Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno

Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/12/12 05:10 AM

Reached a long awaited milestone in my Hemi build this week. After collecting parts and slowly progressing through the build for the past year and a half, the engine finally found its way to the dyno cell last week. I had hoped to run the engine in 2012, but the schedule did not work out. I am now targeting 2013 to have engine and car at Drag Week.

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/12/12 05:15 AM

The engine is a normally aspirated 588 and is designed for extended street use. Valve lift is under .690, cranking compression is 160#. Dyno headers are 2 1/8" Super Comps. All testing was done with pump gas from the local Speedway gas station.

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/12/12 05:21 AM

More compression, cam, headers, and a different intake would probably improve the power, but I wanted reliability and a lower scoop profile for the street.

Nice! So what car is it in and what class are you running?

That's going to be serious fun on the street.....

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/12/12 05:48 AM

The engine is going into a 67 Belvedere chassis. I plan to run in the Street Race class, big block normally aspirated category.

Isnt that the class Bill Fowler runs in?Better check the rules as you may need a straw hat to enter.

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/12/12 12:46 PM

That is a nice combo! Are you allowed a tanker trailer with fuel? Curious what lifters and valve springs you're using?

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/12/12 01:49 PM

I believe you could have made more power with a smaller port. The velocity must have been low.
Posted By: Scott58

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/12/12 02:37 PM

Yep, it was way down on power due to the ports, probably would have been 1150 instead of "only" 1054.

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/12/12 06:53 PM

Scott I really hope you make it out for the 2013 DW. I do have a question about your AWESOME HEMI build, How much cam are you runing? Do you use pushrod oiling with the Barton Rocker Arm setup? If not, how well do they live on the street. The only reason I am asking, I was going to buy a used setup from a SS racer and he said they were not recommended for long runs or street use since they had such limited oiling.
Thanks for the input and Good luck.

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/13/12 02:07 AM

Lifters are Comp 98829's. Heads are Stage V Millenniums. Cam is about 280 @ .050 at about .685 lift on intake. The spray oiling remains to be proven on the street, but I think 572Charger has used this setup quite a bit on the street with no problems. There is really quite a bit of spray up in the valve covers at pressure. I'll be watching it closely while driving the car next year during testing, if necessary we will add some oil to the top end, either via pushrods or more spray.

I apologize, I realize I misread the chart. I saw the "821 HP" and thought it was the peak HP. My mistake.

Has anyone heard any rumors on where Drag Week will actually be held next year?

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/14/12 01:09 AM

I mis-read the chart also lol, those are great numbers, that will be an amazing pump gas street motor.

With the design of the upper portion of your intake, will it need any kind of blow out window?
I just wondered as it looks similar to some of those intakes that have a tendancy to go boom during fire up, unless its different than what I'm thinking of.

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/14/12 01:41 AM

Wish I could afford a car that an engine like that would work in. Lots of details to work out on an engine like that...really cool..Very sweet build for sure. How many cubes is that thing that you are running two SV1's?

Also, I know Jim Paranis (572Charger) personally, and he does drive his 605 on the street....

why do you think you will have problems with oiling on the valve train? I thought that Barton Rocker setup should be problem free???

You got a "mild" cam and dnt think you will be pushing the RPMs too hard...so why do you think it would be a problem???

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/14/12 05:17 AM

Seems like the captions on the curve were confusing so I edited them and put the peak numbers on the graph.

As to the oiling, I don't really expect problems, but there is a lot of street driving during Drag Week, including idling and low RPM operation in traffic, etc. It will find any weaknesses! My plan is to do a fair amount of similar driving and check the valvetrain to make sure there are no dry spots getting hot under the valve covers.

How much static compression do you have???
Posted By: Joe Dokes

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/14/12 09:57 PM

That engine is truly awe inspiring, those ports look like they could swallow a small child!

Can't wait to see it run.

Joe Dokes

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 11/14/12 11:11 PM

Static CR is 11.7:1. The ports were that size when I bought the heads, they were enlarged some time in the past. Ideally, they could be smaller and that would probably bring the torque up some down low, but as it stands at 900+ ft-lbs in a NA narrow tire class it should do fine. On top I think the engine is making everything it can with that cam, the oversize ports don't seem to be hurting it. I'm curious to see how it drives on the street.

Im still in, I had what ended up being some valve seals that werent working well. I changed them and my smoke show is gone and I have finally gotten to drive it. Still needs a few little things like the tach quit working, radiator leaks now, etc. I hope to actually get some miles on it this weekend.

For drag week last year it was together for almost a whole year....this time it will only be a month or so.

Are you in? I look forward to seeing that car.

Considering the average car population drag week is pretty mopar heavy. Just from the top of my head I can think of 8 mopars going and I know I am missing several. Thats a good mopar to brand X ratio lol.

Still in, leaving three weeks early driving to Michigan to see my Mom and sister then onto Bowling Green.
I need to do some testing before DW[both of the tracks here are closed] so the plan is to stop at Tulsa for there Saturday night drags on Aug 17 to test and then more testing at Mid Michigan drag strip[the last time I ran a car there it was called central Michigan]
Its a good thing I do not mind driving.

Mom lives 250 miles north of Detroit[little town called Alpena my home town] so I will have to drive 220 miles one way to test at Mid Michigan.

Hope everything goes well with your car mike.

You've got to love Hemi builds
My Hemi's very similar to yours 12.0comp, 604cu, Stage 5 millenniums, twin 1250 pro-system carbs on a Hogan manifold.
Was interesting comparing your dyno to mine cos the engines are real close
896torque at 6100 and 1145hp at 7300

Sure will be a hand full on the street AWESOME!!!

I'll be there, got the new brewer 4 speed in, waited as long as i could on the passon box (number 13 on the list) Jamie will probably give me a call the first day of drag week! oh well, this year will just be a few more rpm on the drive between tracks. My first dragweek and can't wait!

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 09/06/13 02:51 PM

Unfortunately I haven't done any full passes in it yet the previous owner went 8.2 at 170mph. But he did have oiling issues with the spray bars and had to pull the engine down with less than 20 passes on it.

Rick Walters Racing freshened the whole thing and changed to push rod oiling. I bought the car TK with only dyno time on the engine.

I've only taken the car out once to orientate myself with the car and to check the jetting and tune. Very happy with it runs strong.

I haven't weighed it yet but at a guess 2900's with driver.

Nice, I wish I could get down to 2900 lbs. not sure I could find a way to take another 300 lbs out of my car without killing it.

Good luck with the car.

572 hemi what type of vac carbs you running and how come?
I Watched your youtube flicks, well maybe more than once certainly gets off in a hurry.
What sort of power did yours make if that's not too personal?
Should probably start up a thread on millennium head combos? Evan hemi combos?

Re: Drag Week 2013 Hemi on Dyno - 09/07/13 02:02 AM

mine made 1080 hp. The vac carbs were for nss classes. They are BIGS carbs.

Those video's are around 1.32-1.34 60ft because I pull out so much timing with the small tire. Plus thats how I slow the car for the 8.50 index.

Well, I obviously did not get the car done this year for Drag Week (my last name is NOT Gebhart), so I suppose I need to change the title to "Drag Week 2014 Hemi - Sitting in the Garage". We ended up taking the old beater Road Runner again in daily driver and did OK. We had a great time and I was especially impressed that no less than 5 (running) Gebhart family cars showed up for registration! Congratulations to them an all that made the show! Now, back to the shop and work on the hemi car....next year will be here before you know it!
