00 that morning and ment him at Norwalk for the track rental. Car is now running great. I pull up to the starting line for the first pass after the burn out, it back fires & dies. The next thing is see is flames rolling out of the Hemi scoop about 12" tall. I cranked it over hoping the flames would go out, nothing. The next thing I see is my buddy spraying the flames out through the hood scoop. We push it off the track and pull the hood off. The freshly detailed engine compartment, new carb. & everything now has a nice white blanket covering everything just like a fresh coat of snow on a brisk winter morning. I looked at my buddy & told him "Bleep this, I am going to sleep" A few hours he wakes me in the trailer & asks "Are you going to race this pile of bleep or do I have to?" I then made 3 passes back to back all 11.30's. They were with in a few thousands of each other.

Moral of the storey, DO NOT BLOW NEW FUEL LINES OUT WITH AIR. The shavings will just stick into the rubber and the fuel will wash them out. Flush the system with fuel before firing the car. Also a track clean up at a rental is not cheap coming out of your pocket.

Well lets see. I have traveled 1100 miles and forgot to turn the air bottle on...Or this one, when we had the Belvedere it had a stock gas tank. Left the fuel cap off once and got chased down by the firetruck all the way through the shut down area and return road. nothing exctiting thats about it for me.

1993 Mopar Nationals in Indy. Drove the car to the track, had a partial bucket of water in the truck to clean with. Didn't remove the bucket before going up for time trials. After the launch, water was pouring out of the trunk extension drain plugs. A photography place was taking photos of all the race cars in action. I now have a huge photo of the car with water pouring onto the track.

Re: Most embarrasing moments at the track.... - 12/13/12 07:56 PM

Went to hit 4th, which should be a quick and easy straight back pull on the shifter, but after a night of beating on it, my shifter handle and adapter piece I made to fit the B-body pistol grip into the Dakota, had come a tad loose, so the handle was sliding on the shifter some.

Instead of 4th, I put it in 2nd, at about 75mph. skidded the tires a good 20-30 feet, RPM through the roof. coasted out the back end. down the return road, and straight for the gate. (it was getting late anyway, and the track was getting slick)

Re: Most embarrasing moments at the track.... - 12/13/12 08:03 PM

At a little track in Lawrenceburg, Tn (old U.S.43) about 1985, I do a burn out across the start line (OK to do at this short track), back up and stage carefully. The starter taps on the window and motions me to back up. Thats when I realized that I had staged with the back tires. I had a red helment on and my face matched it for a while.

Just about as bad, maybe worse, 2010 at Bristol, I started running two classes, 1/8 mile Pro and 1/4 mile Sportsman, same car/same day. First day I did this, I went to the finals in both classes (won 1/4 mile, red light away 1/8 mile). The next week I'm rollin' along through the rounds again and about rd 4 of the 1/4 mile race, I draw someone thats way quicker than me (me 10.90, him 9.90). Up until now all of my 1/4 mile races have been against slower or equal cars (everything either beside me or in front of me). I get near the 1/8 mile mark and look back, this guy is WAY behind and ain't gonna get there. I start whomp, whomp, whomp and my win light doesn't come on, then he BLOWS by me and his win light doesn't come either. At least for about 3 seconds, THEN his light comes on. I'm like, What the ???. All of a sudden, I realize what I did. The butt chewing I got that day didn't come anywhere close to the one I got about 3 weeks later, when I did it again. The 80 mile trip home that day seemed more like 180 miles.

At least I've never ran out of fuel on the track. Yet.

First time going to the track, a couple good friends (you know who you are, lol)and I decided to tune the car the night before. We disassembled the carb for cleaning and put it back together. Car wouldn't idle and barely ran. Got to the track the next morning and discovered that we forgot to put the jets back in.

Yep, the gas deal. I am headed to the staging lanes to tech. My son says "we better put in some gas we don"t have enough to make a full pass" and I said " " I'm just going to tech and right back" got stuck in the lanes and had to make the pass. I remembered his words just as I crossed the traps as I coasted to the return road. I had to call him to bring the gas,I told him he was wrong that I did make it to the traps. He still gives me the razz about that. He drove the car back to the pits, made me walk. I told his mother,no help there !!! Fun times.

Re: Most embarrasing moments at the track.... - 12/14/12 01:46 AM

I have had a ton. The bigget one that sticks out in my mine was a specific weekend. I was racing the cuda. I had a gorgeous gf at the time. one night we were "gettin it" in the trailer. first pass next day my whole one piece front end flew off at the shut down. Mind you this had nothing to do with her I told her where to put her hands but earlier in the year a front engine dragster backed into the nose weakening the structure. apparently body guy never fixed that. but back to my epic weekend of fail. I decided to race it without a front end and scoop so I borrowed a friends 340 air cleaner. make a hit and its fine. well rd 1 im doing my burnout and my starting line controller rotated just enough to catch the air cleaned coming out of the burnout box and hangs it wide open. I use the toe hook and im on the brakes but by this time there was a kid sweeping the starting line in front of me. of course i hit him and he goes up on the front of the car. the only thing stopping him was the air filter stud!!! oh and in the process of hitting him I also took out Mark Lyle which is now the NHRA starter. he tried pushing the kid out of the way and my passenger side tire got him. I like to forget about that weekend except the night before!

Back in the early 80's I was changing the engine one night, thrashing to get it together so I could race the next day. I mounted but forgot to bolt down the grill of my 67' GTX. Made a few passes until it fell off at the starting line. I felt like a total tool and went home.

Re: Most embarrasing moments at the track.... - 12/14/12 04:30 AM

Back in the early 90's, I used to run my 69 Charger with a 440 at Carlsbad raceway.
Last time I went with the old engine, it was really running great...launched like always, shifted into second and BOOM!
I was in such shock that I just coasted allllll the way to the end of the track. Got out, and recieved a huge a$$ chewing by the guy on the tow quad.
I was like, WTF dude...then I saw my 1/4 mile trail of Coolant!! Ohhhhhh $hit...my bad. I must have looked really sick, because after he reamed me, he looked at my car, and said "now next time you blow your $hit up, pull over and stop...and I'm sorry about your loss".
I was so stunned, even after he towed me back, and almost everyone in the pits helped to push the car back on the trailer I remember telling my dad the jerk that towed me back just chewed my butt left and right and I was really mad at him for being so inconsiderate because I just lost my prized possession!
Then my Dad told me that the whole time I was in the pits the track was shut down because of my neglegance to pull over and stop.
As I looked around in the pits, I could see lost of glaring eyes looking my way...so we left promptly!
Was really embarrasing for me, and I'm sure for my Dad...love you dad!! Ha ha

First time down the track with my car, forgot to latch the trunk. It comes up fast when you hit the brakes hard.

Then next time at the track, I decide to remove the air cleaner, hoping to go quicker. What I forgot was the gasket under the air cleaner. Burn out sucks the gasket into carb, and jams in the throttle blades. 3500+ rpm idle, shut it down and got pushed out, DUH!

Suprised I stuck with it after those two first outings

I did that on my Dakota, doing testing to see if my air cleaner was creating any restriction in my intake path (used a datalogger to record Manifold pressure with Throttle Position. figured if my air filter was creating a restriction, my MAPs would indicate a vacuum in the manifold.

anyway, on the testing with the air cleaner off, I forgot the gasket as well! only I was on the street!

during the WOT runs out in the sticks, nothing went wrong. when did the gasket suck into the TB blades? yea, in town. with traffic. At least I hadn't gone WOT in town, and it only jammed at about 3/8 throttle, so I quickly stepped on the clutch, let the RPM climb, and it was also "idling" at about 3600 rpm. pulled over, shut it off, popped the hood and saw what happened.

Ah, I've posted this before on this forum. I don't drag race, I truck pull a 4x4 truck. I hooked to the sled one night and left the line, thought it was odd the shift light came on, but it was running great. I spun out at the big end with the shift light on. The crowd looked a little puzzled and was told that only the back tires spun.......I forgot to shift it into 4wd.....I was disgusted, I can't remember if I got 2nd or 3rd place. I would have won if I was in 4wd.......

I was there that day. My wife and I were in the pits when that happened and Connie Kalitta came rushing toward us to see what happened. Connie kinda has funny eyes and as he was rushing toward us he sucked up a big hocker and was about to spit it out. His eyes were looking one direction and he spit in the other direction almost spitting on the ex wife.

Re: Most embarrasing moments at the track.... - 12/16/12 04:49 AM

When you have raced for 35+ years there are lots of these embarrassing moments so I'll go with my last one that happened this year in the box class. I was on a roll hitting the tree pretty good all night and made it to the final. The other driver asked if I wanted to split the money in the final with an extra 50 dollars going to the winner. I didn't really want to but finally agreed. Rule number one when using a box. REMOVE all numbers from the round before. In the semi's I raced a car 2 seconds slower than me and in the final I had a car 1 second faster. He got one heck of a head start and needless to say took the win. I still made out pretty good but he was standing in the winners circle with the trophy.

My best happened when I was about 19....my car is a 4-speed and I didn't have a rev limiter so I bought a Mallory tach with built in rev limiter (had a knob you twist to set the rpm at which it cuts out the motor)...I installed it and drove it on the street for a few weeks and one day as I'm cruising down the highway I look at the tach and it's reading double what it should be ....after about 1 mile it goes back to reading normal and doesn't act up again....

So, about a month later I decide to take my car to the track and run it for the first time with my fairly new 438" 383....On my first pass I stage, bring the motor up to about 3K, dump the clutch and it goes about 5 feet and the engine starts cutting out and the whole car starts shaking like crazy!!! Rearview mirror is bouncing around....glovebox opens...I look at the tach and it shows 6K but I know the motor isn't that high....I remember that day when it read double and so I reach up and crank the knob all the way to the right to raise the rpm limit so it'll stop cutting out and I finish the run with a mid 13 second pass....

Imagine being WOT with a stick car, clutch pedal out and against the chip at 3,000rpm....I was freaked out!!!!!

When I got home I pulled the tach off the car and threw it in the trash and haven't had a tach in a car ever since....

about 10 years ago, i had just got my 383 barracuda running. took it to the track a few times to tune out the bugs. Finally got my slicks, had been running street tires. Get them mounted and get to the track enter the water box and get in it. Car revs to the moon but does not move. I start playing with my shifter, nothing. I get it in reverse and back out of the box. I take it back to the pits thinking i had destroyed my trans... My friends come over and ask what happened. I told them it just free revved, and i think my trans is messed up.
My buddy said my tires sure were spinning a lot for my tranny to be bad. first time i had a set of slicks in the water, they sure are slippery. LOL, no trans issues just driver issues.

One day (several years ago) I raced my way into the semifinals and was nervous as hell. For some reason I was concerned my water temp was a little high and that I need to cool the engine down just a little. The decision was made to run the electric fan until the burn out was complete. Pulled up to the starting line and lit the 1st bulb, reached over to shut off the fan but shut off the electric fuel pump instead. I learned that day that my car could Launch and pull through 1st gear with just the fuel in the carb.

I was directly behind a guy as he pulled into the burn out box and i know the car is low 11 sec car, i remember thinking "man his head is small" he forgot to put his helmet on, doh! The starter points at his own head. It seems to take him ten mins to figure it out. He fumbled around putting it on the entire starting line staring at him.

Don't feel bad. I ran out of gas...twice...when racing my
bro in his Charger at MATS. BUT, I still won. He red lighted.

That is more like a epic fail weekend..wow

Was anyone hurt bad?!

Several years back my son & I and and a few other mud racers decided to run up to a mud race track we were never at before, After many years of running flat tracks 8 to 12 inches deep I kinda took it for granted that some other folks like it a bit deeper, I was the first one to run for the day and when pulling up to stage the fella asked me to pull a cable with me and drop it @ the finish line if I made it out.... Well I kinda laughed inside and said Na.. I wont need it... So as we always do I rolled up 30 feet to pack a track <standard opperating procidure in a flat track> and sank my truck to the hood and had no way of getting back out It took an hour and a very large excavator to dig me out, It did not go over so well with the local crowd, they consumed a lot of beer in that hour and kept yelling ... let the retarded fella try again.... It just wasn't my best showing

made the show on pinks all out. I was nervous as hell the TV cameras were rolling. I Did my burn out and totally forgot my routine. I normally do the burnout roll into the first light. Shift to neutral clean it out and stage. This time I went straight to the light waited for the other guy and staged. When I launched the car made a terrible sound as I realized I was in 3rd gear with a 200 shot on a full throttle switch. Needless to say that tranny came out. Rich and Ken got a chuckle out of it though..

A number of years ago when I got back into racing the car had not seen the track for twenty years, most of those the car set outside. The first run was a wheels up run down the track and was uneventful , engine ran perfect, trans shifted OK and even the brakes worked. Noticed as I was coming back on the return road that no cars were coming down the track, the starting line crew was sweeping up all the rust that fell off when I dumped the clutch.

I had just bought my Dak RT I just sold so summer 04. Local track and I'm as green as the grass. All these 9/10sec rides are going around the burnout box and backing into it. Seems like the right thing to do right? SO, I follow suit like a big shot, smokes billowing, hit OD and lift of the break....still in reverse. Good thing we don't have a wall behind the track...just a good 40 FT to the staging lanes. So thankful no one was behind me waiting to stage. When I staged, my boss who still runs the tree, kindly told me to roll up my windows. Both of them.

Fast forward to summer 09, fresh 347/4speed in my friends 79 cobra. 10.80s NA fast. Sometimes i drive but hes a better stick wrangler. Launches hard like always, hits second and my buddy idles back to the pits. WTF? He was pissed as he didn't even take his slip. So I follow back to the trailer and he gets out of the car and pitches his shifter handle about 50 ft....we had threw the new clutch in the night before, had a case of CANADIAN beer and one of us just put the shifter bolts on finger tight. After a few passes, they had rattled loose and off came the handle.
