426 Hemi Head ?

426 Hemi Head ? - 12/02/12 03:11 AM

Now that I've started collecting some of the larger parts for the motor, I'm not sure which cylinder head would work best with my combo. I'm building a 604ci Hemi, KBRE aluminum street hemi block, Callies magnum XL 4.750 stroke crank, Oliver Billet Rods. I'm thinking 12-12.5 comp I don't have pistons yet just because I don't now which head I'm going to run. I have an opportunity to buy a set of Stage 5 Millenium heads drilled for a 16 bolt intake. I now alot of guys are going to say what a waste of a cylinder head, but i can get them for a good price and there brand new with intake spacers and exhaust flanges. I still would like to hear everyones opinion on which head to run. Oh ya i think I'm going to stick with a single 4 intake.
Thanks for any and all info

Big C.I. motors need big heads, intake, carbs, cams and exhaust I would do the deal and not look back or think about it

I check the price of rocker gear, if its comparable I would go for it. Tim

Well as far as I now the shafts and rockers are the same and the rocker stands are different. Can a guy run T&D or Jesel rockers with these heads?

I spoke with the guy that has the heads and he's going to give me a price for heads, intake spacers, exhaust flanges and moroso aluminum fab valve covers. I'll keep you guys posted.

The Millennium head is one of the best heads you can get. But they also require unique rocker stands so I hope that's part of the deal. The chamber is 155 CC. What made the Millennium head work so well was the raised intake ports with no intention of matching up with a normal 426 HEMI manifold. It was assumed the head would be a 5 bolt intake and a custom intake manifold, so the intake ports can really be opened up. With the 16 bolt version the intake bolts limit how far you can port the runners. You end up with about the same intake runner volume as any other good head.

Still, with a little good port work you can get the 16 bolt version up to about 475 CFM. I have used that head on 572' and 603" HEMIs with really good results. If the price is right I wouldn't hesitate.

If you use Stage-V rocker arms, the exhaust pushrod will hit the head and the block, so be prepared to mock it up and do some grinding, but that's par for the course with a big HEMI.

Finally I hope the block is a raised cam. With that large of stroke the big end will come very close to the cam. Make sure the rod journals are BB Chevy size (2.2), and stay with steel rods. The big end of an aluminum rod would hit for sure.

Hey Rich,
I ordered the block with raised cam location and no I didn't get the rocker stands with them. I thought I remembered you saying Modern Cylinder Head has a program for this head with a 16 bolt intake.

With a 2.2 big end a steel rod will clear on a standard cam block. You have to make sure the cam is degreed in though otherwise I can contact.Dave

Yes, Jeff has a CNC program for those heads. Make sure he does the spacers at the same time.
