TOWING WITH 2012 2500 RAM HEMI 4 X 4 QUESTIONS?? - 11/25/12 03:13 AM

I would like to know if anyone has bought a new 2012 Ram 2500 4 X 4 with the standard HEMI engine and used it for towing? I would like to know what kind of gas milage you get while towing? Also no trailer or towing gas milage? What kind of weight for the car and trailer being towed? The local dealer says many improvements in the Hemi engine and new 6 speed automatic are more favorable for towing?? If this topic has already been discussed please provide me a link.
Thanks! John

i've only towed once with my 2012 1500 2wd,but i can tell you in hilly country it isn't going to get mpg for squat.i had it on tow/haul,lots of down and up shifting, finally just put it in 5th and was much better.and i'm not talking very big hills.this was hauling my 3100lb 63 on open 20ft car hauler.

I've got a 2010 2500 HEMI with 3.73 gears. Bone Stock 15.60 in the 1/4

It gets:
10-12 around town
17 empty @70mph
12 towing my open trailer and Dart @70mph with a bed full of crap.

Good truck, plenty of power but most of it is up higher rpm's, so its going to downshift. Towing to one track we climb through several mountain passes, It likes to climb those hills about 4K rpm in 3rd gear to maintain 70mph up the grade.

No complaints. Yes I wish I had a diesel, for the simple fact you could throw anything bhind it and not think twice. But for me, and the driving I do, financially it doesn't make sense. You've got to put a ton of miles on one or tow big heavy loads to ever see the return.

Tell the dealer you want to hook a trailer to it for the test drive

This is almost exactly what my 05 1500 4x4 Hemi with 3.92's gets. 12 in town, 16-17 unloaded on the freeway, 11-12 with either a 3000# enclosed or 4000# open trailer.

Thanks for all the replies guys! Triple Threat your information is exactly what I'm looking for! I hope that someone with a 2012 has this type of information. The reason is that auto trans is now a 6 speed! The 2012 HEMI is also up to 383 horsepower and 400 ft lbs of torque! This doesn't compare to a diesel but the the price of that option along with maintenance costs and fuel prices doesn't make sense for a truck only used 2,000 to 3,000 miles a year to tow a racecar!
Thanks! John

My 2010 is has the same engine 383hp, 400tq. It still has the older 545RFE which is a 5 speed, with 6 gears (there are two different 2nd gears, one for up shifting, one for down/passing.

I heard rumors of an 8 speed for 2013?

Re: TOWING WITH 2012 2500 RAM HEMI 4 X 4 QUESTIONS?? - 11/25/12 11:19 PM

I have a 2011 Hemi with 4.10's,5 speed auto, regular cab. I pull a 26' enclosed trailer with all the junk. I figure the trailer loaded weights around 9000lbs. I haven't been in the hills yet pulling but I am getting about 8mpg. Normal driving around town, 12mpg. I drove it on a 300mile round trip empty and averaged 16mpg. I also can't justify a diesel for the limited usage of the truck. Just want to add the truck does every thing I want it to do and I love it!

I rented this exact truck a few weeks ago to pick up a car.

2012 Crew Cab, 2500, Hemi 4x4 with factory tow package.

Towing an 18' open trailer (empty) the truck got about 16mpg according to the trip computer.

Towing it with a car on the back, mileage dropped to about 12-13mpg

This was over a 600 mile round trip on relatively level ground.

There is lots of power, IMHO the truck struggles a bit in 6th gear at less than 67mph with a loaded trailer. Either drop a gear, or drive faster - both improved the mileage.

But overall, a nice combo to tow with.

The 8 speed is just in the half tons with the V6 if I remember correctly.

The 5.7 HEMI will get the 8 speed auto trans later in the model year.
