Re: Montessa Photo - 11/18/12 05:56 PM
Thanks guys! I have owned the Charger since 1974 and am the third owner. It had 68k on it when I bought it and has 78k on it now. It is an orginal RT 440 4 speed car. I picked it up from a buddy of mine for $1200. I was only 21 at he time and had to get a loan from the bank, $50 a month payment for three years and she was all mine! Does't sound like much now but, when I was making $1.95 an hour and going to school it was enough. Started Drag racing it in 1988 and have slowly progressed to where I am now! You all should know that the first day at the track I met a guy that has been the number one reason for the machine that you see today, Dwayne Porter! I have not made an improvement without his input. He will tell you what works and does't work, take it to the bank! Best times are 9.08 at 147MPH with a best of 1.25 at 60ft. not bad for 3700lbs!
Looks awesome Jim !
Those ET/MPH numbers are very impressive
Finally got mine into the high 10's but traction is now a problem...

Re: Montessa Photo - 11/18/12 10:44 PM
There is a little bit left in the comb, 572 with 440-1 345s. Dwayne has a cam in mind that will carry the power a little higher but, will loose a little torque ( now 810). The car hooks up most of the time however, I have been bitten a couple of times during eliminations, so a little loss in torque might help the consistancy. Also considering changing my 750's for a pair of Dominators. Not really big gains left but maybe enough to bump the 8's all motor! The last milestone for Montessa!

Re: Montessa Photo - 11/19/12 12:42 AM
Dwayne Porter, owner, operator and engine guru of Porter Racing Heads from Burlington, Vermont built the motor. It dynoed at 910HP and 810TQ. World aluminum block, Indy tunnel ram with 2 750's.

whose converter are you using? And what size and stall?
What does the car normally run in regular air?
You ET numbers are outstanding coming from 440-1 Indy heads.

I am running a 9in ATI Fuel and blown converter, stalls at 5600 rpm's. I have a Dana 60 with 4.10's in the rear. In the heat it will 20's.

Re: Montessa Photo - 11/19/12 11:37 PM
The heads are not hand ported. They are 345 CNC ported 440-1's. As far as the flow numbers I think guys get to caught up in the numbers game. It is the sum of all the parts in the combination. As I stated earlier in the post Dwayne Porter is the man that is responsible for my rides performance. He is the answer guy! If you would like to see some videos of the Charger go to utube and look under Jim trombly at Napierville and Jim's 1968 Dodge Charger. I am afraid that I am not very computer savy so I don't know how to transfer the videos to this site. As it was, I had to ask my daughter to load this post photo!

Re: Montessa Photo - 11/20/12 02:20 AM
Thank you Vern for your help. That first vid was my third run with the new motor and the first one of that weekend. I had put more timing in it and wasn't sure what the thing was going to. I though that the thing was going on the bumper so, when I lifted I wasn't quick enough with the gas pedal and wacked the oil pan! Done for the day. Pan cracked next to the drag link tube. O well, all part of the drag race program.

All I can say is WOW!!!!! Your Charger is absolutely beautiful and BAD A$$! And to have owned it all those years that is great. Mine is not nearly as fast as yours, but it has a big thing in common with yours...Original 440-4speed also owned since '86.
I would love to see more of your car. Please post some more pics...I can't wait.
Thanks,
Greg.

And track champion too.
Complete package.
How many 9.08 ET's has it gone in it's life?
I see a bunch of 9.30 & 9.40 too.
Are you sure that car weighs 3700 pounds?

Re: Montessa Photo - 11/20/12 11:06 PM
The 30's and 40's were from last year when I was running basically the same setup except at 528 cubes and a little under 12 to 1 compression. For this past season I changed out the crank, rods and pistons and stepped up 14 to 1 compression. The best the old combo ran was 9.26 at 145, new best 9.08 at 147 for the additional 44 cubes and 2 points of compression.

That's about a 40hp gain...

Why didnt you go with the 572-13 cnc 385 heads?
I bet you would be well into the 1000 plus horsepower range with your combo. You seem to really have a handle with making it all work.congratz.

3700kg = 8140lbs I'm sure Jim meant 3700lbs
I've seen the car and it's all there, full interior, cage etc... But it does have a nice lightweight aluminum block.
The car is wicked fast ; Jim and I ran against each other and it was all over at the 60' mark....all I saw was tail lights all the way down the track.

So what was the weight bias front to rear and left to right? Just curious as a black 68 Charger has ALWAYS been my dream car.

What you shifting that bad boy at?
Posted By: montessa
Re: Montessa Photo - 11/22/12 01:37 AM
The balance is 51% on the front and 49% on the rear wheels. I didn't op for the 572 heads because we felt that with the weight of the car the 440-1's would pull better on the bottom end. Also, with the exception of custom made, there aren't any readily available headers. I am running TTI 2"x 2 1/8" step headers. I shift at 6600 and run out the back about 7200 RPM's.

Re: Montessa Photo - 11/26/12 12:13 AM
Gandhi, I am not very savy with loading photos. My daughter has loaded everything so far. I thought that I figured it out but, NOOOO! Sorry. I'll keep trying. Say, did you have any luck borrowing a tunnel ram? Have you dynoed the motor yet and what are you building? When Dwayne dynoed my motor he tried a 1050 with an Indy single plane manifold. I was not there, and I know the manifold was not the best Indy single plane. I think the tunnel ram was worth 30-40 HP and torque was about the same. If you what the hard numbers you can give Dwayne Porter, Porter Racing heads a call at 802-951=1955. He is also an Indy dealer!

Yes it made power but I know I'm leaving alot on the table. I want to try a tunnelram on the motor and hoping to see gains comparable to yours hopefully. I will be going over to jim kids dyno here in Michigan soon once I get my tunnelram manifold and Iam going to try 2 different cams.Good luck next year with your beautiful car and fantastic combo.Moe

Hard Core B keeps bugging me to try a tunnel ram. We have similar results 1.29/9.12/147, 9.2x in the heat. You make better power as I'm lighter (3345). Mine runs an Indy X ram with Eddys. Often wondered how much the tunnel ram would pick it up?
