Any way of telling cast, from chrome & from moly rings?

If you have some rings with no box, how can you tell if they are cast, chrome or moly rings???

The wear edge of a cast ring will be dark in color as same as the rest of the ring,a moly ring will be dark grey in color and the wear edge will be a bright silver.A moly filled ring will dark with a silver wear edge.Most all chrome rings will be a chrome appearence.

I compared this one to a set of new moly rings I had and it looks similar....dark ring and the wear edge is silver in color, however since this engine was assembled (though never run) the silver has darkened a bit.

Would you say its moly?

The silver or lighter one looks to be moly filled(topring),the dark one with the yellow paint visiable is cast(2nd ring).

great! Now I will hone my cyls with 400 grit stone for the moly rings.
