First time I went to US 30 I saw Tommy Dargewich' 68 Roadrunner named "Paranoid". That is the car that started my love affair with both drag racing and Mopars.

I think a buddy of CRT's still owns that car too.

Re: Race cars with great names - 11/16/08 06:09 PM

For my cup of Tea I think all drag cars should have a name!! I name all my cars cause that is the era I grew up in. It made the heroes of the sport more identifiable. You grew up knowing the car, the driver, and the crew.
That's the way it was before free agency in the pro sports world as well.

Re: Race cars with great names - 11/16/08 07:32 PM

"Ramcharger Candymatic" Reminds me of a story a friend of mine tells. He was a young guy in Pennsylvania and at his local track the top dog was a 409 Chevy and it belonged to Dave Strickler. One week end in 1962 a Dodge from out of town showed up at the track. My friend Leroy said it was the ugliest thing they had ever seen and to make matters worse the darned thing had an automatic in it. Everyone knew race cars had sticks. Anyway at the end of the day it end up the ugly dodge against Stricklers chevy for top eliminator. The Dodge cleaned the chevys clock. Strickler in disbelief challenged the Dodge to a rematch and the results were the same.I asked him if he remembered the Dodge guys name or the name of the car and all he could remember was the Dodge said "Mean with 413" on it. He said no one there could believe the Dodge beat the local Hero.

    Been trying to come up with something for my car

    This is a thought .. DEAD MONEY

    The term "dead money" is also used in a derogatory sense to refer to money put in the pot by players who are still legally eligible to win it, but who are unlikely to do so because they are unskilled. This can also be applied to the player himself: Let's invite John every week; he's dead money. The term "dead money" also applies in tournaments, when a player enters who has virtually no chance of winning.

    Some Florida race cars over the years:

    * Insufficient Funds
    * Black Magic
    * Cruz Control (owners was Billy Cruz)
    * Hog's Breath (was in the Steve Martin movie Parenthood with the Mopar Missile that was in the Garlits museum. I was an extra with my bracket Challenger.
    * Pink Panther (Plymouth Duster)
    * Super Wagon (early B-body big block wagon)
    * Under The Gun
    * Excalibur

    Others:
    * Loose Caboose
    * Mountain Hemi
    * California Flash
    * Godzilla
    * Demonstrator (actually on a Dart Sport)
    * Cisco Kid
    * M&M Express
    * Red Light Bandit

    .....so many more. I just can't think of them all.

    There are a few cars that still use names.

    Main Entry: lo·co·mo·tion
    Pronunciation: \ˌlō-kə-ˈmō-shən\
    Function: noun
    Etymology: Latin locus + English motion
    Date: 1646
    1 : an act or the power of moving from place to place

    Little Eva and Grand Funk Railroad were also an influence in the name choice.

    I didn't know it until quite a few years ago, but SS/A Hemi racer Bob Reed had that name on one of his cars in the early-mid '60's!

    Re: Race cars with great names - 11/17/08 02:11 AM

    Here is my scoop.
    First my handle is of course what you see above, FULLMETALJACKET," not because I'm an ex-marine or love guns, but because my car is entirely metal. No fiberglass or carbon fiber composites.
    The name doesn't apply to my car but just me as my handle on this board.

    Now, the names of cars that I've seen on the street or the track that stick to mind are:

    *Emotional Rescue

    *Satisfaction

    *Quarter Pounder, nightmare on any street.

    *The Silver Bullet (Detroit's own)

    *Mr. Hyde

    and of course my very own current "Nemesis"

    I gotta go with The Mopar Missile. Always liked Color Me Gone, California Flash, Swamp Rat, Jade Grenade, and Red Light Bandit, too. Locomotion is cool, too.
    My '57 Chevy back in the day was "Frustration", and probably the silliest name on this thread so far is what I call my Duster, due to a buddy making fun of it being 'only a squeak-motor (small-block) car': "Squeaky". I think I've posted enough pics of it by now that everyone here has seen it. The current motor is Frankensqueak.
    The "Itchin' to Win" Vagisil car was hysterical!

    As long as we are on this Nostalgic trip, did anyone ever have the pleasure of watching the Anglia's race in the old Texas Anglia Circuit? It was crazy stuff with some of the early cars running big blocks tunnel rams and 4speeds in a car that was about as tall as it was long. Many a 3/8 mile passes down a 1/4 mile strip.

    Gruesome Rat (A black 67 Chevelle)

    Rat Patrol (A purple Hemi powered 55 Chevy Wagon)

    I was always a fan of Butch leals California Flash name.
    The first race I ever went to as a kid, was a match race in 1964. Red 64 Ford Falcon with a Ford Cammer named Daddy Warbucks and a light Blue 64 Chevelle named SuperShaker.
    I remember a green 68 Hemi GTX that ran IHRA SS named HEMI-X. My neighbor had a Super Stock Z-28 named COLD SWEAT. I remember a modified car that was a bright yellow Demon named Screamin Yella-Demon with the appropriate graphics.
    Cars in the 60's had such great names. Back then it really meant something to have a car with a really good/cool name. Now it seems like everyone wants their name or a sponsors name and nothing else on the side of their cars.

Dave Rietz will be building the Hemi this spring and they hope to make some passes on 70% this year. I think Tom is 80 and can't wait to get back int he car!!

    Tom Rules
    In 73 or 74 at the IHRA Spring Nationals at Bristol, Tom had a futuristic Challegner body on his FLying Dutchman Funny Car. The rules only said it had to be a production car but the rules did not say when the car had to be in production. since his was a Dodge show car anbd Dodge said it would be going into production, he got to run it. Wonder what happened to that body? Man do I wish I had kept those old pictures from the 60's and 70's.

    Probably the same car. Back in the day it would run at Union Hill Drag Strip outside on Nashille Tn. If I remember correctly it was a 62 Plymouth,maybe light blue in color. It didn't run there all time,but when they would have Super Stock meets.

    Being in New Mexico...

    If my truck was worthy of it I'd call it:

    "El Jefe"...The Boss.

    "El Patron"...Employer or manager, also some Bad A$$ Tequila.

    "La Migra"...The Imigration.

    OK, maybe not the last one.
