I'm building a 470 with Indy closed chamber heads, I bought ICON 1.480 step dish pistons (I thought they were just dished). Do I have to remove the 0.005 step in front of the piston to install them if they clear? The step will put them at deck height if that matters. Yes, I know I have to "dry" fit the pistons to check clearances and how much clearance do I need?

Put a .039 head gasket on it, should be good, but check it.

Dont know if I am just misunderstanding you but I always install my 4 corner pistons without the rings and do a deck height check on each piston. Once you know your true deck height you can work from that if your heads are closed chamber. I mean perfect is zero deck and then just use the .039 head gasket as long as the flat (highest part of the piston) is zero deck not the dish. Or did I read it wrong ?

Yes you are correct... The quelch pad should be 0.001-2 below deck but I wont know till I dry fit every thing.

Make sure and rock the piston from the cam side to the outside( I use a thin narrow straight blade screwdrivers between the cylinder wall and the piston stop to raock and hold the piston as I measure, you can push it over also but not sure taht it stays there like it does when being held by the screwdriver blade) amd measure the piston quench pad hieght at both levels I've seen as much as .020 difference that way EDITED Make sure and check the deck hieght on all eight pistons, on all the motors you do It gets real aggrivating when you used one piston and rod to set the deck hieght with and then find out later after you checked all eight deck hieghts that you have rods that vary .013 in length

I know that no matter how many times I do the math I am not satisfied until I put all 4 corner pistons in and check them all to be even so I know my deck is also straight and flat on the block and my line bore and crank are good. And as CAB said and you probably already know about rocking the piston and getting it as close to the right position as I have seen mine change even a few thousands when I think I have the piston stable and I still push lightly on it. I dont get to worried if my final deck readings on my own eng may run between say zero to + or - .002. I mean thats .004 but at least I know with a .039 gasket my quench is between .037 to .041. I do like to favor the high side on mine and have from zero to maybe .003 below the deck then above the deck as I would rather run .042 quench then .036. I just like mine between .040 to about .045. I have even run as high as .049 and been fine. Good luck. Ron
